Residual smell from an oil spill

Hello

Could anyone tell me if residual smell from an oil spill is ok for a 4 year old?

This is in my son's school. My son goes from 9-12 (3hours)

Thanks

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
If your eyes sting or burn, you probably also are inhaling the fumes. The symptoms range from headache and dizziness to unconsciousness and suffocation.

If your child is inhaling fumes (which probably so, if smelled) I would say it is NOT okay for a 4 year old for any length of time.

Hi WNCgirl,

Thanks for the reply. This spill happened 4 weeks back in his school. When I smelled it on the first day i took him back home and never sent him until this week. Day before yesterday he went for the first time after the spill.

When I went to drop him, I still smelled some oil but the teachers said it was just a deodarant smell.

When I went to pick him up, I smelled it even more. So i did not send him to school again.

He seemed ok after the school. All other children have been going right from the first day of the spill. They seem ok though couple of them got cough. But the parents do not think it was from the oil spill.

Now I do not know what to do. I know I cannot get my money back since no one else is smelling it (except for one more mother).

It smells like I entered a gas station (petrol bunk).

Do you think it is better keep him home until I donot smell any more?

Thanks

I can only give my opinion of course. If it were mine, I would not send to school. I personally would wait. The fumes are toxic. No one else probably smells it as much, because they are practically living in it. I worked in a place once with a leak and got severe headaches before it could be fixed. I would not put any child in that situation if it can be prevented.

Google dangers of oil fumes or similar and see what you find.

Thanks. I will. I am seriously thinking of withdrawing him from school if I smell anything Monday again.
