The ABC Homeopathy Forum

Advice please

Brief back story....
Got diagnosed with NSU (Non specific Urethritis) and the clinic gave me antibiotics, but the sypmtoms came back.
This has happened three times now and I am on my 4th course of antibiotics (this time its for two weeks)

Having lost faith in meds I did some snooping around and found that antibiotics only move the illness around the body.....which is what has happened as the infection has moved further up my tubes and I now have epididymitis.

Like I say, i am curently on antibiotics, but im worried in case the same happens again, and so wanna treat with homeopathy.

Using various resources i have found a couple of remedies used for this. Namely Nux.Vomica, Pulsatilla and Aurum Metallicum.

My questions are these.
Can I start using these homeopathic remedies whilst im finishing my course of antibiotics? I have had confilcting oppinions on this.

Also, is it ok to use several remedies at the same time or should one only use one at a time?

Urethritis
Introduction:

Urethritis is an infection and inflammation of the lining of the urethra, the narrow tube that carries urine out of the body. In men, the urethra also carries semen. Urethritis is caused by bacteria and may affect the bladder, prostate, and reproductive organs. It occurs in males and females of all ages. Females, however, are at higher risk.
Signs and Symptoms:

There may be no symptoms of urethritis, particularly in women. When there are, symptoms include the following:

In men:

* Burning during urination
* Pus or whitish mucus discharge from the penis
* Burning or itching around the penile opening

In women:

* Painful urination
* Unusual vaginal discharge

What Causes It?:

* Bacteria and other organisms entering the urethra
* Bruising during sexual intercourse (in women)
* Infection reaching the urethra from the prostate gland or through the penis opening (in men)
* Bacterial infection after you have taken a course of antibiotics
* Reiter syndrome
* Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), such as chlamydia, syphilis, gonorrhea, or HIV and AIDS

What to Expect at Your Provider's Office:

Your health care provider will examine your genitals, perform laboratory tests on a urine sample, and take a specimen of mucus from inside the urethra and, in women, the vagina.
Treatment Options:

* Your health care provider may prescribe antibiotics to eliminate the organisms causing the infection.
* All sex partners should be treated.
* Sexual abstinence is recommended until treatment is completed, as disease can remain active even after symptoms have disappeared.

Prevention

* Limit the number of sexual partners.
* Always use condoms.
* If you experience symptoms or suspect infections, seek treatment immediately and notify all sexual partners.

Complementary and Alternative Therapies

Nutrition, herbs, and homeopathic remedies are useful in fighting infection, relieving pain, and strengthening the urinary system. Always tell your health care provider about the herbs and supplements you are using.
Nutrition and Supplements

Following these nutritional tips may help reduce symptoms:

* Try to eliminate potential food allergens, including dairy, wheat (gluten), corn, preservatives, and food additives. Your health care provider may want to test for food sensitivities.
* Eat antioxidant-rich foods, including fruits (such as blueberries, cherries, and tomatoes), and vegetables (such as squash and bell peppers).
* Avoid refined foods such as white breads, pastas, and sugar.
* Eat fewer red meats and more lean meats, cold-water fish, tofu (soy, if no allergy is present) or beans for protein.
* Use healthy cooking oils, such as olive oil or vegetable oil.
* Reduce or eliminate trans-fatty acids, found in commercially baked goods such as cookies, crackers, cakes, French fries, onion rings, donuts, processed foods, and margarine.
* Avoid coffee and other stimulants, alcohol, and tobacco.
* Drink 6 - 8 glasses of filtered water daily.
* Exercise at least 30 minutes daily, 5 days a week.

Im 28 and I have never had any problems down there before.

As far as i see it, its pretty straight forward. I caught NSU from a sexual partner.

I appreciate you posting info on urethritis, but as stated in the original post, 3 courses of antibiotics seems to have driven it deeper into me and I now have epididymitis, which has some different symptoms to NSU ...i.e pain in the testicles and lower abdomen.

I am currently about half way through a 2week course on anitbiotics , but in a bid to make sure it doesnt come back again, I wish to start with homeopathic also.

IS this ok whilst on antibiotics or is it better to wait another week until i finish the course and then start??

Also, is it ok to use more that one remedy at a time

Just as some further background on my emotional status (if it helps), the persistence of this infection has made me feel frustrated, angry and depressed!!!

Question reg. more than one remedy at a time:

Don't do it on your own...coz ...have to see the drug relationship between the two or more meds chosen.

Thanks,
i did get some Cantharis for when I had NSU, as i thought this helped with UTI's and bladder infections, but when I found out i had epididymitis, i saw that
recommended remedies included aurum metallicum, nux vomica and pulsatilla/

Start with Cantharis....after one week ...will see thestatus of residual symptoms and then decide what is to be given next.

Post feed back after one week of taking the med.

Is that you ? :

Re: side effectof thuja- q From soulman on 2010-05-11
Im certainly not a Dr or a homeopath, but I can certainly concur that thuja works for warts.
It worked for mine anyway.

I had several plantar warts on my hands, and after trying a variety of off the shelf treatments (including salysilic acid and a home freeze kit), i came across Thuja.

I had the pillules. The first pack didnt work, so I bought another pack and they were gone with in a week.

I am not aware of this causing any health problems further down the line.

Good luck

Does your problem get worse in rainy season ??

Are there any sediments in your urine like pus cells, mucous cells, milky colour etc ????

Is urination painful ??

Does the urine flow >>>> stop and come >>>>>again stop and come etc.

You still did not tell me your age ?? It is important to know for homeopathic analysis.

Meanwhile ..take Cantharis as suggested..I am asking these questions so as to get a hang of what needs to be given next.

Definition of Epididymitis
The long, tightly coiled tube that is located behind each testicle and carries sperm from the testicle to the vas deferens is the epididymis. Inflammation of this structure, usually as a result of bacterial or chlamydial infection that travels from the urinary tract to the sperm duct, is called epididymitis.

Description of Epididymitis
If each testicle is rolled gently between the fingers and thumb, a comma-shaped lump can be felt draped over the top. This 'lump' is a narrow tightly coiled-up tube. If the coils were stretched out, the tube would measure 20 feet - over three times average male height.

The lumps are the epididymes (plural), which is Greek for 'upon the twins.' When sperm are made, they enter the epididymis, and are stored while they mature. They need this extra time to develop before they set out on the long journey in the race for the egg.

Epididymitis is an infection of the epididymis, the comma-shaped lumps which 'sit upon the twins.'

Causes and Risk Factors of Epididymitis
In youth, the infection can be due to sexually transmitted infection from chlamydia or gonorrhea and is associated with urethritis (inflammation of the urethra). In older men over 40, it is associated with urinary tract infections and prostatitis.

Symptoms of Epididymitis
The main symptoms are fever and pain, developing progressively over several hours, in the back portion of the testicles. Symptoms include fever and chills, pain in the groin, and tender, swollen epididymes.

Sudden pain in the scrotum, rapid unilateral scrotal enlargement, and marked tenderness of the testes, spermatic cord, and groin are characteristic manifestations.

Symptoms may follow acute physical strain (heavy lifting), trauma, or sexual activity. There may also be pain at the tip of the penis and urethral discharge.

Secondary orchitis with a swollen, painful testicle may occur. Orchitis is the generic name for any inflammation of the testicles. The symptoms of epididymitis and orchitis are much the same. Sometimes the names are used interchangeably. The symptoms of both are reddened scrotum, tense swollen testicles with sudden acute pain and fever. Orchitis can also be the result of a sports injury, or after surgery to remove a scrotal cyst, or vasectomy.

Do you have an inflammation / swelling of any of the testicles...... Is there pain in any of the testicles ??

If yes..specify which side.

Do you frequently have coughs ?? Explain type of cough.

Is your face swollen...specially under the lower jaws ??

Do you experience breathing problems ?? When does it occur ??

Yes that was me, with reference to the Thuja post.

I dont really recall the condition varying in severity, just that they were always there, so I cant really comment on that. Plus, we dont really have a rainy season in the UK...its always raining :)

Thanks for the other info though. Just so you know, i dont really have any symptoms from the NSU anymore, and all my symptoms i feel now are to do with the epididymitis, pntermittent pain in the testicles and lower abdomen.

In light of this information do you think i should still take Cantharis first??

soulman last decade
I did mentio that I was 28 in one of my earlier posts

I dont have any swelling of the testicles, just the tubes on my right side, and yes i do feel some pain in both testicles and in the lower abdomen.

I dont frequently get coughs no

I dont have a swollen face, but now that you mention it, my jaw is painful on the right side (like i have pulled a muscle or something) but have no idea how this happened. I just thought i must have slept in a funny position.

I do not experience brething difficulties

soulman last decade
.....and no, i do not have difficulties urinating. It is only very slightly painful in the morning, but during the day its fine.

I do also get some white string like substance floating in the urine!!!

Take Cantharis as suggested earlier.

Med always works ...when one gets to know : what started the problem.

PANKAJ VARMA last decade
For an infection of the genito -urinary tract...best to start with Cantharis..that is why I have suggested you to use Cantharis.

For next in line...choice of med..... read below, a post made by another well informed member of the Forum (in the past).

Your problem is better known as Orchitis by most people.

Orchitis is an inflammation of one or both of the testicles, often caused by infection. Orchitis may be caused by numerous bacterial and viral organisms. It is usually a consequence of epididymitis, which is inflammation of the epididymis (the tube which connects the vas deferens and the testicle).

ORCHITIS, Inflamattion of Testis - Signs & Symptoms

- Scrotal swelling
- Tender, swollen, heavy feeling in the testicle
- Tender, swollen groin area on affected side
- Fever
- Discharge from penis
- Pain with urination (dysuria)
- Pain with intercourse or ejaculation
- Groin pain
- Testicle pain aggravated by bowel movement or straining
- Blood in the semen

Homeopathic Medicines & Treatment for ORCHITIS, Inflamattion of Testis
#Pulsatilla.
Orchitis and epididymitis from suppressed gonorrhoea, calls for this remedy. The testicles is retracted, enlarged, sensitive and dark red, there are dragging pains along the spermatic cord, and shooting down into the thigh. Hamamelis. The keynote for this remedy is exquisite soreness. There is a dull aching pain in the testes and spermatic cords. Franklin thought highly of this remedy in orchitis. Oxalic acid. Neuralgic pains in the spermatic cords. Belladonna. Great sensitiveness, intolerance of pain and reflex neuralgias indicate this remedy.

#Clematis.
Gonorrhoeal orchitis, or that brought on from cold, where the testicle is a hard as a stone and very painful, calls for this remedy. It especially reduces the swelling and sensitiveness. The testicles are retracted, drawn up and sensitiveness and pressive pains in the spermatic cords, especially the right. There is much urethral irritation, and the pains are generally aggravated at night by warmth of the bed. Gelsemium ' is a superior,' says Helmuth, 'when the disease arises from a suppressed gonorrhoeal discharge or from exposure to sudden cold and wet.'

#Rhododendron. [Rhod]
Chronic orchitis, indurated testicles which tend to atrophy; a characteristic sensation is a feeling in the testicles as if crushed. Aurum. Chronic orchitis, worse on right side with neuralgia of the cord. Staphisgaria has a burning and stinging pain in the right spermatic cord, with drawing in the right testicles.

#Spongia [Spong]
produces a hardness and swelling of the testicles, and it is suitable for mal-treated orchitis when there is a squeezing pain in the testicles. It suits chronic orchitis and epididymitis. The spermatic cords are swollen and painful, shooting pains course up the spermatic cord. In orchitis it follows Pulsatilla and Hamamelis.

After the use of Cantharis...start taking Spongia Tosta 200c.

However..post feedback after a week...if I need to fine tune the recommendation...will do so.
It would be best for me to review your case after one week of taking Cantharis.

Spongia works in all kinds of cases.

Cantharis will take out any infection that might persist in the genito-urinary tract ...kidney, bladder, tubes, urethra etc.

Spongia will take care of the rest.

Pl. note: Pulsatilla anti-dotes Cantharis...so avoid using that.
