Potency - how important?

Hi All,

In my quest to learn more about homeopathy, I have found conflicting views on whether potency is important.

Would you mind sharing your views? Do you believe any potency of the 'correct' remedy will work? Or is it the case that an incorrectly selected potency will result in even the perfect remedy failing?

Thanks!

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Potency selection.

There are two school of thought regarding potency selection.
1 User of high potency 200c and above.
2User of low potency,like mother tincture,3x,6c etc
.
Hahnemann in his life time used mostly 30c and very rarely 200c,in his last days of life.

Ther is no such definite rule for the selection of potency but under certain conditions and certain circumstances different potencies are used.

1.If the selected remedy is very much simillar, high potency is used.
2.If there is doubt in perfect similarity, low potency is used.
3.If the remedy is selected on mental symptoms, high potency is used.
4.If the remedy is selected as an organ remedy, low potency is used.
5.If the disease is functional, medium potency like 30c,is used.
6.If the disease is of chronic nature, usually 6c and then go higher.
7.If the remedy is selected on pathological basis, low potency is used.
8.If the vitality of patient is low,low potency is used.
8.In the advance stages of disease, when only palliation is required, low potency is used.
9.When vital organs are involved as heart, low or middle potencies are used.
10.If the patient is over senstive, low potency is used.
11.In childrens diseases high potencies are used.
12.If the patient is on non homeopathic medicines and it is necessary not to abandoned them immediately.low potencies are used.
13.If you want to hide the remedy, high potency is used.
14.As a tonic low potencies are used.
15.As a prophylactic high potencies are used.
16.Medicines of vegetable kingdom, are used in low and middle potencies.
17.Nosodes,sarcodes,minerals,metals are all used in in high potencies.
18.Short acting remedies are used in low potencies.
19.Deep acting remedies are used in high potencies.
20.People who dont believe in homeopathy must be given low potencies.
21.To avoid aggravation, low potencies are used.
22.If the medicine is well indicated and it stop working after some time, usually next high potency is given, that is why there as a long range of potencies.
For external use, tincture and low potencies are used.
24.When repetion of remedy is required as in emergency, low potencies are used.
25.Low potencies acts on organs, systems while high potencies acts on vital force as homeopath believe.

Great list, sajjad! (Especially #20, HAHA!)

I have also seen listings of a limited number of remedies where the remedy's action is different, sometimes even opposite, depending on the potency. For those remedies it would certainly matter.

A great guidline.

I copy into my record book and try to follow this.

The Materia Medica recommends, almost in all cases lower potency, very rearly higher potency recommended. Dr. Clark also the same, recommends 3X or 3C.

JMalik, I think there have been threads at www.hpathy.com that listed some of the discrepancies in potencies for particular remedies, so you might try searching there.

Hepar Sulph comes to mind. My understanding is that the correct potency depends on whether the abscess is actively discharging (that might be an example of an opposite effect).
