This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
I feel that if the acute problem becomes intolerable ONLY then a acute remedy in lower potency may be given but we must make sure that its relationship with the basic remedy should be complimentary. Like Belladonna is acute of PULSATILLA, Bryonia is the acute of Natrum Mur.Aconite is acute to Arsenicum Album, Chelidonium to Lycopodium & so on.

The question would be is it a true acute, or just one of their old chronic complaints returning.

A true acute would show a complete change of state - new modalities, new symptoms, sometimes even new mentals. This would require a new remedy (if it requires treatment that is).

A false acute, or a flare-up of the chronic state, might mean two things - one is that the remedy given is correct and it should be pursued. The second is that the first remedy was not exactly right and the symptoms are showing you what the correct remedy should have been. This would depend on exactly what symptoms and modalities are being displayed. Do they still fit into the remedy given or not?

Usually I find that when someone is having to take a number of 'acutes' while under chronic treatment, the remedy being used does not fit the whole case.

On the other hand, as a patient becomes healthier, they are actually more likely (for awhile) to experience true acutes, because their susceptibility has changed from being stuck in their old chronic disease which showed the same state all the time, to being reactive to the environment and displaying states appropriate to the situation.

That is a bad sign. You have developed a new symptom. This means that you are either proving a remedy, or your disease is continuing to undermine your health. New symptoms do not appear during cure.

You had best contact your homoeopath immediately.

Ask the homoeopath why she thinks a new symptom has come up. She is in charge of your treatment.
