"phantom" smell of dirty socks

My husband is experiencing a puzzling situation...wherever he goes he can smell what seems like 'dirty socks' but nothing on or around him is causing the problem. We have noticed that it is everywhere he goes and it is definitely not him. He does not have a sour taste in his mouth, nor is his urine malodorous. He has no body odor. Can it be an emotional release memory situation???

thank you for your response. I will research where I can obtain that (I live on Vancouver Island, BC) Does this 'problem' arise from the brain only as there is no evidence of the actual odor anywhere. Can it be caused by a traumatic event?

This is interesting . It reminds me of when I was a child. Iwould always experience a 'phantom smell' associated to some of my reletives. It was phantom i know because i would get even if i just thought of them. If I seen them from across say - an auditorium I would get it. Id dont think I ever tried to explain this to anyone. As i grew older It went away(come to think of it so did they)anyway I have seen them occasionally and every time I do I think of that smell- but I dont experience it. I also remember a lot of dejevu as a child, that disturbed me greatly I recall. dont know if it is a similar respone or not.
Just a thought perhaps if he were to actually smell a pair of dirty sox maybe he'd be cured .Like curing like!.. Sorry bad joke.
Smell ya later.
