This has been going on for approx 6 months now,
He had a sleep over at a friends house a couple of weekends ago and the children basically did as they liked, didnt go to bed till early hours, since then it seems to have been at its worst over the past 2 weeks we have had at least 5 nights in this way. He says he wants to be asleep before we go to bed, maybe he is a little afraid of being awake alone?

I note that many have asked questions but none has offered a solution by prescribing a remedy.
I hope they will not mind my butting in with my default remedy for insomnia which is of course Arnica 30c in the wet dose. A teaspoonful can be given twice daily with the last dose just before bedtime.
I believe that your son will be asleep shortly after.
A radio tuned to the white noise between channels can also help with the 'shush' sound which is soothing and promotes sleep.
