The ABC Homeopathy Forum

depression

diagnosis OCD, anxiety disorders, maybe bipolar. Strange problems for several years with phobias over germs. Gave up conventional medicine after failure of 13 different drugs over a 2 yr period. (many of which caused severe reaction) Bach Flower cured phobic aspects- specifically Mimulus, Gentian, Gorse, Clematis. Everything great for about a year. Relapse a year later. Impossible to describe, when you're tormented and feel as if everyone is against you and you can only fail. When you can't sleep at night being tormented by how you lose a competition by fractions of a second or grade by frations of a point.
The All that can go wrong will go wrong attitude never stops. Worse in public (always fear mocking/criticism), under pressure (always someone who can do something better, jealousy/envy). Constant fear of societal roles of looking too weak or sensitive, suppressed emotions causing pain, frequent illness. Vegetarian 4 yrs. study herbal medicine and homeopathy intensively in spare time, possibly career. I wouldn't be making a post to complete stranger if I wasn't desperate, no homeopath within 500 miles here and cannot afford. My understanding of homeopathy is limited- Aurum Metallicum at 30C for several day accomplishes little. 1M unpredictable worked for about a week, worsened next dose, next dose after 5 days. I am aware that an overly high potency of the incorrect remedy can cause a 'proving' of the remedy. Advice for correct remedy(ies) and potency?????????????????

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
recurring dreams of criticism and failures. Extremely sensitive to criticism, Becomes destructive. Sweets tend to worsen, as does missing meals; hypoglycemia type. Bad asthma as a child disappeared completely several years ago

Ive read this and will ask you some ? when I get a few moments. If you responded well to Bach . Homeopathy should help.

in the mean time I was just wondering how old you are. Is it work or school thats a problem ? ARe germs a problem presently? What exactly is the 'strange' problems. Do you have these presently. IS your mental health worse since asthma is gone?

Sycotic last decade
Stress of school and sports competitions could be part, seemed to worsen possibly after asthma subsided

johnrjjj2005 last decade
Tonsilectomy around age 9 relieved asthma and caused to subside shortly after. Did start to become withdrawn/less social... worst years between grades 3-8
phobic of germs/illness would cover/avoid people. Caused great mockery and school problems; as mentioned conventional med failed several years- seemed to finally solve everything with Bach Flower. Perhaps problem is Bach doesn't completely heal roots of diseas. miasms?
Obiviously this is far more complicated than my early experience with homeopathy for simple physical ailments like headache or allergy. Things that keep coming up in research-- Aurum Met., Lac Caninum, Causticum, Lycopodium- needs more specifics. Diet, exercise, supplements already.

johnrjjj2005 last decade
Could you tell me more about ocd - any rituals ? What sort of hobbies do you enjoy.

Sycotic last decade
Hi John! I've been struggling with somewhat similiar issues. So I know what u're talking about. I've had severe anxiety and chronic stress, ocd -style thinking along with depression and some form of hypo (which seems to be some kind of anxiety). I've tried a bunch of conventional meds without help. I have a sharp mind and no conventional drug can do much. Mind comes thru! I've been taking antroposophic remedies since 2002 (they use very low potencies) or so... but haven't tried classical homeopathy enough, just a couple of remedies. Now taking Lycopodium. Soon for 3 weeks.
Can't say anything about if it's doing sth. I've had a better episode in 2005 and 2006 until recently when I moved to a new apartment that caused enormous stress. But this shall pass. Hang in there, I'm sure u will find something that works.
Good luck!

Rituals, at least as drastic as before ceased after Bach. More of a constant stress over work now and constantly comparing to others. Difficult to sleep at times and get clear enough to approach hypnosis or meditation. Hobbies mainly swimming, biking, studying health sciences, philosophy... Difficult to describe- mood swings-- hormonal causes? Can be irritable, anxious, argumentative, intense like a Nux Vomica, but much of the time at school just lethargic feeling/depressed. feel extremely lonely at times and nearly invisible yet very nervous in conversation, are there remedies for social issues? Aurum Metallicum 1M brings considerable relief from darkest of the depressive aspects but still feels incomplete- lasts about 5-7 days- sometimes makes worse (proving), would it be safe and reasonable to go to an even higher potency? (10M 50M, CM?)

johnrjjj2005 last decade
Hi Johnr
Before higher doses of Aur take one dose of Carcinosin 200c. Through your words one can see more than one miasm underlying. It is important to treat the present miasm. Try this and let me know what happens. Best wishes.

If you were a vegetarian for 4 years you're almost certainly lacking in Vitamin B12 which can generally only be properly absorbed from meat. All the symptoms you mention can be caused by a B12 deficiency. However, just eating meat, now that you're (almost certainly) deficient, won't solve the problem.

Get yourself a course of B12 shots (6-12), and see the asotnishing difference it makes. You will immediately feel a lift and a buzz and the symptoms you mention will all quickly subside.

You can inject yourself. It's quite easy. Buy a hypodermic syringe from a drug store (they're very cheap) and inject yourself with the B12 anywhere in the fleshy part between the top of the outside of your leg and your waist. That way you will harldy feel a thing.

Hypoglycemia is common in vegetarians since it's characterized by low protein levels. Again, hypoglycemia can cause all of the symptoms you're comaplining from.

To help boost blood sugar levels as you will need to do, buy some millet and cook it in buttemilk with honey to taste. You'll feel a buzz and a warm glow. It's also delicious.

Get some licorice root and chew on it. It greatly relieves anxiety and fatigue.

Try arometherapy (for anxiety and depression). Put some drops in your bath. You'll feel better and better each day.

In moderation, eat dried fruit such as dried bananas and figs that release their sugar slowly into the blood stream. Don't overdo it though. You'll feel a high all day.

Soak Museli overnight in fruit juice and eat it in the morning. Again, you'll feel a high all day. You'll you'll feel sedated and it'll boost your sex drive. Works great as an aphrodisiac. But again, don't overdo it, or your boy will start feeling stressed out again. The key is balance.

Take a good B complex and large doses of Vitamin C (at least a gram a day or more). Vitamin C kills the fatigue associated with hypoglycemia. If you can, take megadoses (200 mg or more) of all the B vitamins but not for a prolonged period or it can backfire. Take a good mineral supplement and/or add sea salt with no additives in it to your diet.

if you can go on periodic water fasts to help detoxify and clear out your system of junk, but not for more than a few days at a time. When fasting drink only distilled water if possible. But don't worry too much if you're not up to fasting.

Stay away from tea, coffee, alcohold and dairy products other than raw eggs. Try an egg nog (raw egg drink) in soya milk with honey or take it in fruit juice. This is a high renergy drink and what Arnold Schwarzernegger eats to keep so fit. It's also delicious, nutricious and highly addictive (in a good way).

Eat liver to boost your protein/B12 levels. Just don't overdo the meat eating and avoid meat generally (no problem for you since you've been a vegetarian).

Eat lots of fruit and vegetables but avoid too much fruit in the morning, so as not to trigger the pancreas into activity too early in the day, because that will lower you blood sugar level. Eat raw food whenever possible. Eat brown rice, lentils, lots of wholemeal grains.

Get Paul Bragg's book on how to breathe (only $4 to download online). I can send you a copy of mine for free if you email me. We all breathe the wrong way. Breathing the right way heals depression and increases IQ. Bragg;'s superbrain breathing exercises is a must for anyone who wants proper brain function.

Paul Bragg advised olympic champions, world statemen, Conrad Hilton (owner of the Hilton hotels), and at the age of eighty could himself outrun guys aged 20. He also surfed, went mountaineering, swimming, hiking, cycling, ran in marathons and so on.

In terms of homoeopathics, I've always been told that Argentum Nitricum works best for phobias (social phobia) and depression.

This is from the ainsworths.co.uk web site:

Gelsemium: 30c

This is one of the best remedies for apprehension (see Argent nit and Aconite). The particular symptoms are trembling and physical weakness on being exposed to a anxiety-provoking event. In extreme cases the patient can feel paralysed with the fear or anxiety and Gelsemium has been used for agoraphobia (fear of going out). It can also help some cases of constant fearfulness with no obvious cause. In either case the main indication for this remedy is the sort of anxiety that makes the patient feel incapable of doing anything, they feel helpless and would like to hide away in a corner. In severe cases the patient shakes or trembles with fear.

Aconite 30c

The main indication for this remedy is that the patient is simply very frightened. The patient is not suffering strange or peculiar phobias, they are just really scared. They might be paralyzed or driven to restless activity, and nothing seems to make them feel any better. It could be a panic attack with no obvious cause, or intense anxiety about something specific such as flying. Also, if the patient has been suffering from anxiety ever since a very frightening event, this remedy is most likely to help

Argent. nit. 30c

This is one of the best remedies for apprehension. The patient starts to dwell on the event and how something is going to go wrong. The more they think about it the worse it gets. They might go out for a walk to try to forget it but as they get warmed up from the exercise the problem magnifies leading to despair. Argent nit can also help some cases of nervous agitation with no obvious cause. In either case the main indication for this remedy is the sort of anxiety that drives the patient to move around continually, often doing irrational or pointless things. The need to comfort-eat sugary or salty foods, is also a strong indication for this remedy. Patients who need this remedy are usually hot and want a lot of fresh air.

I can also recommend a top homoeopath who can easily fix your problems if you email me. Anything to do with your health comes first. Get that right, and everything else will follow. Don't fear spending money on it.

To answer sycotic, Carcinosin is a prescription homeopathic which I cannot obtain (as mentioned no access to a homeopath) not sure B12 deficiency Simonc mentioned really applies as B12 (as cyanocobalamine) is added to most vegetarian products, as well as daily multivitamins. Thanks for the diet tips will try, as well as some of the other remedies.

johnrjjj2005 last decade
John,

Read up properly on B12.

B12 cannot be assimilated properly into the blood stream through supplementation. It must be absorbed from meat or injected.

Simonc last decade
John, I strongly urge you to read the following:

This is from helsinki.fi

'...B12 must be administered in the form of injections since oral B12 is not absorbed' in patients with a deficiency.

'... patients with unexplained neuropsychiatric disorders ... a course of
cobalamin therapy should be strongly considered, even in doubtful cases.'
[Lindenbaum 1988]

This is from veganhealth.org

'There is evidence that depression is often related to B12 deficiency. Some evidence suggests B12 deficiency can be confined to the brain. In such cases, massive doses of methylcobalamin might be necessary to replete B12 stores in the brain.'

This is from mts.net

In his book The Good News About Depression, psychiatrist Mark Gold tells a story about a woman who began to wonder if her depression might be due to a vitamin deficiency. When she asked her psychiatrist, he just paused in that invisible rolling of the eyes kind of way. Finally, at her insistence, the psychiatrist responded with an interpretation: she was just looking for an out from the 'real work' of her therapy.

It took another doctor to confirm that the woman did indeed have a deficiency of vitamin B6. ';With treatment,' writes Gold, 'her longtime depression lifted substantially.'

'Vitamins comprise only a tiny portion of the food we eat. We swallow no more than a few milligrams of most ones each day. But deprive us of even one of these micronutrients and we would sicken and die a slow and horrible death.

'We need these essential nutrients (essential because we can't make them ourselves) primarily because they help catalyze our myriad bodily processes – including the ones that keep our brains in gear.

'While every vitamin likely contributes to mood stability, some vitamins seem to contribute more than others – even to play a medicinal role as natural antidepressants. Take vitamin B12 (please! if you're a vegan).

'Studies suggest any depressed person has a 10 to 30 percent chance of being B12-shy.

'Some of the most florid psychoses in the medical literature – typically involving elderly people gone paranoid, manic, or violent – testify to the perils of unrecognized vitamin B12 deficiency. And that's only during the early stages. When the cause is the B12 malabsorption disease called pernicious anemia, as the years go by and B12 levels dwindle to nothing, irreversible nerve and brain damage and dementia insidiously ensue. This can also occur in strict vegetarians (vegans) if they fail to obtain B12 from fortified plant foods, like meat and milk substitutes, or supplements.

'A less dramatic, but more common symptom of early B12 deficiency is depression, typically of the listless, mentally foggy kind. In the 1950s, one such woman had so convincing a case of endogenous depression that shock therapy was vainly administered. Four years later, her slow-onset B12 deficiency was finally diagnosed. A few days and a few shots of B12 later, 'she showed a dramatic clinical improvement and came to life again,' her doctor T. N. Fraser reported. Another couple of months, and 'she looked the picture of health.'

'Because pernicious anemia is a highly age-related disease, most doctors today are alert for it in elderly patients with neuropsychiatric symptoms. But studies suggest any depressed person has a 10 to 30 percent chance of being B12-shy, usually without pernicious anemia as the cause. That deficiency, according to Cees van Tiggelen et al., 'has profound effects on several neurotransmitter systems and results in significantly reduced norepinephrine levels in the brain.' Norepinephrine is one of the brain's most important good-mood neurotransmitters.

'Logically, all depressives with low B12 should be replenished. In practice, many orthomolecular psychiatrists believe any depressive should take extra B12, even to the point of trying B12 shots (injections).

'For years, B12 shots have been an unofficial treatment for fatigued, run down, or depressed patients. (Large oral doses are very poorly absorbed, though sublingual and intranasal B12 formulations appear to give injections a run for their money.) The practice has been the butt (pun intended) of many jokes among skeptics. Yet what research there is has supported it.'

This is from a vegetarian site, vegsoc.org:

'The current nutritional consensus is that no plant foods can be relied on as a safe source of vitamin B12.'

Vitamin B12 Dietary Sources
The only reliable unfortified sources of vitamin B12 are meat, dairy products and eggs. There has been considerable research into possible plant food sources of B12. Fermented soya products, seaweeds and algae have all been proposed as possible sources of B12. However, analysis of fermented soya products, including tempeh, miso, shoyu and tamari, found no significant B12.
Spirulina, an algae available as a dietary supplement in tablet form, and nori, a seaweed, have both appeared to contain significant amounts of B12 after analysis. However, it is thought that this is due to the presence of compounds structurally similar to B12, known as B12 analogues. These cannot be utilised to satisfy dietary needs. Assay methods used to detect B12 are unable to differentiate between B12 and it's analogues, Analysis of possible B12 sources may give false positive results due to the presence of these analogues.

Researchers have suggested that supposed B12 supplements such as spirulina may in fact increase the risk of B12 deficiency disease, as the B12 analogues can compete with B12 and inhibit metabolism.

The current nutritional consensus is that no plant foods can be relied on as a safe source of vitamin B12.

Bacteria present in the large intestine are able to synthesise B12. In the past, it has been thought that the B12 produced by these colonic bacteria could be absorbed and utilised by humans. However, the bacteria produce B12 too far down the intestine for absorption to occur, B12 not being absorbed through the colon lining.

Human faeces can contain significant B12. A study has shown that a group of Iranian vegans obtained adequate B12 from unwashed vegetables which had been fertilised with human manure. Faecal contamination of vegetables and other plant foods can make a significant contribution to dietary needs, particularly in areas where hygiene standards may be low. This may be responsible for the lack of aneamia due to B12 deficiency in vegan communities in developing countries.

Good sources of vitamin B12 for vegetarians are dairy products or free-range eggs. ½ pint of milk (full fat or semi skimmed) contains 1.2 µg. A slice of vegetarian cheddar cheese (40g) contains 0.5 µg. A boiled egg contains 0.7 µg. Fermentation in the manufacture of yoghurt destroys much of the B12 present. Boiling milk can also destroy much of the B12.

Vegans are recommended to ensure their diet includes foods fortified with vitamin B12. A range of B12 fortified foods are available. These include yeast extracts, Vecon vegetable stock, veggieburger mixes, textured vegetable protein, soya milks, vegetable and sunflower margarines, and breakfast cereals.

Baryta Carb also brings down blood pressure. It is a tonic for the heart too.

Covers many of your symptoms.

Other med you can take along with it is Argentum Nitricum 200C...twice daily.

Probably can't order Baryta Carb. until Oct., what potency(ies) and frequency of dosage would be best to start with? Are the other remedies mentioned like carcinosin, argentum nitricum, and lycopodium, or Aurum Met. (the remedy I've been using) relevant? Would it be proper practice to continue other therapies such as Bach Flower in conjunction with any of the above remedies?

Baryta Carb 30C...four times a day...use as early as possible.

Continue Argentum Nitricum.

Argentum Nitricum (30C) seems ineffective after several doses over a period of 5 days. Will try Baryta carb, carcinosin, etc. as soon as possible. I have Bach Flowers- Wild Oat, Walnut, White Chestnut, Larch, and a few drops of Gentian, Gorse, Aspen left as well as mixing bottle. Do i resume these according to standard Bach directions?

Uzma...take two doses of Nux Vomica 200C ...in a gap of one hour ...every night before going to sleep.

Reduce meat and spice from your diet...also avoid pre-cooked foods.

Cooked foods ..prepare in a way that food value is retained...like soups. No deep fried cooking.
