High Lipid Profile

Assalam-o-Alaikum,

Dear Dr. Sahib,
Hoped my this message finds you in good health and spirit.
My name is M. Yaquob. My son, 14 years old has the following values of his Lipid Profile Test:

Cholesterol 136mg/dL
HDL Cholesterol - 26 mg/dL
LDL Cholestrol - 81 mg/dL
Triglycerides - 226 mg/dL

It should be noted that the test was conducted after 12 hours fasting.

Thanking you

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Why did you get his lipids checked.

Cut back on the sugar intake of your son to control his triglycerides and encourage him to do physical activity for improving HDL & LDL, otherwise his cholesterol is fine.

High triglycerides indicate that he has a tendency towards diabetes.

Are you diabetic or your wife?

Most of my children have the same problem. My second last child (male) has cholesterol level at 500 mg/dL and Triglycerides at 1000 mg/dL. He is now about 06 years old and he has this problem by birth. Due to this reason I do the lipid profile test of my children after some time.

We don't have any diabetes problem but the parents of my wife are diabetes patients.

How was this problem discovered why did you go for lipid testing in the first place

My second last son, who is now about 06 years old, had got pneumonia at the age of 07 months. He was admitted in a hospital for treatment of the case.

During his routine tests in the hospital it was found that his cholesterol level is high. By conducting several test it was concluded that he has hyperchylomicronemia.

What about the lipid profile of your whole family, you, your wife & other kids, your & your wife's parents.

Its highly unusual for kids this young to have lipids problem.

Patients with familial hyperchylomicronemia are treated by dietary restriction: no more than 15 percent of their total calories should be taken in as fat. Both saturated and unsaturated fat should be reduced. Supplementation with medium-chain triglyceride oil can be provided if patients need more fat calories.

We, the married couple, don't have any known history of hypertriglycedremia. At the time when my young child was found having this problem, the doctors advised us to test our cholesterol and triglycerides levels. Fortunately, the test reports were normal.

Some members of my wife' s family (brothers & sisters) have known history of high cholesterol level found lately. It is to mention that our families are linked with relations from both sides.

So its genetic.

Has the fasting sugar & HbA1C of your son ever been tested.

What does he eat on a regular day, give full exhaustive detail.

It might be genetic.

We have never tested the sugar and HbA1C of any member of our family.

My son eats what we eat. There is no restriction on him. But he is found of meat and chicken as well as tea.
