4 weeks old baby - need HELP!!

Hi,

I am a first time mom and had my baby via c section in December. She was 6 pounds 7 ounces and lost weight initially due to mild jaundice but was back at birth weight at her 2 week appointment.

Recently I have noticed that she has been spitting up milk after feedings and seems to be in pain. She seems constipated and has not been feeding well. She throws up milk even though we try to burp her and hold her upright for atleast 20 minutes after each feeding. The milk that comes out is not cheesy. I can feel that she brings up stuff to her mouth and swallows it back.
The baby has been exclusively breastfed but recently I was diagnosed with yeast infection and have been on medication.
The Dr. advised me that sugar promotes yeast growth so I have stopped drinking milk since I liked mine with sugar and have stopped drinking juices as well.
She has been jumpy and startles easily and needs to be swaddled. She used to sleep well but now she barely sleeps for 2-3 hours at a stretch and needs to be held.
She makes these wheezing noises when she is feeding which the Dr. felt were fine but I seem to disagree - not sure if it can be classified as asthamatic breathing.

I need help bad as it is tough to see such a little baby in pain and she was doing fine until a few days ago!

Please let me know if you would need more information and all help will be highly appreciated.

Thanks.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
I highly reccomend that you seek the assistance of a La Leche League leader in your area.

You might even be able to get someone to help you tonight. I know a mom who got help at 2 am from a local LLL leader who happened to be awake at that hour and emailed her back.

Before you assume that there is something wrong, why not consult with someone who is an expert on nursing a baby. More often than not they know more about this than pediatricians or other doctors.

Good luck!

I just went to the above link and found phone numbers of local lll leaders where I live. Maybe you can talk with someone as soon as tomorrow.

This is very common problem with infants- they have stomach pain till they are 3 months old.
There are lots of home remedies which you can find out from your own mother.
You can give Colocynthis 30. Take a half glass of boiled and filtered water and add two drops of Colocynthis 30. Give a half spoon of water evey half an hour till there is relief.
This will give relief . and you can also try home remedies. In India, nursing mothers drink alot of milk and milk products, so that she doesn't get deficient in calcium. Do not stop milk unless doctor says so

Thank you all for your response and I did call someone at LLL and spoke to them but she suggested the same things as my lactation consultant for the yeast. She was not sure if yeast is leading to the symptoms I see in my baby.
Dr. Mahfooz, thank you for your advice and I do have aethusa but is she too young for that medicine? She is definitely constipated and seems very uncomfortable and I cannot figure out how to help her.
I have been advised to stay away from anything white (except yogurt) and sweets and have been asked to take a lot of garlic. I am doing all of this.

Exclusively breastfed babies can not be constipated. It is normal for a baby to change stool pattern around 6 week mark. Some babies can go for week or more without having a bowel movement. Colic usually appears around 2-3 week mark and lasts until about 3 months. Colic is a catch-all term but is usually do to babies reaction to mother's diet. Dairy is culprit no. 1 but can be any number of things - wheat, onions, garlic, brocoli, cabbage etc. differes from baby to baby. Babies can also get gasy and uncomfortable from imbalance of fore and hind-milk. Do you have over-supply of milk? It is also normal for babies not to sleep very long a wake up every 2-3 hours. Homeopathy can be certainly helpful, but this seems like a breastfeeding management problem. Do research on La Leche League website and kellymom webiste
