Compulsive hair twirling

Does anyone know the remedies indicated for compulsive hair twirling? As in the nervous habit of twirling hair around a finger to make it twist up tight? Not to pull it out, but just to twirl it and twist if?

I'm just curious as I have seen a couple people in my family who do it. I'm not going to prescribe but I am curious about the habit and I cant find it in my books.

Thanks
Ruth

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Gestures, makes, plays with hair - ther

Gestures, hands, involuntary motions of the (100+ remedies)

Gestures, repeating the same actions - chen-a, lach, plat, Syph, tub, VERAT, Zinc (and all the zinc salts)

I wouldn't consider it a symptom for most people, as it does not cause suffering, does not limit their life in any way. It would have to be extreme, compulsive, irritating to the person, exaggerated in some way, for me to consider it important for prescribing purposes. Lots of things in a person's character have no bearing on a homoeopathic prescription - we are allowed to have quirks and not be considered unhealthy.

I see your point of view but I dont see it as benign as you do. I see it more similar to trichotillomania. It has a lot in common. The twirling is twisting hair to painful tightness so there is pain on the finger as well as on the hair and scalp. Then the result of the tight twisting is breaking of the hair. And hair loss. And the whole compulsive, nervous thing.

So. Not just a quirk.

In my opinion.

You are describing what I mentioned would be considered a symptom in homoeopathy - something that is extreme, compulsive, irritating, exaggerated, causing suffering of some kind. Someone who plays with their hair isn't typically showing that kind of behaviour, but if they are you might want to include it in the overall picture of their ill health.

What I would be doing if I were interviewing such a patient, would be exploring what is going on for them while they twist the hair - describe what you are feeling right now, what are you thinking etc.
