severe diarrhea in infant

I was referred to you guys and tis site by a friend up there in Canada. I'm hoping that someone can give me an idea as to what to do. Maybe someone has seen this 'out there' in your own kids?

My son is 9 weeks old and for the last two weeks he's had bad diarrhea. We've been to the doc the diagnosis in the beginning was a rotavirus. We're quite certain it's not that because even though it's a nasty one (about ten days duration), this case of diarrhea is just not going away. And none of the other family members have it.

(please excuse the graphic nature of the desciption)

The diarrhea is green and very mucousy. Strangely, sometimes it's smelly and sometimes it's not at all.

Besides suffering from a severely sore butt for which no creams and mixtures seem to help, he also cramps. He cries and pulls his little legs up when he's about to have a bowel movement. When I change his diaper, he's fine again.

A little about the feeding. On the regular iron fortified formula (similac) he had pretty bad reflux. My doc advised Zantac but instead of putting him on a med, I changed the formula to Similac Alimentum Advance with Iron. No more reflux.

But then in the middle of trying to get a handle on the diarrhea, I changed him to soy for a couple days. No change. The only difference was that the stuff went right through him instead of staying a couple of hours.

What else can I say? He is not dehydrated. The doc was pleasantly surprised. He's still gaining weight. He drinks oh, three to four ounces at a time four times a day plus one feeding at night.

I now have a call into the doc. She'd waid that she may need to talk to a gastroentorologist. I'm waiting for a call back.

This just needs to end. :(

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Does ur childs Stool smell sour? And at the same time the body?

If Not Then Give Argentrum Nitricum 1M : 3 doses 15 mins interval

If Yes Then Give Rheum 1M : 3 doses 15 mins interval.
If Rheum stops the diaorheea then ok otherwise follow up with MAG MUR 30.

I hope he will be fine!

Yes, my daughter had something similar when she was in infant. IIRC, it lasted 15 days.

It was rough.

I hope a remedy helps your child, I wish I'd known to use homeopathy.

tinka,

are u a friend of wendy who advised u to visit this forum.

please answer the following questions,

- are you breastfeeding him.
- how does he respond to mother's milk.
- are you on pain killers or any kind of medicines.

Dear Tinka, I would recommend just 3 doses of colocynthis 6x 5ml mlp, a drop in a small bottle of water, and a tiny amount of this dripped into the babies mouth from the cap, on one day only, and post back results. You may also want to switch to breast milk if you are not nursing already, as other forms are often the cause of such conditions.

Best wishes.

You are wonderful. The way you connected lifting of the legs before bowel movement, with colocynthis is excellant.

You see the other presriber is looking at the stool exclusively.

I think, colocynthis will do wonders for this child's diarrhoea.

i was infact wondering if a 9 week old infant would know how to relieve pain in the lower abdomen by doubling up.

I think the child lifting its leg is instinctive to create pressure on the belly as it can't still roll on to its stomach. So, Colocynth might just work.

Let us see.But very interesting observation, Jacob.I like it and also hope that the baby is cured.

I too feel it is an instinctive response.

wow, you guys, what great responses. Thank you so much!

Sorry for not posting earlier (holiday travel).

I need to carefully read and research your responses.

Update: the lab showed nothing. No rota virus, everything they tested for came back negative.

That's good news.

Dear Tinka, you are welcome, and that's the spirit, always check out any advice given over the internet, no matter who it is from. Never blindly accept anything when it comes to your health ;)

Good luck with the Colocynth if you decide to try it.

tinka,

the peculiar symptom of your son points towards COOCYNTHIS.

do check it out.

And thankyou all for the comments, which for some reason I only just noticed.

I think this is a good example of just how many different angles one must look at a symptom before making a prescription, rather than just blundering in, as it is only by this method that we find the similium of the condition.

Also, patients may express themselves in many different ways, and we must bare this in mind when considering or dismissing remedies on specific modalities or rubrics.
