Dr. Kadwa: help with teenagers chronic cough
Hello dr. My 14 year old son coughs every winter. Year round he has mucous in his throat, and the colder months he has a cough.His cough is loud, as if from deep down. He blows his nose, especially on rising. Discharge is usually clear. His cough is usually sounds dry but occasionally has expectoration.
Last week he was feeling poorly and had a low fever. His cough became worse and had throat pain. Several days later, his cough is still strong and he complains of chest pain. Expectoration is yellow. He feels that there is mucus and rattling in his chest, in the upper stomach area.
He has outbursts of coughing, coughs many times in a row.
We've tried phosphorus in the past but honestly I don't think it has helped him a lot. His cough is stubborn and persistent.
I sometimes suspect it could be allergic because it's on a daily basis.
I would appreciate any advice on dealing with the acute problem at the moment and if resolved to continue to find a solution for his chronic situation.

Please give him antimonium tart 30 and rhus tox 30 twice a day for 5 days. The remedies may be given at a time.

Shyam11, initially I will follow Dr Kadwas advice, but if you believe you can help and are willing to give advice even though I won't be following it to begin with, please feel free to do so. A second opinion is always welcome!

Dr. Kadwa, it's been 4 days since he's started taking the remedies. His cough still persists and is deep sounding. Like barking. When he coughs his chest hurts and still has expectoration.

My intentions are to stick with Dr Kadwa. He has helped me immensely in the past! I was simply updating so as to inform him of the situation so he can evaluate accordingly.

Another update: His expectoration seems to have cleared up quite a lot. Cough still is hoarse and deep sounding, but less often and shorter bursts.

If there is good amount of relief the remedies may be discontinued. Please use the remedies again on need. Belladonna 30 may also help. If the condition is severe it may be added to the earlier two remedies, it may deal with minor conditions on it's own.

Thank you. If this stubborn cough persists, without any other problems ( nasal discharge, sore throat etc) should something else be given or should I repeat the remedies?

Dr Kadwa, out of curiosity mainly, isn't Belladonna prescribed for more acute symptoms with a sudden onset? I was reading up on it and his symptoms do match, but I was wondering if it is as affective because he has had them for a while.

Hello again Dr. His condition has remained as is. Acute symptoms had disappeared but cough persists, maybe not as deep but still loud and strong. He says it feels as though it comes from his stomach and not from his upper chest. He gets easily out of breath. A dr saw him and said his chest is clear. To me it sounds as though the mucous has loosened up. Expectoration and discharge have been yellow and quite thick.
It' has started to wear him out. When someone hears him they always comment on his cough and compare it to a smokers cough.
We are changing his diet- cutting out sugar and dairy to see if it helps.
