metal irritates skin
My 12 yr old has been bothered by metal snaps, zippers, belt buckles, and jewelry since birth. She develops a rash that looks somewhat like poison ivy, wherever metals touch her skin. She gets tired of not wearing necklaces and always having to wear an undershirt tucked in to wear a belt with a buckle. She can wear some jewelry that is 14kt. gold, but is limited to how long she can keep them on. I know others with this problem. Anyone know what causes this and if there is anything to take to help with it. Thanks.tbarbie on 2006-02-04
This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Sound like it could allergic contact dermatitis (eczema) from nickel.
I can only suggest you not let her wear anything with nickel. sorry, but are plastic belt buckles cool enough? Even 14K jewelry has nickel in it. The gold plating is probably why she wear can it longer.
Do a google search for nickel free jewelry and belt buckles. There are many sites to look through. Maybe you can order a belt or a necklace and see if she has a reaction to the nickel-free.
I don't know about a remedy for her allergy, but she can at least still be in fashion, right? That's pretty much a number one priority when your 12.
Hopefully someone else can respond about possible remedies. I myself am pretty sensitive to ear jewelry, although my wedding band never gives me a problem.
Hope this helps.

One more thing: Most of the stuff you say she breaks out from is probably the nickel, but I just found a few interesting facts about gold...
24 karat is 24/24's gold or 100% gold.
18 karat is 18/24's gold or 75% gold (25% of the other metals are non-gold)
14 karat is 14/24's gold or 58.33% gold. (41.67% of the other metals are non-gold)
18k and 14k Yellow Gold is Gold alloyed with copper, silver, zinc
14k and 18k White Gold is Gold alloyed with copper, nickel, zinc.
So, my question is - is the ring white gold or yellow gold. This may also help you find out if it's the nickel.
