Baby reflux - For Dr. Joe de Livera
Hi,Dr. Livera, I need your help... my daughter is 3 months old now and she has reflux. We tried homeophatic medicine for the last two weeks (Chamomilla and Silicea) because on top of the reflux she has been cranky and restless. We notice that now the reflux is worse (not sure if it is related to the medication).... sometimes she only find relief when she is holded in a vertical position and she has often her mouth with milk reflux
Facts: she has been feeding with formula (mommy does not produce enough milk), watery poop (once or twice per day) - not constipation, crying (specially during the end of the evening - put her down is very difficult, it can take 1 hour and she usually ask for a formula bottle desperetly), and waking up frequently (specially during the day).
After the homeopathic medication, she is sleeping well at night and the naps during the day last at least 40 minutes..
I came across this forum and found out that my baby's Reflux can be treated with Nat Phos 6x.
My question to you is this: Could you confirm if it is a good idea to switch to Nat Phos 6x and stop Chamomilla and Silicea. If the answer is yes, could you please confirm what is the right dose?

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
It is very likely that your baby suffers from Gastric Reflux aka GERD (Gastro Esophagal Reflux Disease)
The remedies that have proved to be very effective for Baby GERD are:
Nat Phos 6x dose half tablet dissolved in milk given immediately after a feed
Arnica 30c in the Wet dose given twice daily. Half teaspoonful is a dose.
The Wet dose of any Homeopathic remedy is made as follows:
Order the remedy in the Liquid pack in Alcohol, also referred to as Liquid Dilution in a bottle preferably with a dropper arrangement.
Get a 500ml bottle of Spring Water from the nearest supermarket.
Pour out about 3cm of water from the bottle to leave some airspace.
Insert 3 drops of the remedy into the bottle and shake the bottle hard at least 6 times before you sip a capfull of the bottle or a large teaspoonful which is the dose.
Shaking the bottle hard is homeopathic succussion and this enhances the effect of the remedy on the user.
You will STOP all other drugs prescribed for baby which as you have already seen have not done any good.
Please confirm that you burp baby immediately after each feed.
You will avoid eating all food that can cause any distress to baby.You must know that they are passed on to baby through your breast milk.
You (the mother) will take Nat Phos 6x dose 2 tablets after each of 3 meals daily and Arnica 30c in the Wet dose taken twice daily. The idea is that your milk will pass the effect to baby. You may like to know that this remedy will also help to reduce your weight by 1kg per week very safely.

Thank you very much for your advise. Could you please confim the dose as my daughter is NOT a breastfeeding baby? She is taking more or less 95% formula milk (I get it in the supermarket) and 5% from breastfeeding. That is why I am not very sure I still should take the medication instead of her....
I would like to let you know that I burp my daughter after each feeding always and her poo is watery since she was born.
I stop all other medicines that my daugther was taking and this morning (while I was waiting for your response, I bought Nat Phos 6x)....

Do let me know how she responds to Nat Phos 6x which you will give her in the manner prescribed.
It is up to you to decide whether or not to take NP. It will reduce your weight by 1 kg per WEEK and as far as I know any mother with a new baby always waits for her weight to reduce in the long term.

Please order Urtica Urens 30c to increase your milk supply and stop the other drugs you are taking.
You can also take the Arnica 30 and the Nat Phos 6x to help both you and baby and your dosage will be as follows:
Nat Phos 3 tablets taken thrice daily after each of 3 meals.
Arnica and Urtica Urens both in 30c potency to be taken in the Wet dose thrice daily leaving half hour between each.

I gave her the Nat Phox as prescribed. She vomited a lot (as never) after the evening feeding yesterday and before go to sleep she asked for her formula bottle desperetely (twice). I burped her after each feed.
In other feed (first thing this morning, around 6:00 am), in the midle of the feeding, she has reflux (not to much), but this is new for her (never happened previously in the middle of a feed).
Her deposition has increased as well. Instead of one time per day, she did it twice (as mentioned previously, her pooh is always watery).
I will continue all day long with the prescribed dose, unless I hear otherwise.
On the other hand, I am waiting for the arnica. They said I will have it in two days more.

Would you like to change the brand of your formula?
This may help baby to keep her milk down instead of continuing to spit it out.
You can also reduce her feed but give her the bottle more often to enable her digestive system to take over with the help of the Nat Phos.

Now, I am trying to feed her at least twice times when she is awake...more often as instructed, at the beginning and at the end (in order to enable her digestive systema Deposition. My daughter seems to be constipated right now (as never, ever). She was taking daily Biogaia (probiotic drops to regulate her digestive system and help her with the gasses I suspended it when we began this treatment. Could you please let me know if I can give it to her again and what else can do to avoid the constipation caused by the medication?

This is OK.
How many days was she constipated?
STOP the Biogala drops.
Please note that Nat Phos is to treat constipation. It did not CAUSE it.

I was trying to see what happened without Biogaia (as I suspended when you told me at the beginning to stop all other medicines). My daugther does not have constipation without Biogaia but it is hard for her make pooh (she has to do a lot of effort). She has bowel movement at least one time per day.
Now, we have changed her milk (lactose free) and I prepared the arnica with spring water. Today will be her first day with all the medicines that you prescribed in place. I will report progress.

I believe that baby's digestive system is slowly stabilizing and you may be able to stop the Nat Phos in a few weeks when you feel that she can do without it.
The probiotic is strictly not for babies and you can safely stop it.
You are cleared to take 9 tablets daily. You will please record your weight weekly and report the loss which should be at least 1kg per week.

reporting progress: As I changed the milk. it seems reflux is less. She only has it sometimes after feedings now. I will continue to give Nat Phos to her. However, her sleeping is getting often very irregular and now she does not want to sleep during the day. She is only taking short naps (20 to 40 min. maximum) and after that she is tired and tired. At the end of the day, she is exhausted and finally she fall sleep. Could you please let me know if I can do something with Arnica (that she is currently taking) in order to control this issue?

In my experience, babies do tend to sleep less during the daylight hours as the advance in age and do themselves and their parents the favour of sleeping for longer hours at night. I have 3 sons the eldest of whom is now 45 years old and a few grandchildren, and have observed that they all seem to conform to this sleeping pattern.
It is best that the baby ceases to be dependent on ALL remedies and of course DRUGS unless on a SOS basis, and you should be duly thankful that your baby daughter is responding in this manner after you have changed the brand of the formula.
You have not reported on your own weight loss statistics and this would be of interest if you care to share it.

Forgot to ask. Is it possible to give my daugther arnica just before the meal? I found difficult try to calculate 30 minutes before the meal (as her schedule is not fixed). If she wakes up, usually is super hungry and waiting 30 minutes is not an option. Sometimes, she drink her formula bottle before going to sleep, but as I mentioned, it is not very accurate the 30 minutes previous the meal. Please advise.

The reflux has been reduced, it is not completely gone, so I am still giving her NP after some feedings (never exceding 3 tablets per day). Usually I am giving her max. 2 tablets per day.... So, I will continue with it until sympthoms dissapear. Please confirm otherwise.
I have loss 1 kg. per week for the last two weeks using NP and Arnica.

One question. My daughter has pain related to teething rigth now but she it seems that the disconfort is terrible and she is restless. Can I use something to reduce this issue? I know that all babies go trough but it seems that for some of them is harder?

Please confirm if Nux Vomica 30C is for my daughter's teething.Do I have to do wet dose?. Or can we consider using pellets? (they are available rigth away. For the wet doses, I have to order them and it will take some days).

Nux Vomica will help baby with his Reflux as it seems to reinforce the action of Nat Phos 6x.
I do not think that his problems with teething are serious enough to warrant treatment as it is not impossible that it could interfere with the reflux therapy which is now under control.
You may use 1 pellet in 25ml water to make the Wet dose and you will use just half teaspoonful once daily for a dose and report his response in 3 days after you start on the Nux V.
