remedies for sympathetic and parasympathetic imbalances?

Seeking Advice

Have been to three homeopaths without much luck

Current issue - recovering from mental, emotional, and physcial strain of marital separation and international move with small children.

Key symptoms present since birth but greatly increased over the last decade are:

1. overly sympathetic (taking on or even "proving" the vibration) to people, hot/cold, medications, vitamins, sweets, caffine, herbs and homeopathic remedies

2. profuse perspiration (especially hands/feet) everywhere but the face. Perspires more in the morning/during the day. Perspires more with over exertion or interacting with others.

3. skin turns extremely blue in cold weather.

4. my adrenals sometime go into overdrive and there is a delayed reaction (sometimes as much as two days) to physical/emotional exertion

More recent symptoms - last two years

1. changes in digestion/sluggishness

2. constricted feeling in solar plexus, heart, chest area, as if I can't take a deep enough breath. This feeling is aggravated/activated by anger, herbs/remedies that influence the liver and digestion.

What other homeopaths have prescribed:

1.6c lycopodium aggravated the symptoms (taken one year ago)

2. 1M carbo veg relieved some of the physical symptoms but exaggerated the mental and emotional ones (taken one year ago

3. one 6x dose of nux vomica taken for a headache, aggravated the solar plexus constriction (taken two months ago)

4. one 6x china relieved some of the constriction but caused edema in hands/feet, sore joints, greatly exaggerated when exposed to any kind of heat, hot showers or physical exertion. (taken two months ago) This is still persisting.

what to do? any advice will be appreciated.

Remedies under consideration - sulphur, phosphorus, mercury

Much appreciation for your time!

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Remedies under consideration by whom? If yourself, give it up, even I am terrible at diagnosing myself.

How do you see the sympathic and para sympathic systems? Please explain your view of the activities of these two very different activities.

I know these and I will be listening for clues. I do have some ideas about treatment, and it does not include those three remedies.

Be more feeling, more human, Talk by saying "I feel...." at each sentence. Don't be afraid of saying more than you have as this is how homeopathy works, must report a lot and let the emotional out. You are reporting as if you are speaking of someone else. Very precise, which is good in one way, but we need the other side of feelings.

You did not put a name at the top of your posting and this is playing havoc with our replies. Do a post reply and you will see what I mean.

For those reading this, when the mess comes up, give it a minute and click "back" at the top left and it works better.

Many thanks for your reply from Natalie!

Why do I think it is a sympathetic/parasympathetic related?

Well, when I perspire in interactive situations my body acts as if it is in a fight or flight situation. My pulse speeds up, heart pounds, solar plexus sometimes shiver etc. Mentally I feel at ease, however, my body reacts at if it is under stress. Unvoluntarily, I can assimilate the vibration (physical health, attitudes, stress, etc) and feelings of the person I am interacting with - the challenge is shaking it off! In a hot room I feel excessively hot, In a cold room, I turn blue.

Remedies under consideration came from a homeopathic psychology book.

Thank you again Sabra!

Sabra,
EMOTIONAL SYMPTOMS

During the last two years, I felt a mix of anger and fear in regards to the separation. At the time it transpired these thoughts were obsessive. On the inside these expressions felt out of my control, and consequently I tried harder to control life on the outside. During this time I felt depleted of energy and my body could not find a comfortable state of rest. Deep sleep ceased and I began waking up for two to three hours every night. Digestion became sluggish, bloated, full feeling, felt stitches or pinches in liver area & stomach.

At present, some of the heavier feelings have subsided, espeically the fear, but I still feel sudden outbursts of frustration, sadness and anger. I find it easy to express these feelings, but in the heat of expressing them, my solar plexus/heart and chest constricts/tightens and my breath is short as if I can't catch a deep enough breath. In the past physical stress did not accompany my expression of strong emotions or feelings.

Perspiration usually begins early morning with my first waking thoughts. It sometimes subsides with morning chores but increases with morning yoga or qigong.

In regards to sympathetic nevous system - often it seems as if it is ready to take over with the slightest reaction to outside stimulus.

As a child, my mother over reacted dramatically and forcefully to the smallest of issues, keeping her children nervous and on edge, impacting the development of adrenals and nervous system.

Hope this helps clarify

Blessings/Natalie

Dear Natalie, you gave a very good report. Thank you.

You know the Sympathetic side very well. You are less familiar with the para-sympathetic side.

This is the calming side and you can activate it by gathering saliva in your mouth. After awhile when you can do this at will, it enables a more quiet calm feeling and helps you get through the anxiety.

I have seen operations done without anesthesia by first teaching the patient to learn to relax and activate the para-sym by gathering saliva.

They go into the op and have a trusted friend at their head to talk to them and they undergo the most strenuous surgery, awake, without pain and also no infection. This was a bonus no one expected.

The USA would never allow this. We allow hypnosis in dentistry. This surgery was done in Spain. And continues to be done on a daily basis.

So while I look for a remedy for you, you can begin this now. If you notice, when you are most tense and upset, your mouth is dry. Sympathetic is dry mouth.

You are doing a lot of good things for yourself. Try to remember, if you do not place fault and just see is as a grieving for a loss, a disappointment, a little death, you can appreciate your self caring more.

Drink at least 10 cups of bottled water per day. Do not drink any caffeine, it gets rid of water faster than you drink it. Dehydration feels very bad physically.

To clarify thinking with homeopathy, one cannot take a remedy for each symptom.

Carbo veg didn't "exaggerate" the mental, but "let it out," released it. One needs to think more abstract when finding a remedy. It is nothing like allopathic thinking.

MDieties want to name every little thing and give a pill for this and pill for that. It causes so many side-effects we lose track of what is being treated.

When you say you are picking up on the person you are with, this is an old habit of the little girl with the mother. Without realizing, you are trying to help. Stay away from anxious people for awhile, you have nothing to give. You need it all right now for you and your children.

The sub conscious is full of incorrect info about how to act with someone else in anxiety because of mixed messages from your mother. It is unfortunate, but she didn't know any better.

Now you have a chance to rebuild your life in many ways. A new beginning for many aspects of who you really are under all the grief, sadness and anger.

Remember you are born perfect. You can regain this. Put yourself first. Oh, this goes against the grain? everything women have been taught?? We must be last?? Full of guilt and shame???

When you put yourself first in love, caring and regard, then you have it in you to love your children better. To greet co-workers with good feelings, instead of feeling like one cannot measure up as they do. They do what? They feel the same way. One must learn we are all similar under the skin and need to be accepted and loved JUST AS WE ARE...WHERE WE ARE...NOW.

Please keep in touch. I will be studying.

Dear Sabra, Thank you for the most generous, insightful and informative reply. Wow, I was excited to learn that the parasympathetic nervous system can be activated by gathering saliva. This step is also done in the qigong.
Building up saliva in your mouth (swishing it around 36 times) before circulating it. How purposeful!

Your reply suggested drinking more water. From early childhood to present day I have rarely been thirsty. When I drink too much water (48 ounces per day) my body feels sluggish and out of balance. I am 4'10'' and 100 lbs.
Over the last year I sometimes wake up in the middle of the night with an extremely dry mouth, great thirst and a very red nose. In addition the tiniest sip of alcohol causes heat to rush to my nose/face. Liver heat? These symptoms became more pronounce after taking the nux and china.

In regards to sympathies. When I spend time with someone vibrant healthy/at ease, every one of my symptoms vanish for 1-3 days. When I spend time with someone anxious/stressed
I may feel cramps in my solar plexus or worse. Any kind of personal interaction leaves an imprint, some subtle, some not so subtle.

As you suggested - putting myself first - what a concept! but certainly not an unrealistic one! more often I overextend myself in friendships. and yes, Shame/Guilt are most familar to me. Asking for help can also be a challenge.

Sabra your time/energy are greatly valued!

I too will be studying!

Still not happy with one remedy for you as yet.

I suggest you think more on the spiritual side of your life. You obviously have one, even though you do not mention it.

One thing, you are not exercising is the "shield" around yourself. One must imagine/manifest a covering to "shield" oneself from vibrations other than oneself. I do not shake hands for this reason.

It is like a clear bottle that is open at the top to "receive" and also an opening at the bottom to be grounded to the earth. Like a two ended bottle with short necks. This protects you from unwanted vibs so to speak.

When one gives to others, one receives from above and is the facilitator to "send it out," but not one's own energy.

Also, you must consider...When someone you are around that is level in their lives and this causes you to settle down...are you "taking" from them?

One must care for oneself personally. Not to enjoy the settling by being with another.

When one has a dear friend this seems not to matter, you are both as one.

Yes, I believe we ALL are "one" but I am hitting the fine points here.

This is a view, you may not be doing this at all. It is the old thoughts of "sucking" from someone else when one needs energy, surely this has happened to you; someone sucked you dry??

Have you ever read the "Philistine Prophesies" These books teach the hows and the reasons.(2)

I will continue to study.

About the water, do the best you can. Should have some at bedside for night. Also a tablet for thoughts.

Greetings Sabra - so very pleased to get your reply - You speak like an old friend. Yes, I have read the celestine prophesies (most enjoyed!)and others like it. Perhaps the Philistine version is better!laughing with you!

Thank you for bringing up the spiritual side, as it is most important and moves us right into the heart of what matters. Yes, I too believe we are all One - "Self is everywhere, shining forth from all beings"

What you said about being the facilitator of energy vs. using your own makes so much sense to me. I will hold this thought/image.

I still feel my situation has more to do with sympathies, resonating with the vibration of the person I am with. It also happens with hot/cold temps. If anything, I give away too much of my energy, but recently I have learned to be more guarded with it. I have used shields and releasing ceremonies but not consistantly. I am very keen to try the shield you have described with the opening at the top to receive and one at the bottom to be grounded to the earth. Again, this is the same vision one holds while practicing qigong! A pity I hadn't thought to use it outside of the qigong.

Once at a healing retreat I embraced someone and my entire body began to perspire. Shortly afterwards I learned the person I embraced had just been released from prison, carring with him many wounds/scars. A friend who was with me at the time placed her hands on my shoulders and helped me to breath the heavy feelings down into the earth.
This was a good lesson.

For me - sympathy (sympathetic)means constantly saying yes, yes, yes, completey open, without any boundaries. Antipathy (parasympathetic) means saying no, no, no, closing off the world. This exchange happens consciously and unconsciously, keeping us in balance. the Question??? Am I overly sympathetic or grossly lacking in parasympathetic functions. There must be an on or off switch somewhere!

Why Mercury, Phosphorus and Sulfur were considered:

The reasons mercury appealed to me - it is reactive, readily adaptive to every circumstance and forms amalgams with other metals, taking upon itself the properties/qualities of what it is united with. It is also a reflector of light, mirroring whatever it perceives about the world. I have been aware of this thought/mirroring quality since childhood.

In some remedy profiles phosphorus is used for sympathetic over load, emotional exhaustion, too giving/too pleasing etc.

Sulfur is used for perspiration initiating in early morning.

The challenge is finding a remedy for the "whole" being.

Additional information:
Perspiration greatly increases with fine detailed projects like sewing. It also increases when I watch a movie. Perspiration is also triggered by certain foods, especially lemons, limes, papaya and oranges. The more I perspire the colder/clammier I get.

In late afternoon or evening perspiration usually subsides.

Regular meditation helps the most with the perpiration.

In social settings if I drink any alcohol the perspiration subsides. My Mother and Aunt share similar perspiration issues. Both of them consume alcohol daily.

Since childhood my skin is generally a little bluish, and far more so in cold temps. However, ever since I took the nux and china (two months ago) my skin has taken on a reddish/blue tint, turns red and swells with heat. When I go for long walks/hike, my hands/feet swell. These symptoms were not present before the remedies.

So far the principle of ayurvedic medicine, as well as chinese medicine make the most sense to me.

Again - Sabra many thanks for your time and energy! I so look forward to your reply.

Blessings,
Natalie

______________

You are mixing up the "sympathethic nervous system" with being sympathic.

The S. Nerv. sys is NO, NO, NO, fight or flight. Fear and anger. Antipathy.

Sympathy for another is in our conscious mind that contains an ego. So for the ego, we say yes...? Give, Give, Give. This is how we cripple others and our children, we are far too sympathic and do not require they be strong and stand on their own two feet.

Para Sym nervous sys, is calm and loving. Yes, Yes, Yes. (like empathy, been there, done that)

PS places you in a condition of no ego where you are calm, loving and gracious to others without them being upsetting to you. and then one can "give" without the other "taking and taking." (i.e. becomming crippled)

This is how we keep from taking things personally and feeling hurt feelings.

Sabra, Thanks for the clarification! You're right - I had some of it mixed up and backwards.

You've given me more to think about.

Hello Sabra - thank you again for sharing your wisdom. You made some really good points about the ego, sympathies, and over giving/crippling others.

Some updates - recently I visited a local N.D. Her advice was to first address the swelling/redness in my hands, fingers, feet, above the eye lids and stiff joints/knees with 30X of Apis. This swelling I have experienced is highly sensitive to heat. Three day s after taking the apis, there was no change at all in the symptoms. This morning we moved to plan B - 30C of Arsenicum. I shared in one of my earlier postings that the redness/swelling began immediately after taking one 6X dose of Cinchona Officinalis and has lasted for more than two months.

Any advice/thoughts?

I also consulted an accupuncturist. After four visits, he said I have too much liver heat and a weak heart protector meridian. In the end, my physical symptoms have remained the same, however, the interaction proved beneficial for balancing some emotional areas.

I am still reading up on the workings of the sympathetic/parasympathetic systems and herbs used to stimulate or inhibit them. It's all quite fascinating.

Blessing,
Natalie

Hi Natalie, This new information about the CINCHONA 6X is telling. When one has a response to a remedy like this that seems negative, it means it is "good" but needs potency changed.

Rather than buying another potency, make up a bottle of drinking water with one dose of the CINC. and hold the whole bottle in your hands and say, "Match this remedy to the needs of my body for complete healing." Thank you, etc.

Sip the bottle for a day or two and report any results.

After reading again, it seem that you, as an individual, should not take remedies in low potency. Anything under 30X is considered low.

After this, let's regroup and see where you are.

As for the heat in the liver, I have a remedy but unsure if it is for you.

Chinese meds and homeopathy work well together. I have a orental doctor friend and we have tried some things for others.

In your thinking, you sound much better and more up. Keep up the good work.

Blessings, Sabra

Hi Sabra - Your intuition is right on target! I had the same feeling about avoiding the lower potency remedies and wondered why I have a much smoother transition with higher potencies.

What you prescribed with the water/CINC is very much in line with my thinking! THANK YOU!

In regards to the arsenicum 30C prescribed by the local N.D. my current symptoms (redness/swelling) are less reactive to cold, and now remain swelled for longer periods of time.

When interacting with friends or groups, sometimes my solar plexus contracts and trembles. It always happens when we are speaking about something I feel a deep connection to. It's the same tightening reflex you feel on the inside after being out in the cold for an extended period of time. This trembling even vibrates my kneck, head and hands.
Mentally, I am usually feeling quite good about the interaction with the group. This weekend, after taking the arsenicum, the trembling feeling was far more active at my group study. This shaking feeling is also accompanied by great perspiration.

Yes, my thinking is much lighter and I feel good. It's nice you noticed!

Blessings and Appreciation,
Natalie

You know Natalie, you are coming through as possibly clairvoyant.

I suggest that you keep this awareness to yourself as others will want you to "read" this and that and you will get side-tracked from your natural growth. Do not let ego get in the way of your growth.

One has to pass through a certain amount of "keeping to oneself" until things settle. You will know when something is right to go forward, in whatever you are being prepared for.

I suggest going to bed with a notepad and pen from now on.

Blessings, Sabra
