5 year old with persistent chesty barking cough-lungs are clear

Hi there,

My 5 year old has a persistent chesty barking cough. It comes on suddenly and is not related to cold or heat, drafts or warmth. It occurs at any time of the day randomly and does not wake him up from sleep, he sleeps soundly with an open mouth. Prefers sleeping in a colder room with minimal clothing and minimal bedding.

His personality is good natured, friendly, sociable but nervous around new situations initially. Loves to be hugged and sit in peoples laps but not clingy. Enjoys loads of individual creative play and time alone reading books.

I have tried Antimonium Tart. 30X Tablets for 3 days at the recommended childrens dosage. Small improvement but not much. It seems to improve when he leans back on a warm heated rice pillow.

Would belladonna or pulsatilla be a good thing to try next?

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
How long has be been suffering from cough?

What does he do during the complaint? Describe his emotional and mental status during the complaint and without the complaint.

What about his thirst and appetite during the complaint?

Kindly answer these questions..

Thank you very much for your reply. During the coughing attack he draws his arms in and coughs so hard he feels as if he needs to vomit. He often will run to the loo to attempt to vomit but nothing ever comes out. Not even when this coughing fit occurs during mealtime. He is unhappy and scared during the fit. When not coughing he acts as if he is a well child and will run and play within the house and outside the house as if nothing is wrong for 30 minutes to an hour or longer with no coughing fits. Sometimes he will have no coughing fits for several hours, sometimes they are very close together.

The sounds is scary, it sounds like a wet barking cough to me but the pediatrician stated his lungs are clear when he went 3 weeks ago and his strep throat culture came back negative. They tried putting him on a liquid antihistamine but it made him drowsy and did not seem to improve any of his symptoms. Plus I do not like those kinds of medicines if not needed.

There have not been any major or minor changes in our normal day to day routine and he does not have any allergies to foods.

All of this started when he came home from summer camp one day with a mild low grade 101.5 F which was treated with clear broth and rest and resolved itself within 24 hours. Since then he has had this re-occurring cough that will not depart.

His appetite and thirst are normal with no deviations after the fever period ended 3 weeks ago. He has not had any unusual food cravings or periods of extreme thirst. He has not shown any signs of usual behaviour.

Did he shared with you about any event that happened with his friends or other people at summer camp?
The event can be a fight, or any emotional disturbances.

How does he feel better when he gets the episodes of cough? What you need to do to make him feel better?

I will need to think on this and speak to him. I will reply again tomorrow with more information. I did not think that there might have been a trigger event. It is possible. I will find out. Many thanks and speak tomorrow.

He feels fine after the periods of cough, but he felt fine before them as well. I do not need to do anything to make him feel better afterwards, he reverts to normal behavior as if nothing untoward has occurred. I will pay closer attention when I get home from work as to if there are any stressors occurring directly before the cough as well.

Ok.. You can ask him but don't make him very uncomfortable by repetitively asking him..

Till now Belladonna comes as a close match.
Let me know after talking to him..Then I will prescribe a remedy..
