8 yr old hoarse voice/mouth breathing/allergies/adenoid enlargement

My 8 yr old boy is struggling with his voice. He is a mouth breather, with allergies (probably caused alot by the mouth breathing) We have been able to "control" his allergies naturally and through chiropractic care, but are very worried about the voice. His school is concerned by his nasal/hoarse sounding voice. Often times in the mornings he is coughing like he has had drainage when he gets up. It sounds like he is pushing his voice. They are recommending an ENT and assuming his adenoids are enlarged (though we don't know that for certain) He is very outgoing, tall and very slender. He is very bright for his age. What would be a recommendation for his situation?

Thank you so much for you willingness to look at this case. I (mom) will answer to the best I can.
1. Age,sex, weight, body and face appearance, country.
ANS. 8yr old, male, 69 lbs, very tall for his age, head is round, big eyes with long eyelashes, round face, fair skinned (but tans very very easily), Unites States

2. Main complaints and other associated troubles.
a)Where is the trouble; The exact locality of the complaint like hands, legs etc; duration of trouble.
ANS. The I am not sure if the trouble stems from his allergies or from the mouth breathing (becuase breathing IN the allergens could cause the allergies vs filtering them through your nose) I supposed I would say the sinus/throat area is causing his voice to sound so as if he is PUSHING the voice out.

b)What exactly do child feels, Sensation as pain, how pain feels or burn etc, according to you.
ANS. As we ask him about if it hurts to speak, or if it is hard to speak...he says no. But he is a child to rarely complain of any aliments. The only information he will offer is that sometimes his throat feels dry. I don't believe that any of it is hurting him, but that the allergies can make it sometimes difficult to breath through his nose, feeling like his nose is blocked.

c)What are the factors that causes this trouble according to you.
ANS. His voices sounds worse after doing alot of singing, or if he has been doing alot of shouting (being at a game day or something where he is doing exciting/loud cheering) We most certainly notice his voice to be worse when he has gotten run down, such as, spending the night with a friend and being up too late, eating junk food. In the spring and fall when allergies would be common, he may have a flare up with his allergies but that doesn't directly correlate to his voice being worse.

d)Condition under which the complaint is reduced or child feels better like, cold or hot application, cold or hot weather, position as standing, walking, rest etc.
ANS. He doesn't prefer many hot drinks and doesn't like ice with his water. He likes room temp for drinks. He likes to sleep cuddling up in blankets, particularly blankets by his face and head. Position..he rarely sits unless he is in school. He NEVER sits down under his own free will. He like to move constantly and will even watch TV standing dribbling a ball or throwing a football around. MOVEMENT is key at all times to this child. (however, he doesn't disobey in school and remains seated)

e)Condition under which the complaint is increased like, cold or hot application, cold or hot weather, position as standing, walking, rest etc.
ANS.
He doesn't the extremes, he doesn't want to be outside if it is too hot or too cold (much like his father) If it were application (like heat pack vs ice pack) He would pick heat pack over ice pack. He will cough more in the mornings since he has been lying down. He would complain much more if he were sitting.

f)Any other complaint any where in the body.
ANS. He has no other complaints at this time, but as mentioned above...this child RARELY complains of any physical symptoms EVER. Even if it is a very hard fall outside or skinned up knee, he MAY cry a little but hates to complain about it.

g)Onset time of troubles in detail, i.e which came first, after that what problem and so on.
ANS. At about 3.5 yrs old during the later half of summer he would start coughing, particularly in the evenings around 5 pm and then continue to cough all evening, through the the night and settle down closer to early morning. The problem would leave in the fall. Much to my regret, we were given several homeopathic remedies at the time (I know MED was one) but I don't remember the names of what we tried, however none help with the allergies and coughing. This lasted two summers. We then heard of a chiropractor who did acupuncture without needles. She also does lymphatic "cleansing" Through her acupuncture, she was able to settle down my son's allergies about 90%. He was an entirely different child. We have gone to see her several times each year and have always seen his allergies settle. Often times she uses laser therapy on the allergy points and he walks away coughing much less. We didn't notice his voice changing until the last year. About a year ago his teacher mentioned that his voice sounds like he is pushing to read and sometimes even just speaking. Again a different teacher this year is noticing the same thing. This is the first treatment we are seeking with his voice.

h)Treatment method adopted and its result.
ANS. Hopefully the above has answered that.

3. History of diseases in family.
ANS.
When he was little he had eczema. A homeopath gave him syphilinum and it appeared to help the eczema go away, but has been tried with allergies and it didn't help. Mom got gestational diabetes while pregnant with him, but controlled it with diet and exercise. Diabetes never went away. Dad has no known diseases. Maternal
grandpa has Parkinsons and dimension. Paternal grandpa has kidney stone problems.

4. Personal History.
a)About childhood. Well, we are still in his childhood, now, as he is only 8.
He has always been very outgoing, fun loving, likes to the center of attention. He has 3 sisters. He is the oldest of the 4 (all born within 5 years) He was not sick often. Can be very selfish and not an overly grateful personality. Life of the party type of kid.

b)Academic performance.
ANS. School is very easy for him, he is an auditory learner. They have advanced him up one grade for math. He doesn't care for english/reading subjects but receives good grades. He tends to miss questions only because he is in such a hurry to finish.

c)Any major incidents in life and the effect of it on life.
ANS. TO MY KNOWLEDGE, nothing has happened that has affected him in this way. We have moved houses, but never moved away from friends. Mom and dad have a strong marriage. We do alot together as a family. He has lost nobody very close to him.

d)How is child satisfied with friends, family members, etc.
ANS. He gets along well with his sisters, but like to be in charge. He is close with mom and dad, but adores everything dad does. Dad puts alot of time into doing activities with him. At school, he gets along well with friends, BUT with his closest group of friends they often leave him out and he hurts from this. He reaction is angry and then doesn't like the friend leaving him out. He more much more likely to respond by being mad than by appearing HURT. We have to help talk through this with him, explain our anger often come from our hurt, but it isn't his initial reaction AT ALL! He can be cocky, which could easily affect how he gets left out.

6. How is child's Appetite and Thirst.
ANS. He wants to eat alot and often. He doesn't ask to drink alot but we encourage that as much a possible. He would prefer to not drink that much, but to eat ALOT. Yet, he remains very very slender.

7. Likes and Dislikes.
a)Alcohol Bread Butter Bitter Salt Sweet Sour Fats Milk Mud Chalk Egg Spicy food Meat Fish Fruits Fried Food
Warm food-drink Cold food-drink Ice Ice cream Chocolates Tea Coffee.
ANS.
Alchol-not of age
Bread-likes this ALOT, we try ot keep somewhat limited
Butter-yes
Bitter-no
Salt-yes
Sweet-YES
Sour-no
Milk-no
Mud-No
Chalk-no
Eggs-Not a favorite, but we eat quite a few
Meat- yes
fish- if fried
Fruits-Yes
Fried Food=Yes
Drinks warm- Only if hot chocolate
Food warm-yes
food cold-yes
Ice in drink-No
Chocolates-Yes
Tea- yes
Coffee-no

b)Anything else about like and dislike of any activity with child or surrounding.
ANS. He just loves sports! He loves movement and rarely sits down. He does well in school, but doesn't care for it.

8. Bowel movements.
a)Nature of stool, frequency, satisfactory or not.
ANS. Honestly, due to his age, I don't see the movements anymore. I believe it remains normal. He didn't have trouble with this as a child and doesn't seem to be constipated now. He usually has a movement every other day.

b)Any discomforts associated with stool.
ANS. Not that I am aware of.

9. Urine.
a)Frequency, nature, volume.
ANS. He appears to wait until he has quite a bit to go. His personality is that he is almost too busy to go, until he has quite a bit. Doesn't seem overly yellow or a particular odor.

b)Any discomfort before, during or after urination/odour
ANS. Not that we know of, it would be odd if he would complain of it, if he did have discomfort though.

12. Sleep.
a)The quality of sleep, the quietness or restlessness of sleep,
position of sleep, times of waking and reasons for waking,
need for cover over various parts of the body,
whether the window must be open or closed etc.
common dreams, peculiar sounds or gestures during sleep, etc.
ANS.
He sleeps on his back most of the night, sometimes on his sides, but not one side particularly. He sleeps with his mouth open often and his tounge down vs on the roof of his mouth. He will wake every other night or so and come to our room and ask for someone to come lay with him because he is scared. He like blankets on him, especially by his face and head. No windows open, but we have always slept with a fan on for background noise. Snores a little, but not alot.

13. Sweat
a)How much, what parts, staining, Odour.
ANS. He HEAD will be the first to sweat, always. His face will be red. No particular odour.

14. Weather
a)Tolerance to heat and cold, dryness, humidity, weather changes, sun,
foggy weather, wind drafts, closed rooms, etc.
ANS. He doesn't like the super cold or super hot, but other than the extremes he doesn't mind the sun, the humidity, closed rooms or fog. I wish somethings stood out, but no particulars.

15. Mental Status
a) Were there any complications at birth?
ANS. Yes, he was an emergency c section with the cord around his neck. Blue hands. Stuck in the birth canal with a very cone shaped head to START with, quickly returned to very round.
b)At what age did the child: crawl, walk, talk, teethe, toilet train ? He was early for all. Walking about 11 months, talking ALOT at a year, had most of his teeth by 1 year. Toliet trained by 18 months and easily. He was toliet trained within 2 days and no overnight accidents.

ANS.
c)How did the child react to the following situations: vaccinations, birth of younger sibling, starting day care, starting school, spending night with a friend, going away to camp, traveling with the family
ANS. He had no vaccinations at all. When his first sister was born, he was 18 months. She was life flighted out with a collapse lung. When he came to see her, he wouldn't speak to mom for 3 or 4 days. After than he never showed aggravation signs. Loved holding all the baby sisters, and didn't want to share them with others. Was always excited to see them.
Each year starting school is disappointing and makes him mad, as he would rather stay home for summer. Loves to spend the night with friends and enjoys family trips ALOT.

d)Did the child have an especially severe childhood illness--measles, mumps, croup, etc.?
ANS. When he was 18 months old he had an ear infection. He spike a fever of 104.7 and had a febrile seizure. Other than

e)When ill or upset does the child want to cling or be left alone, or something else altogether?
ANS. He would like mom to sit with him.

f)How would you describe the child's behavior when playing with other children?
ANS. He likes to do things his way and get his way. He can be bossy and selffish. But he really enjoys to play with kids vs being along.

g)What feedback do you get from the child's teachers?
ANS. Every teacher has always commented what a great student he is and how well he excels in school. They never complain of his behavior AT ALL.

h)How does your child treat animals?
ANS. He loves info on animals, factual. He likes to learn about them. He like to hunt and fish. When he encounters a pet, he is stand offish at first, and then grows to love it.

i)What fears does your child have?
ANS. He doesn't like to be alone and does not like the dark (even in the day, such as a dark basement) He doesn't like to sleep alone.

j)How affectionate is the child when not sick?
ANS. Not overly affectionate, but just wants someone near by. Doesn't want to be alone.

k)How sympathetic is the child (concerned with the suffering of others)?
ANS. If it is his sisters, he will feel badly for them. He doesn't like his mom or dad to have any hurts, but other than that...not a sympathetic person.

l)How is the child affected by games, studying, music and dancing?
ANS. Easily addicted to video games and we monitor the amount of time closely. He can't have distractions while studying. Love music and loves to dance. Fast music.

m)Is the child fastidious? Please explain.
ANS. I don't understand the question...I am sorry.

n)Is the child sensitive
to criticism? Please explain.
ANS. Yes, he doesn't like to feel corrected or wrong. He takes in very internally and holds onto it for a long time. We must be careful of letting him feel shame, because he will hold onto that. We are very careful to explain taking a wrong action doesn't make you a BAD person, otherwise he will take to heart that he isn't liked because he did something wrong and was corrected. Very affected by criticism.
o)Describe the child's eating habits, for example: picks at his food, or eats voraciously, or is full after 2 bites, or can't sit still to eat, or must be fed or he won't calm down, and so on.
ANS. He eats SOOO fast. ALways the first to finish his food, even if it isn't a favorite.

p)Are there any digestive complaints--waking with stomach pains, or a lot of gas and bloating or burping, or constipation, etc.?
ANS. None that we are aware of.

q)How cooperative is the child?
ANS. He only complains about turning off video games. He is usually willing to do what is asked, but must be asked more than one time. He will do the minimum to get his job/chore done, won't exceed what he is asked to do.

r)What does the child really love to do?
He LOVES sports, all sports....On TV or to play. He really likes to fish. But mostly just wants to play sports all the time and he excels at most every one.

Thank you so much.

Yesterday our son had 3 (each at separate times) Rhus Tox. Today he has had 2 of the doses, with one left for the day. He seems much more emotional and lacking self confidence. Would this seem normal?
