The ABC Homeopathy Forum

feline infectious peritonis (FIP)

I noticed a couple of others posted on this board about FIP.

My parents rescued a small adult cat last winter who appeared to be suffering from an upper resperatory infection. After treatment with antibiotics, the cat got somewhat better, but its cold symptoms have hung on, sometimes getting better, but never going away.

Just in November the cat suddenly went blind and had what looked like a seizure or some other neurological disturbance. It also was quite sick with the respiratory infection. It was given a dose of antibipotics and a month later, is still blind (irreversible) and a runny nose. It was given a diagnosis of dry FIP. It is comfortable, and looks like it might have some time left, so I thought homeopathy might help him feel better in what time he has left.

Some symptoms:

-likes warmth (sits by heater), and seemed to get sicker in cold weather

-extremely lethargic. Sits around all day and requires barely any attention. Likes being left alone

-very calm -- even with children running around him, (and blind), he sits in the same spot)

-clear runny nose and eyes (at the times of worst infection, the discharge has been greenish yellow and stringy)

-fur on face has changed color to a noticibely lighter shade

-his general fur looks better now, but when very sick his long fur (he is some sort of himilayan or long haird siamese breed) looked matted and dry

-pees outside his litter box once in a while

If anyone has any suggestions, questions, and directions to point me in for remedies, please help. I work for a homeopathic doctor and am learning about acute prescribing, but this would be my first time with constitutional prescribing. Thank you.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
I’m not a homeopath and I don’t know what the other threads have suggested, but there is some information in George MacLeod’s book “Cats: Homeopathic Remedies”. He considers the diagnosis to usually be terminal but that supportive treatment may help.

He says remedies have included Cantharis for the peritoneal cases (it often involves abdominal distension due to fluid resulting from a fibrinous peritonitis). Carduus Mar for its action on the liver leading to the production of abdominal fluid. Tub Bov because of the similarity clinically to abdominal tuberculosis of the bovine. A nosode prepared from the infected peritoneal fluid for prophylactic treatment (but I wonder if it would help if the animal is already sick).

Good luck!

Thank you Daisy!

I am going to get a copy of the book you suggested. It sounds like a good place to start.

Thanks for the thoughts. I really appreciate it. :)

There is very little additional in MacLeod's book, although it is an excellent reference to have on hand.

Go take a look at a thread that was bumped in the Veterinary subforum at hpathy.com. Good advice there about supportive treatment, dosages, and use of the nosode.

Hi Daisy,

I did look up the thread you were referring to at Hpathy, and now I have a bunch of ideas to look up further.

Thanks so much for locating that thread for me.

I may try Baptisia for general immune system improvement, as well as another remedy for more specific symptoms if I can idetify one that is well matched.

I will most likely continue this discussion over at the Hpathy thread as questions come up.

Thanks again!!!

Thank you Maheeru -- this has all been very helpful. I truely appreciate the time you both put into helping me (and the cat!)

holymama, the homeopathic vet I had in mind at hpathy has recently moved to otherhealth.com, so you might want to try there.

like all of the posts i have first hand experience of this horrible killer disease. I lost my 3yr old cat Jack in january, and am still grieving. I have 7 others all have been diagnosed with the corona virus. Lately regardless of the supportive treatment my vet has given them their titer levels are still dangerously high. He has suggested we both search for Homeopathic cures.Luckily my vet is very open minded and believes that sometime uncovential natural medicines that support the body can just as easily have a breakthrough as ordinary medication, which is very skant in this infection. I have found 2 sites that may be of use to others. My vet intends to contact both so i will pass on what i have. If you type in feline corona virus or feline fip, you will get a list. the 2 that have interested us is a lady in Perth,Australia where a great deal of trials are going on named leanne pauls who is a Hollistic vet. or a practice in Oxon who's practitioner is chris day. I have been in touch with both and will pass on my findings to my vet to follow up. Our vets are busy people, and dont always have the time that we layman have, so perhaps we can help a little by passing on material like this for our vets to look through. If your vet is not open minded, find a new one.
I hope that this will help yourself and any other person who has to deal with this terrible disease.
