3 Month old - Severe Eczema, Please Help!!!

Hi,

I have a 3 month old. She has got severe eczema. there are bumps on her cheeks and scalp which weep and then get yellow crust and her cheeks are inflamed and bright red.

skin everywhere else was just not smooth to touch but now its getting really coarse and thick and rough and becoming dark colored, kind of blackened esp. both her legs (til knee) and her arms.

She is scratching a lot esp her scalp. We started giving her arsenicum alb on monday and itching has reduced I'd about 50%.

I came to know about side effects of steroids cream and stopped using it about 3 weeks ago. I have been trying homeopathy since then but her condition is not improving, rather it's getting worse and I am really sad and worried now.

Her homeopath had given graphites 30c 1 dose then asked us to wait & see. Symptoms got worse but we were not sure whether it was aggravation or the effect of withsrawl of Hydrocrtisone cream.

Then after 2 weeks we gave her 1 dose of calc carb 200c a week ago on Sept 8th. On 13th sept It seemed like that condition on her face improved by 50% but again from that evening it's all back.

Skin on her leg is getting really course and thick. Same with her cheeks, but skin is not as thick as the skin on the leg.

I am just too concerned and wanted to hear more opinions.
I'd really appreciate your help.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
One dose of Bacillinum 200 has been known to clear the condition as if by magic.

Stop all other drugs and remedies for a few days before using this remedy and report response.

You may also change the formula if possible unless you are breast feeding her, as this can be the causative factor.

Joe De Livera last decade
I am breast feeding her but supplement with formula sometimes (once a day or maybe once in two days).

On advise of my homeopath I am now giving her Soy formula for last 2 weeks whenever I supplement.

I haven't heard of Bacillinum for eczema. Can it be given to anybody? does her history, personality etc. matter?

I have heard of the graphites and calcarb working for eczema, don't know why they didn't work for my daughter. Calcarb actually worked for me when I was 3 month old and my eczema never came back.

Thanks Joe for your response, I really appreciate this.

Also wanted to mention/emphasize that 5th day after giving the calc carb 200 (one time) she seemed better for about half a day and after that it;s getting worse (coarse, thicking of skin).

Also her eczema "seems" better from morning to evening then seems start getting worse(inflamed red and itchy on cheeks, forehead and scalp) again in the evening and very itchy and weepy during the night.

I just want to make sure that you have all the details and just just being careful as baby is just 3 months old and it has already been painful for her.

Hi
I am sorry to hear about your baby.

I have a 9 months baby with eczema as well. He had it since he was 3 months old. Just this week I went to a homeopath (I did not know that they could help before recently). The homeopath said at the appointment that she would send me calc carb. I hope to god it will help.

Have you had him tested for allergies? Normally it is down to milk and egg. If allergic to milk, like my son is, it is the protein that is the problem. When I was breastfeeding I stopped dairy products. At 8 months old I found Nutramigen, which is a formula for babies allergic to milk and soya protein. Please get off dairy products while breasfeeding and get him tested (bloodtest) for milk and egg allergy. Since my son started with the Nutramigen formula, his ezcema got better but didn't disappear. (GP can prescribe that formula, it is quite expensive). Unfortunately, he is allergic to more products. He is having more tests in October.

lindabarrio last decade
I thought child has to be 1 yr old to be allergy tested.

I stopped dairy products for few weeks but it did not help at all so I started back again. I give soy formula whenever I need to supplement.

new_mom_sd last decade
I had my baby tested in Sweden. They only took a small bloodtest for milk, egg, pies, and fish.

I am returning to Sweden for more tests in October.

Finally, I have also got an appointment at the hospital in London in October. I had to persuade my GP to refer me to the hospital. She finally did.

I know that my baby is intolerant to other foods but don't really know what. I think tomato, citrus fruits and carrot. I am really careful about what I give him. I also think he is sensitive to certain materials. For example, every time I put him in his maclaren pushcahir he starts rubbing his hands and scratching his face (obviously I now stopped using it).

I am also a mum who has experiance of eczema- 2 of my own born with it.

I agree that the baby should have a blood test (the expensive one, literally no pain ask dr)

tell me about your childs personality character what they like, dislike. what makes eczema worse better.etc.

I will start with the time of birth. I did not have any unusual problem during preg.

During labor, I was given pitocin but then baby's heart rate was dropping so they stopped pitocine then started again after few hours and during pushing, her heart rate was dropping a lot so then the dr used forceps to bring the baby out.

I breastfed my baby and second day she wouldn't stop crying so we decide to give formula and she had about 1.5 oz then she stopped crying so apparantly she was hungry. I supplement her sometimes maybe once a day or once in 2 days. I try to avoid supplementing now and I give soy formula if I need to.

She wakes up in the morning happy, smiling and wants to play. She is very active and responds to our voice and action, keeps looking around even when she is crying. Her sleep pattern during the day varies but generally she take 2-3 naps which are about an hour long. She wants to be held a lot, doesn't stay on floor or bed for longer than 20 min. She doesn't play by herself for more than 10 min. She needs somebody to play with her and talk to her then she is happy and "talks" back a lot.

In her scalp/head and face -
Her Eczema seems beeter in the first half of the day and then starts getting red and inflamed as the night approaches being really worse between 12:00 midnight and 5:00 am. It's really weepy and itchy, when I pick her up I can feel the liquid from her scalp and cheeks on my hand. then it crusts first yellow then white flakes.
It also seems better after bathing her and then putting moisturizer on.

On her trunk, legs and arm -

thick, rough patches seems like burned skin, feels like allegator skin on her legs and now arm, some also starting on her trunk now.

I am not sure I mentioned this or not - I was using burt's bees appricot baby oil for her massage and Today I have started using Olive oil thinking that Olive oil would be more moisturizing. I bath her with just water and use "california baby wash" once a week and have now reduced to once in 2 weeks. After bathing I appy Eucerine cream on her.

Hope this is not too long.

new_mom_sd last decade
Forgot to mention that She seemed cogested a little bit in both nostrils normally when she wakes up in the morning which clears up after bath but sometime I have to use saline solution.
Also her palms and feet get cold really easily and fast.

I note that you are reluctant to use the Bacillinum 200 (1 dose) that I prescribed.

I would suggest that you meet a qualified homeopath and discuss your baby's case with him. However before you use any remedy that he prescribes, please refer it to me and others on this forum like Erika who have more experience that me especially with babies.

I am copying 2 posts where Bacillinum helped to cure a baby's eczema which was chronic for which Erika had prescribed:

Re: Bac200 for two year old From Joe De Livera on 2005-09-11
Jules,

I am so happy that your little girl had a "Miracle Cure" of her eczema overnight with the Bacillinum 200. I presume that you gave her just one dose.

They say that one lives to learn, and I am indeed grateful to Erika who first put me wise about Bacillinum 200 for Eczema and to you for having confirmed that it worked. Erika has so much more experience than me that she has the advantage over me in the use of remedies. In my case I am not a professional homeopath as it is only my hobby which I use to help anyone who comes to me for help.

I feel that Erika will be best able to reply the question in your last para and shall await her reply.

Re: Bac200 for two year old From erika on 2005-09-11
I am so glad the bacillinum worked as you describe - I have truly found it of great use in eczema too.
Joe, I am not more experienced than you - your experience and love of homeopathy always inspires me! My experience only comes from what has been the blessing for me to meet on my path of learning, which I am sure is the same for you?!

As for the prescribing mode of homeopaths - this is an area which is really difficult to answer. Personally, I prescribe differently for each individual and try to match the energy of the potency to the energy of the patient. The frequency of repetition is also individual - for example a patient on regular medication (chemo, painkillers, HRT etc) usually needs the remedy repeated more frequently. Also, if a child has had a lot of steroids for eczema a daily repitition of low potency for a number of days may benefit more than one dose - whereas a child who has been free of former medication may only need one dose of a remedy. There are also certain patients who are so sensitive that they only need to sniff the remedy for one dose! It is variable, remarkable and totally individual............I hope this makes sense?

Is the liquid that oozes out sticky, honey like?
If it is so, graphite is the remedy. You have only once given one dose of graphite which caused aggravation, about which you are not sure whether it was due to stoppage of steroidal cream or graphite. Obviously graphite has not been tried without doubt.

You had similar eczema when you were the same age and you were cured by calcarea carb. This time you tried Cal Carb on your baby, there was 50% improvement and after sometime, the whole thing came back to square one. You did not repeat the dose(in homeopathy it is advised that the second dose is given when the improvement shown by the first dose has stated wearing off) and therefore, honestly speaking, neither graphite nor cal carb has been given a fair deal.
If the oozed liquid is not honey -like, it would be prudent to try cal carb. In that case please give 30 potency and not 200.

As a general rule, potencies above 30 are not given as a starting potency to infants and old people, whose body resistance is low.

If the baby benifits by graphite,it should not be a surprise, just because it is your baby- the two systems need not be identical.

Joe,

I was hesitant to give Bacillinum 200 since she is too small and I hadn't posted about her personality yet and I thought that things about her personality/behaviour may have an effect on what remedy is suggested.

I hope Erika sees this thread and gives her insight on this case because I couldn't find her contact info to bring this case to her attention. My baby is really suffering.

As you suggested I discussed the possibility of Bacillinum 200 with my daughter's homeopath and she said that she has used it for diaper rashes before but not for eczema. She said that she would try it but before that she wanted to try mezereum 30c based on my daughter's symptoms.

Mr. Sahai,

Thanks for your response. I just wanted to bring few things to your attention -

Liquid is sticky, gooey which turns to yellow crust kind of like opaque glass beads.

*After giving the graphite we were not sure whether the worsening was because of hydrocortisone withdrawl or it was an aggravation caused by graphite so we waited for 2 weeks and it didn't get better so it couldn't have been an aggravation.
* then we gave calc Carb and please note that the 50% imrovement was only on the face and from noon to 4pm and everywhere else it was the same. And her condition seem better during those hours anyways. We waited for a week after giving calc carb before looking into different option.

I appreciate everybody's suggestion on this.

It is obvious that you have to make up your mind as to which remedy should be used for your baby. It occurs to me that it is only you that we have
considered so far about this decision. What does your husband think as a solution to this problem as it is, I believe, as much his as it is yours especially since it concerns the future of your baby.

I have given you chapter and verse about Bacillinum and I can see that you and your homeopath are not impressed with it in spite of the fact that with just one does another baby's eczema was helped.

A remedy that I have used many times is Arnica 6c in the Wet Dose and I would recommend it to you for immediate use. You will no doubt appreciate that delay on your part in using any one of the remedies that we have suggested to you is only making your baby to suffer unnecessarily and it is in your hands to stop all drugs and other remedies that you have used and to use one that has been proved to help.

Joe De Livera last decade
Joe,

I am not giving any remedies to my child on my own, it's the homeopath who I am consulting is prescribing.

Had it been for myself I would have stopped all other remedy and taken what you have prescribed but since this is about a young baby (& you also suggested to discuss with homepath) I discussed it with the homeopath. If something goes wrong after giving a remedy I can call her anytime and have somebody to talk to immediately who can tell me either an antidote or maybe tell me that whatever is happening to the baby, is expected or normal. But if I give her remedy on my own than I have no knoledgable person to help me right away. Of course I would have you all but what if none of you are able to see the post for a day because of time difference in your country and mine or simply because you are busy that day.

I am not an homeopath by profession or even by hobby. My knoledge of homeopathy is limited to believing that homeopathy WORKS
and also my experience of getting the homeopathy medicine (from a homeopath) most of my childhood and knowing a liitle about how remedies are taken and that they can aggravate symtoms before improvement. I think other people who post on this forum are knowledgable maybe only by hobby but seems like they are so you assumed that I am the one who is treating my child and not able to make up my mind.

BTW I am *very impressed* with the way Bacillinum worked in that other case and I do want to give it to my daughter right away. As I wrote in earlier post that I talked to my homeopath about Bac 200 and she is mailing it to me. I do intend to emphasize that more to my homeopath and request that we try Bacillinum when I receive it before trying anything else.

Please refer to my last posting.

I realised later that, while stating that in general the starting potency for infants and old people are kept low, I was having Cal Carb in mind and not Baccilinum because I was commenting on what has already been tried. I forgot to mention that there are certain medicines eg. Baccilinum which are safe only in potencies not below 30, better above 30.

Sorry , if it has created any misunderstanding.

My daughter is also battling this with her 6 month old and has been since he was 3 months old. She tried getting off wheat, dairy, eggs (she doesn't eat meat)and still nothing helped. She tried health food store creams and his little cheeks got bleeding so bad she had to relunctantly resort to the cortisone cream about 2 weeks ago. Every 2 days she has to put in on because he flares up.

I'm very interested in this Bacillinum. When you say 1 dose are you talking about one tablet or four tablets?

Thanks, Denise

Bacillinum 200 (1 dose) that I prescribed.

My post was an iquiry into the dosage as I wasn't clear on that for sure. It's not been very long since my post and I'm waiting on a response. I would also have to order the product. So it may be awhile.

Yesterday I was told by an online friend that the tap water with chlorine it in could be causing the Eczema. She said when they started using well water for their child the condition cleared up completely!

So we are in meantime going to wash him, all his clothes, bed sheets, etc. in bottled water till we can get a proper water softener for the whole whole that will take out the chlorine. If it's not causing it I'm sure it aggravating it. It's not only on his cheeks but his whole body, just worse there.

Will let the group know how things go as they develop.
Thanks for checking!

I have also tried eliminating dairy and wheat from my diet for 15 days but it hasn't helped.

I havent tried Bacillinum yet, my baby's condition improved after mezereum but it has gone back now.

You have not got the reply regarding dose because Joe de Livera must be very busy. Any way, since you are impatient, I can tell you from my experience that for a 3 months old infant 1 globule/pilule would suffice.

Chlorine is mixed with water in the water-works to kill bacteria etc. Water softner may or may not remove chlorine depending upon design. But why go that far? The best way to remove chlorine is to boil the water. Dissolved chlorine in water will get vaporised and go away.

Do not waste bottled water for washing clothes etc. If too much money is itching you, give some to me! When the clothes dry, the chlorine will just go away as vapour to the atmosphere. All that you have to see is that you do not use wet clothes.

sahai last decade
Thanks for your reply however I'm not impatient. I was simply explaining to the person in the previous post why I hadn't used it yet. My response was:

>>It's not been very long since my post and I'm waiting on a response.>>

I didn't mean to imply I was complaining or impatient. I own a business and I know how busy one can get. I'm hoping you misunderstood my response.

Thanks again!

I note that you have not started on the Bacillinum so far for your baby.

If you hesitate to use it and would like to use a therapy which has invariably worked for adults, you can use Arnica 6c in the Wet Dose which is made up as follows:

Get a 500ml bottle of spring water
Pour out 100ml
Put in 3 globules or 1 drop if you have the liquid remedy.
Hit the bottle hard on your palm or a cushion and watch for the water to fizzle like when you open a bottle of soda.
Let your baby sip a teaspoonful as recommended above.

Report response in 2 days.

You may use the cream that you are now using and as soon as you notice some improvement stop using the cream and go with the Arnica therapy.

Joe De Livera last decade
Since you are waiting for Bacillinum, I can take the liberty to tell you that it is high time that you start Graphite and do not prolong the suffering. I have enough experience about this remedy. The oozing should be honey-like and sticky. Good luck!

Is there itching? Does she have more itch when warm in bed or wrapped up? Does she cry after scratching herself? Is she on mother's milk? At what month did it start? Have the parents been prone to skin affliction? If so what type? Where do you live, to give me an idea of the temperature conditions? Can you describe roughness of the skin?
