Help for my son's cough please

My son is seven years old and has suffered with a croup type cough which sets in with every cold. The cough always seems to come from the throat area and always with what he says is a tickle in his throat. It sound harsh, grating and metal like and is always unproductive. When it starts it continues to where he coughs every couple of minutes. Once productive, usually two or three days, this croupy sound goes away. So it exists at the beginning of each cold for him. I have tried drosera, aconite, hepar, spongia, dpt, and combo cough remedies all to no effect. It always last two to three days. His throat usually feels tight at onset. He says it feels narrow with mucus in it. I hear him hawking to try and clear it. At this point he is usually very congested at bedtime and congestion continues thru the night. Cough always hits him in the middle of the night after 2-3am. The doctor says it is no longer croup at his age, but that it is just the same symptoms an older person with laryngities during a cold would experience. We are so beside ourselves. He misses much school and sports because of it and he is disheartened, not to mention exhausted from all the coughing. He is normally a child who is sensitive to seasonal allergies. He gets stuffy, watery eyes, hawks...even when he is well. Can any one help..I know cough are very difficult to treat, but I need to try for his sake.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
When he is cleared of his present attack and is quite well give him just one dose (4 pellets) of Tuberculinum 200. This should buid up his resistance to colds and coughs in a few weeks. You may repeat it in 2 months as a booster.

In the meanwhile he can take Ferr Phos 6x dose 2 tablets every 3 hours to abort an oncoming cold and Bell 30c dose 2 pellets every 3 hours to abort an oncoming cough. It is important to use these remedies as early as possible when he first feels a cold or cough coming on.

Rest at home is essential during a cold or cough and please do not give him any antibiotics for his cough unless on a SOS basis.

Thanks you for your gracious response. You sound experienced with this. I did read your post in reference to a little girl my son's age who was on many antibiotics. My son has never had one however, something we have been grateful for. The only thing he did receive was one round of immunizations as a child which he reacted to. He had cyclical fevers that lasted approximately one year where he would get a high fever for 3-4 days and be very lethargic (no other symptoms). Doctors said it was not vaccine related but I was beginning with Homeopathy and knew enough to stop. I treated him with the DPT remedy and after two cycles it disapeared. After that he would get colds like any other child and they would proceed uneventfully. Only once did he get a double ear infection that ruptured both his drums with in 12 hours (but no antibiotics for that either). He began to start colds with croup about three years ago (so at about 4-5 yrs. old). This cold has been different so far because instead of croup at the onset of a cold. He has come down with it on day three of his cold. I thought perhaps he had outgrown it, but now that school started he has caught his first cold in three months. Obviously time did not alter his response. He has awoken today with a cough that is totally seal/bark like. Last night I heard some croup, but now it is not even sounding like a cough. His cough is like a bark, sounds foreign. He says he gets upa bit of mucus , but only afetr the 4th or fifthth attempt. His throat is painful when he does cough though and he says his nose is drippy, unlike yesterday (you would think this cold would be past this stage). So do I give him Belladonna now that he is in this crisis? What can I give him now. I know to give him Tubercullinum once he is healed, but only twice in two months correct? For future reference, do I layer the belladona and the ferrum phosphate or use one at a time. I'm thinking they probably contradict each other, but not sure. Again, we are grateful to you for your time and your willingness to help my son. Thank you most sincerely.

Spongia Tosta 30c is the remedy for a barking cough. I believe that you have used it in the past and it you have it with you, you may start him on this remedy ASAP 3 times daily.

Steam inhalation is also useful and you can use the steam from an open kettle on the boil which he can breathe in for a few minutes. The steam will soften the phlegm which is being exuded from the lower lobe of his lungs and has to be brought up which is the reason for his cough.

It is not unusual for the virrus that was responsible for his throat infection to reverse its tracks and go up into the nose and you already know the remedy, Ferr Phos 6x that I have recommended. It is best however not to use two remedies at the same time as this is not recommended in Homeopathy although I have used two when I feel that they are indicated.

In your son's case you will have to judge which is more important -- the cough or the cold and use the appropriate remedy.

Thanks so much for the clarification. I will try the Spongis again. I had given up on it after having tried it so many times before for the acute onset of this same cough. I kept thinking I was missiing the mark with it. I will try it again and let you know how we fare with it. I will also prepare to give Tubercullinum once this has passed. Thank you for your willingness to help and God bless.

It occurs to me that you may like to use the wet dose method that I prefer to use which is made up as follows:

Insert 3 pellets of Spongia T 30c into a 500ml bottle of spring water and shake it hard (succuss) every time before a teaspoonful of the water which is now the remedy is sipped.

You can increase the frequency of the dosage to every 3 hours as this may hasten the cure.

Thank you for your advice. I did this once personally, but it was with an LM potency for a constitutional issue. I have searched my remedy kit and box and see that i have 30x and 200c spongia, should i try lower potency 1st? Also, being that I have tried spongia on him many times before with frequent low dosing, and no response, does this me i should try higher? Could it be the appropriate remedy this time? His cough right now has turned itself to dry unproductive cough. He keeps the croupy cough in the daytime sometimes. It is very hard to predict. Should I still give the spongia even so. Also, with Tubercullinum, should I only repeat twice 1 month apart or should I also use wet dosing. Do you have a recommendation with frequency? I apologize for all the the questions. We have struggled with this for many years now and as a mom my heart longs to see him healthy and well. I know that is what we all want for our little ones. He is athlectic, but unfortunately unable to respond to colds without this inflammation in his throat, vocal cord area. This is certainly where they all gather even if he does not suffer from throat infections (ie. tonsilitis, strep, swollen tonsils, etc.) although I find it interesting that you bEliEVE it stEms from the bottom portion of the lungs. I have taken him in to Dr. on occasion and they have said his lungs and bronchi have been clear. Again, we are indebted to you for your kindness.

Since you already have the Spongia 200c you may use it in the wet dose and give him 3 doses daily and report results. Please observe his coughing pattern and if he shows any increasing of his cough you must stop it immediately.

It seems a shame that your son has not been treated all these years with a prophylactic to ensure that he does not suffer from recurrent bouts of his URT problems.

You mentioned about a Strep throat and I would like you to take him to a medical laboratory and have a culture made of the bacteria in his throat. This is to check for Beta Haemolyticus Streptococcus which can be a difficult bacteria to overcome even with antibiotics. Please report the results.

I hope that you understood that the Tubericulinum may only be used once every 2 months and must be given only when he is perfectly well.

I would suggest that you also get a stock of Arnica 30c which I feel can also help him with increasing his resistance.

Does he drink icy cold water or drinks ? How about coke and other canned beverages ? I would like to ensure that he does not drink any liquid which is colder than 85F. This is to prevent his throat reacting with another virus which I have observed invariably attack almost immediately after icy cold drinks.

Thank you for your response. I went ahead and gave him the Spongia 30x that I had because I did not want to delay treatment. I gave him 3 doses yesterday and the cough did seem to pick up for the last couple of hours of the day, but by the third dose it again subsided. He went to bed without a cough and cough infrequently throughout the night. This morning he arose with a wet productive cough, which to us is always a blessing because it signals the end of the croup this time around. We live worrying about the next cold. In terms of Strep...he has NEVER ever had strep and has been tested previously, always negative. He merely begins with croup as a cold begins. So therefore it accompanies typical 1st signs of cold symptoms (stuffy/congested, runny nose, but his nose discharge is usually post-nasal).Will the Tubercullinum help him with croup or colds in general? He is in school, a veritable brewing pot for all these colds, unfortunately. We, as a family, do not drink cola, in fact, when he is ill we limit all sugar, knowing that this compromises his immune system. He loves fruit and tends to drink orange juice or water, or seltzer with juice. His diet is healthy. He is extremely athlectic and gregarious and has a likeable personality. BUT he seems to be weak when it comes to his immune system. He is the type to get cold and shiver when he is tired/sleepy or gets sick if tempature changes and he is too exposed. Will the tubercullinum reverse this pattern? I give him vitamins, cod liver oil, fish oil, acidopholous, etc. We've tried everything to bolster his immune system, but he still gets croup with every cold. He also sufferes from hayfever all the time. Puffy undereye area, congestion, hawks to clear throat, watery eyes ocassionally. He is also prone to constipation and canker sores on the inside of his mouth especially if he eats grapes, etc. Thought this might help you get a better picture of my son. I will limit cold drinks as you suggested and will give you updates for sure. Please let me know your thoughts as to the above. Thanks you for caring as you do.

I note that you have given your son the 30x in place of the 200c that I prescribed and that it has worked well. If this improvement continues, you can carry on with this dosage and report his reponse.

The Tuberculinum 200c should improve his resistance to colds and coughs.

I would not advise you to give him other vitamins and additives as long as he has at least one home cooked meal daily and of course fruit and veg. The fish oil is acceptable as it is reputed to build up one's resistance to colds etc.

You may like to know that I do not take any pills at all and at age 77 I believe I am in good shape with BP 120/80 and pulse 65. My secret is my daily dose of Arnica which I have taken for the last 11 years nightly. You might like to use it yourself and observe the difference in your quality of life.

Thank you so much for the prompt response. It is wonderful to hear of your good health. I will give him arnica nightly as long as it does not undo any benefit that the tuberculinum can give him. Is it ok to give both, then. Thank you once more! I too will try the arnica 30c to see if it can help me personally!

I would not advise you to give your son the Arnica nightly as I do not feel that it is at all necessary for a child of 7 years.

It is best used by adults especially those who are interested in fittness as it helps to keep the bodily functions in trim. If you are interested in further information on Arnica you are invited to visit:
