dry, hacking cough in 4 year old
My son has had a dry hacking cough for the last 24 hours. He has no wheezing, it's dry, hacking, sometimes choking cough. It's constant now as has been for about 5-6 hours. He is worse for lying down, movement but still has it while he is still. Nothing improves the cough except temporarily drinking liquids and shortly resumes coughing. He is thin, brown skinned, clingy, likes to be around people, wants sympathy and doesn't like to sit still for anything! He has real slight runny nose but nothing major. Expectorate only when he sneezes which is minimal and it is thin and watery. Cough won't stop - please help!erika1 on 2005-12-20

One more thing, last remedy he had was Sulphur30c for the runny nose, discharge and allergies that he had over 24 hours ago was last dosage. Other symptoms have basicly subsided except this coughing has been exacerbated for some reason. Thanks.

I think that we made a discovery. My son may have swallowed/injested pieces of styrofoam because we were cleaning his bed and found a million little styrofoam pieces under his pillow, all over bed, etc. I know that this stuff is toxic.
Should we give him ipecac? Now we are wondering if we should take him to emergency? He's been coughing it seems like for the last 12 hours. We are not really sure what is going on with him and the stores are closed here until the morning. I can't even get any conium until 11 hours from now. Please advise.

IN this case, i will advise you to take him to hospital and make a complete checkup.

I gave my son the conium and it cleared up the cough in several days. The cough then turned from dry to a productive cough. He had rattling in his chest and it was a chesty cough, so I administered Ant Tart. It all cleared up within a week.
The styrofoam was never found or confirmed as the cause or culprit. Thank you so much for your assistance.

In a similar case my son who is 3 1/2 years old who has a continuous cough since 12 hrs .
Wanted to know how many doses of Conium M resolved the cough or was it only one dose ?...
How many doses of ANTIM TART and what strength? Was it also 30c?
Would really help if you could let me know ....

In homeopathy a remedy is selected on the basis of symtoms and it also changes for the same person if his symptoms change. You may consider the following group of remedies for him.
A.
The following remedies may be considered if he prefers warm surroundings and likes being covered
1.
arsenic alb
if he prefers being covered and is restless
2.
hepar sulph
if he pefers warmth, is irritable and cough is excited whenever any part of the body gets cold or uncovered.
B.
The following if he suffers from digestive disorders
1.
antimonium tart
if there is respiratory problems coupled with digestive disorders.
2.
ipecac
cough and nausea
3.
nux vomica
cough, nausea, indigestion, also worse when gets up from sleep
C.
The following remedies may work if he prefers cold surroundings and open air
1.
pulsatilla
if generally he has a mild disposition
2.
phosphrus
if he is fearful and weak
D.
If his cough is worse after movements and he feels feverish
Bryonia should be considered
Ony one remedy should be given that seems to be indicated. It is better to give it in 30 or 200 potency. It may be given thrice or 4 times a day at a gap of 4 or 3 hours.
It is better to alterate the remedy with 1 pellet each of the following tissue salts
natrum sulph 6x
kali mur 6x
ferrum phos 6x
Once substantial relief is there, homeo remedy should be stopped and only tissue salts may be continued for few days.
