Irritated Tongue

I've had a problem with my tongue for the past four weeks. It all started as a burning sensation (as if I'd burned my tongue on something) at the tip of my tongue and along the sides.

I let it slide for a few days thinking that it was just a burnt tongue, but after another couple of days I went to the doctor to find out what was wrong. The only symptoms I had/have are a pale tongue (not coated, just pale) and visible irritation (redness and slightly raised taste buds) at the tip of my tongue and slightly along the sides. There is also sometimes a slight tingling in my lips and gums - but not all the time, and never really any discomfort caused by it. Just something I notice when talking occasionally or if I clench my teeth together.

My doctor couldn't find anything wrong with me, but treated me for thrush anyway (which didn't help). I was also tested for pretty much every disease possible, and all tests came back negative. After another week of waiting, I saw my doctor again and she told me that at this point I could either go see an oral surgeon or try to calm down and see if my problem wasn't just brought on by stress.

After focusing on my tongue for nearly two weeks, it was a little difficult for me to just calm down (hah), so I decided to see what the oral surgeon had to say. He took a look at my tongue and noticed the redness and slight pale discoloration, but after telling him my symptoms, he couldn't classify it as anything either and also suggested that it might simply be mental at this point. He offered to do a biopsy, but rather than having my tongue hacked up, I decided to wait it out and see what happens naturally.

So two doctors have confirmed that I don't have any specific malady, but that I might just be crazy. Hah... Doesn't really help my 'burning' tongue issue though, so I tried a couple of homeopathic remedies to see if they would help.

I've been taking Sulphur 30c, Aconitum Napellus 30c and Belladonna 30c for the past week, and they don't seem to be making much of a difference. The 'burning' seems to have gotten less intense over the past few weeks, but my tongue is still a little overly sensitive to things like hot spices, mouthwash and toothpaste - so I've tried to cut out spicy food and stopped using mouthwash (switched to Echinacea tea to rinse with) and I'm using a bland toothpaste. My mouth also seems dry from time to time, so I’ve stepped up my water intake, and that seems to work.

Any ideas about what other homeopathic remedies I can try? I've thought about Mercurius Vivus, Phosphorus, Sepia or Causticum (based on this site’s Remedy Finder). But I didn't want to start taking any other things that won't do any good or are unnecessary.

Thanks,
Mike

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
can you describe how the affected surface of the tongue looks like.

its colour, shape of infected area, sensations in detail.

what makes it worse and what makes it better.

your other physical and mental symptoms.

rishimba,

My tongue is more pale than usual (all over), but it's not really a coating of my tongue. When I brush my teeth, I brush my tongue and the color never really changes.

Because my tongue is so pale, the taste buds at the tip of my tongue and along the sides are more visible than usual. The tip of my tongue is where most of the discomfort and redness is.

The sensation at the tip of my tongue is a very dull burning sensation, almost as if I'd burned my tongue a few days ago on some coffee or something. Eating spicy foods irritates the tip of my tongue as well as using mouthwash such as Listerine (the redness intensifies and the taste buds appear more prominent).

Usually, the only time I don't notice the sensation in my tongue is when I'm eating something.

I've got no other physical symptoms that I can think of. I'm perfectly healthy other than what's going on with my tongue. If it helps, the same time I developed this tongue phenomenon I also got strep throat. The strep cleared up, but the tongue did not. Also, the tongue issues started prior to me taking antibiotics for strep, so this wasn't caused by the antibiotics.

As far as mental symptoms, I'm not sure I have any other than a constant worrying about my tongue. I've never been so focused on anything for so long, and it's nearly impossible for me to zone out and not think about my tongue when I use it all day long (eating, talking, etc). I suppose I'm suffering from a moderate amount of anxiety because of this - especially since two doctors haven't been able to classify it as anything other than a possible stress-induced problem. Although, I don't recall anything especially stressful happening around the time this all started.

I've included a picture of my tongue which may help you understand my descriptions a little better.

Thanks,
Mike

Aside from the regular illnesses that people get throughout life (colds, flu, etc) I've only had two major problems. I've had my appendix out (not sure if that counts as an illness or not) and I have hereditary spherocytosis - as a result, I have no spleen (was removed when I was 4).

That is a new input. Will come back.

What is the Spleen?

The human spleen is an organ that creates lymphocytes for the destruction and recycling of old red-blood cells. The spleen is also a blood reservoir. It supplies the body with blood in emergencies such as a bad cut. The spleen is also the location where white blood cells trap organisms.

The spleen is shaped like a loose fist and is tucked under the left side of the diaphragm.

The average weight of an adult spleen is 0.44 lbs. During and after digestion, the size of the spleen increases. Infection of malaria or mono can also cause the spleen to increase in size.

If the increase in size is significant, the spleen can rupture. If rupturing occurs, immediate medical care is necessary. You may need emergency surgery to control the bleeding.

Other diseases that causes enlargement of the spleen are: rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus, sickle cell anemia, leukemia, lymphoma.

Where is the Spleen located?

The spleen is located in the upper-left part of your abdomen. It is protected by your rib cage.

Can the Spleen be removed?

Yes. If the spleen is ruptured, it can be removed. The spleen can also be removed because of certain kinds of cancers.

Mike,

You said 'Appendix out'

Has the Appendix been also removed through surgery??

Pankaj Varma

PANKAJ VARMA last decade
What is the Appendix?

The Appendix is a worm-shaped appendage that sticks out from the top portion of the large intestine.

The appendix can become inflamed. If an inflamed appendix is not treated immediately, the appendix can burst.

What is the Main Function of Appendix?

The main function of the appendix is unknown.

Diseases and Conditions of the Appendix?

Appendicitis and Carcinoid Syndrome are the most common conditions that affect the appendix. Appendicitis is inflammation of the appendix.

Carcinoid syndrome is a condition where caracinoid tumors grow in the appendix. The tumors may spread to other parts of the body.

Yes, both my spleen and appendix have been surgically removed. However, I don't think that either of these two things has anything to do with my sudden tongue problems. I've lived many, many years without a spleen or an appendix, and nothing like this has ever happened before.

Thanks for the information though.

take a few doses of APIS MELLIFICA 30C at 6 hours interval till you find a change in the sensation, better or worse.

post your feed back after 3 or 4 days of taking the remedy.

rishimba last decade
murthy, lets try with APIS first assuming that its a straight forward case of a local inflammation or allergy, we can try others if this doesnt work.

as the patient has no other strong symptoms, its better to treat one sided symptoms based on some most probable and natural causes.

I think Baptisia 30 twice a day for three days will help .

seconded.

I think Staphysagria 6 once could be given and observed if it helps.

I'll try the Baptista 30 first and see how that works. I'll keep you posted...

Well - Unfortunately, none of the three homeopathic stores I went to today had Baptista, so I'll have to order it online. It'll take about a week to get here, so I'll just post again when I start taking it.

It just seems wrong to pay $12 shippping for a $5 item. Hmm...

My husband and I are both experiencing what sounds like the same thing. Within days of each other, our tongues have become irritated. When we eat, they feel like they'be been burned. And the senisitivity seems worse around the tip and sides. The taste buds look a little red and inflamed. Have you found out anything yet?

try a few doses of APIS or BAPTISIA in the 30c potency at intervals of 3 to 4 hours.

hello. after reading your post, it appears to me that i have been suffering the same affects as you. i have been experiencing these same symtons for the past 8-9 months. at times my tongue is so irritated that i can't consentrate on anything else. i often chew gum to keep my tongue busy. the only time my tongue feels normal is in the morning when i wake up. but right after i brush my teeth or eat something the symtoms start up again. the irriation is on both sides and at the tip of my tongue. at this moment the sides are more irritated. i addressed the issue to my doctor, but she stated i would need to see the dentist since he does more the teeth and could address my oral health issue. my question is, has anyone found out what this is and if so, what caused it and is there a cure for it. unlike the couple suffering from the same problem, i am the only one suffering out of my husband and i. please help me to understand what's going on so i can address this issue with more clarity to my denist when i see him next month, or cure myself sooner somehow. thank you.

I wish I could reply with better news, but my problem hasn't fully cleared up yet. I haven't had a chance to try any of the remedies suggested here (Baptista). None of my local stores carry it, and I never got around to ordering it because it just slipped my mind.

I will say that the 'burning' sensation has pretty much gone away on its own, although I notice a mild discomfort every once in a while and my tongue still isn't back to its normal pink color (papillae stll look a little pale and elongated, but all of the prescription drugs and scrapers I've tried don't make any change). Maybe I've just gotten used to it. I saw my doctor, my dentist and an oral surgeon and none of them could see anything worth noting. I had planned on going to see the oral surgeon again to ask about possible nerve damage, but again, never got around to it.

I'm in the process of moving, but once I get settled into my new place, I will order the Baptista and make an appointment with an oral surgeon for another cosult. If I find anything, I'll let you know...

I think this could be the same issue I am having. For the past 6-7 months i have had these circular canker sore type problems on my tongue. The first time it was one, it was circular and white and then it kinda grew larger in diameter and the center was redish and the outside was white. It has a little discomfort but doesnt hurt too much. After it gets to a certain size it disappears completely for a day or two and my tongue is very smooth across the entire area where it was, then just it began a very small dot appears and gets larger in diameter no bumps, doesnt grow up wards just wide. Now there are 3 bumps that are continually doing this. I have been to an ENT doctor and they are all dumbfounded and have no clue. They gave me a prednisone steriodal mouth rinse and has not helped. Ive been to the doctor at different times of this occurance and only once was it really visible for them to believe me and they sent me for blood work everything came back negative. I wonder why they did not do a scraping? Any one have suggestions as to what this is?

I have had an irritated tongue exactly as Mike has described that came about a month ago. On and off, not sure why. Doctor doesn't know, Dentist does not know and I've never had a surgery outside of having wisdom teeth removed many years ago. There was a cold and some flu viruses going around and I was hardly effected. I only had strep one time when I was younger and all of the other times I've had it I didn't even know it unless a Doctor noticed it. There has been a little flem in the back of my throat that I can't swallow down and is hard to cough out. It does seem to bother me more in the evening, I found that even Beer can irritate it from the bubbles? To get to sleep one night I admit I smoked a little marijauna (friends all have it), I felt totally stress free and like a rock was lifted from my chest and my tongue while having visible taste buds and irritation felt incredibly better. Next day I ate cautiously and after focusing on it so much I think I've made it worse. I bought a vitamin B complex thinking that this may help but I also remember taking a vitamin suppliment that my wife decided to use 'Once a Day's' that was what I was on until this happened then I quit taking them. Could it be lack of vitmains? Too much magnesium, etc.. One condition I do have is a sore back from another bad mattress, and I have overactive yeast in my system. I also did take a yeast pill just before all of this came about. Yes it was expired, I was supposed to take two and in a week the other two. I never finished. It seems like some kind of digestive virus? Maybe in my own saliva? ANY IDEAS would be nice.

It turns out I have a Yeast infection, my Doc placed me on Fluconazole. I should be fixed in three days. Funny a friend of mine has the exact same thing and never said anything. Too strong of an antibiotic in your past can kill the good Flora in your digestive system allowing the yeast to take over. Good luck!
