Horse needs help (laminitis)

Hello. I take care of a horse who has been suffering from laminitis for about 8 months now. Laminitis is a painful condition that is caused by a circulation problem in the (front) hooves. Circulation is impaired, the tissues die, and the bone in the hoof starts to rotate. In the worst cases it can rotate out through the bottom of the hoof, at which point the horse is usually euthanized. This mare isn't to that point yet, but I fear she will be soon.

This mare was originally treated with conventional drugs and then an herbal product with no luck. She is now receiving a nutritional product with (among other things) lots of anti-oxidants and nitric oxide producers. This has made her comfortable, but nothing more. She has also received an acupuncture treatment, which seemed to help, and I continue to stimulate the acupoints with a cold laser on a daily basis - as directed by the vet.

I am very interested in homeopathy and am hoping somebody could suggest something for this horse. I will try to list all symptoms I can think of...

Basic laminitis symptoms
*Congestion of blood in front hooves, throbbing pulse in front legs, separation of tissue in hooves, pain, difficulty walking, her problems started first in the right hoof then the left.

About this mare...
*She is very stoic about the pain, loves company and attention, loves to be massaged/rubbed, has a dry and flaky hair coat, has had a flexure deformity in her right front leg since birth caused by a tight tendon, poor hoof quality, she is fine boned with long legs, tends to be thin, typically doesn't drink much, she seems to be worse in the morning, and about once per year she has an allegic reaction to something which results in her head swelling up - mostly around her cheeks. In the past she has received vaccinations, steroid shots for the allergic reactions, and conventional pain relievers. She was also given Traumeel injections for 10 days as prescribed by the vet who acupunctured her a couple of months ago.

It was suggested to me by another vet to dose her with Calc Fluor 30, once per week for 4 weeks, to help her tissues return to normal structure. I have just started that, but I am interested in a constitutional remedy for this mare. When I have used the Remedy Finder to search her symptoms, I come up with Phosphorus most often, but am not sure if this is correct.

If there is any more information I can provide, please ask and I will do my best.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
I should also add that the right front leg with the tendon problem has been injured twice. Our vet thinks that she just has weak tendons.

Also, her mother died at the age of 12, also from laminitis. This mare is currently 14 - about middle age for a horse.

Thanks

For starters, Apis 6C or 30C even up to 200C for any allergic reaction and the swelling, puffiness, are all indicators. It is a first aid remedy that should be kept on hand.

Will post again regarding Laminitis.

Yes, she sounds like Phosphorus constitutionally. They are like the flare of the match. Lots of flare and then they burn out quickly, tire easily.

Phosphorus-Life of the party, loves people, strangers, happy and outgoing, sensitive to light, noise, odor, music, touch, can get offended if not the center of attention.

Loves company, massage, being groomed, being on stage (performing),wants cold water, scared of loud noises like fireworks, thunder and lightning. long, thin, tall, narrow bodies, easily fatigued, clairvoyance, anus remains open after defecating, may vomit food or water almost immediately after it warms the stomach.

Not all symptoms have to match, but look for the key indicators like, likes and dislikes. You'll get the jist.

If this is the remedy dose the horse with 200C strength, one pellet diluted in 4 ounces of water. Stir in a cup, until dissolved and pound cup of remedy into the palm of your hand every time before you give the horse a tablespoon. One dose at a time, watch, observe, let the horse tell you if more is needed.

Blessings,

I wanted to pass along this additional info, for your notes on horses.

Slippery Elm Bark-For internal inflammation, mix two tablespoons in some bland feed. DO NOT give to pregnant mares.

LUCERNE TEA-For sick horses. It is an enriching tea given to horses that are ill. Put one biscuit of hay in a good-sized container and pour some boiling water just enough to cover the hay. Cover the container immediately to stop steam from escaping and let it steam for and hour or so. Drain the hay and give the tepid liquid. Half a cup of unprocessed honey may be added and dissolved.

Arsencium Album-Good for exhaustion in horses.

China-foals with anemia

Ledum-Horses with a nail in the hoof. Hangs the leg and stands only on 3. Tetanus preventer, bot-fly, ticks, or lice.

Pulsatilla 30C-After vaccinations, dry cough.

The above are from www dot wholisticanimal dot com.

-Inflammation of the corium following changes in the hoof. ARNICA 30C and BELLIS PER. 30C and RUTA 30C=1-2 doses daily for 1 week.

LAMINITIS-Acute-BELLADONNA 200C-Throbbing arteries with a bounding pulse; sweating.
NUX VOMICA 200C-Laminitis from overeating grain.

I also recommend checking out the website naturalhorse dot com. Lots of articles on natural equine care and some great ones on homeopathic remedies for certain conditions.

Forget about constitutional remedy. The poor horse is sick with specific symptoms. Lets take care of the condition without trying to find out the constitutional. (later)

My impressions are with Namaste. Seems to know.

Whenever blood problems are present I tend to go with ECHINACEA and in this case 30X. Give two doses a day for 3 days then once a day for a week. Homeopathic Echinacea is great in blood conditions and treats blood poisoning. Not saying blood poisoning, saying the blood accumulation seems to be the problem as I read it.

In this case, I recommend more than one remedy together. Horses are delicate creatures and need much attention now, not later.

Busy night with my herd so I was incomplete with my postings. Sabra is right, you need to take care of the immediate problems first.

Thank you very much for all the information!

I agree that she needs something now to alleviate the current blood accumulation in the hooves, then the constitutional work. I will get the Echinacea 30x and go from there.

Thank you again for the help and I will post back.

This has been very helpful for me as I now have two lame mares from laminitis and/or founder.
I have a question on HOW to give remedies to a horse. Obviously, it is quite difficult to get a horse to place the pills under their tongue! :-) What I have been doing lately is placing a few pills in distilled water, succussing each time and placing a few drops on a tiny bit of flax cookie or carrot. Another option I've been using is to put a few drops in a small amount of water and let them have that, even if they don't drink it all at least they are getting it in their mouth.
I have also read where you can place the remedy in your hand and immediately give to the animal (all my horses will take directly from my hand or fingers gently). But, does this not risk diluting the effectiveness of the remedy? What do others think about administering remedies to horses/other animals out of your hand?

For all of my animals, I use a very small morter & pestle to crush the pills into a fine powder. I add a few tablespoons of water and stir with the pestle. Next I use a syringe (no needle) to administer it to the animal. I just pull open their lip and squirt it in. It's over before they even know what hit them.

I have also just dropped the pills into water (or squirted a syringe full of remedy) and have had success that way. It all depends on the situation and the animal.
