The Characteristic Symptoms

Hundreds of symptoms are recorded under most of the common remedies. A number of important symptoms are common to many remedies and symptoms like pain , fever, itching etc, are found under almost every major remedy.
As a result, while studying the symptoms for a patient, a number of remedies may seen to be similar to his symptom picture.
Whenever this happens, a remedy that is most similar should be selected. To facilitate this process the symptoms are again classified into:
A-- Characteristic or leading symptoms
B-- Common symptoms
Pain in the back, constipation, frequency of stools etc, are common symptoms, and when thay are modified by certain factors thay are classified as characterstic symptoms.
Examples:
COMMON SYMPTOMS
1- Pain in the back
2- pain in the leg
3- Increased frequency of stools
4- Continued high fever
CHARACTERSTIC SYMPTOMS
1- Pain in the back ameliorated by motion
2- Pain in the leg aggravated while lying down
3- Stools frequent, large, watery and greenish
4- Continued high fever- shoots up at 4 pm, and drops apperctably after 8 pm.

I think this will be helpful to select the best matching remedy to the symptoms of the patients.
