On closing the eyes but lightly, they are often spasmodically closed with pain.

if he tries to open his eyes in the night, they pain him as if they were oppressed with a sudden flood of bright sunlight, even in darkness.

they become again drawn together.

these symptoms are accompanied by little sleep, and by frequent twitching during the day in the right upper eyelid,.

Gnawing pain in one of the front molar teeth of the lower jaw, with tearing behind the ear, as if the ear would be torn out.

worse at nine o'clock in the evening, and then slowly decreasing.

sitting up in the bed gives a little relief.

after midnight there is only gnawing in the tooth.

the pain remains the same under all circumstances.

in daytime it is dull,.

After dinner, much distension, with tenesmus.

this was afterwards succeeded by the passage of two hard balls of faeces.

afterwards she went to walk, during which the distension of the abdomen continued in spite of the copious emissions of flatulence.

no relief was obtained till a copious evacuation occurred after her walk (ninth day),.

After dinner, violent attacks of colic, the whole afternoon.

short sleep relieves. as soon as he moves, it seems as if they would return, with violent tenesmus and occasional expulsion of faeces.

this lasts until evening.

the anus feels sore, with stinging, so that he cannot sit down without pain.

on the following day, liquid mucus frequently passes off by the rectum, involuntarily (after fourteen days),.

Colic, followed by diarrhoea, this was succeeded by a violent pain in the abdomen, at the place where, when a girl, she had an internal ulcer, which opened.

the pain was like that felt after a violent blow.

she had to rub the place and lay the hand upon it, whilst the body was bent.

this relieved the pain somewhat, but it lasted uniformly the whole day, either sitting or standing (seventeenth day),.

Acrid leucorrhoea, with burning in the genital organs, and still more in the rectum.

these parts seemed inflamed and corroded, so that she found walking difficult.

washing with cold water relieved.

the leucorrhoea was abundant, and flowed almost over her feet.

at the same time blood, resembling meat washings, passed for two days.

A very general condition corresponding to Alumina is Dryness of mucous membranes and skin, and Tendency to paretic muscular states. Old people, with lack of vital heat, or prematurely old, with debility. Sluggish functions, heaviness, numbness, and staggering, and the characteristic constipation find an excellent remedy in Alumina. Disposition to colds in the head, and eructations in spare, dry, thin subjects. Delicate children, products of artificial baby foods.

Like its relative Alumen ^Alumen, Alumina produces irritation of mucous membranes with dryness or extreme secretion and paralysis of involuntary muscles, as those of the rectum and of the nervous and muscular systems generally.

Alumina paralyses the bowels in the same way as lead, to which it is an antidote.

Even small and soft stools are passed with great difficulty.

Pregnant women and children are liable to this kind of constipation.

A very prominent characteristic is that a person must strain at stool in order to urinate.

Teste groups Alumina with Sepia ^Sepia and Copaiva.

He considers it the chronic of Sepia ^Sepia as Silica Marina ^Silic. is of Pulsatilla ^Puls.

Paralysis of the internal rectus muscle of the eye, causing squint.

Also ptosis. Drawing, pains appear in the limbs; a sensation of constriction in several organs.

Several painful symptoms show themselves after the midday meal, and continue till evening, when they disappear or are replaced by others which begin only then.

On the other hand the pains which appear in the morning or in the evening are abated after eating.

Trembling, convulsive movements of the limbs and head; spasms, with tears and laughter alternately.

There is exaltation of the whole nervous system.

Trembling of the whole body with desire to lie down, which, however, agg. the fatigue.

Great general fatigue, even after a short walk, but chiefly after speaking.

Frequent stretching while sitting.

The nates go to sleep while sitting.

Drags legs (especially left).

Many of the symptoms of locomotor ataxy are reproduced by Alumina, and it is one of the most useful remedies in that disease.

Boenninghausen cured a case with Aluminium.

Sluggishness of action is characteristic of this medicine.

urine is slow in passing.

great straining to pass even a soft stool.

can only evacuate bowels when standing.

has to strain as if abdomen and rectum were paralysed. (Causticum ^Caust. has defecation only when standing; but the straining is less.) Sensations are slow in being transmitted to the centres.

In the mental sphere there is confusion. "When he says anything he feels as if another person had said it, and when he sees anything, as if another person had seen it, or as if he could transfer himself into another, and only then could see." A feeling of hurry follows, things do not move fast enough.

Impulses. Suicidal tendency, a sudden impulse from seeing blood on a knife.

Sad; apprehensive; wants to getaway; fears going crazy.

Mental symptoms mostly come on in the morning on waking.

Vertigo on closing eyes.

Catarrh is a very general feature.

Catarrh with dryness of mucous membranes.

The throat looks parched and glazed.

The nose is stopped, feels dry, and the point of it is cracked.

Alm. has the fish-bone sensation in the throat on swallowing.

There is profuse leucorrhoea running down to the heels, sometimes excoriating.

As with the mucous membrane so with the skin itching eruptions agg. from warmth of bed.

Eruptions of all kinds, indurations, ulcers.

Granular eyelids. Hairs fall out all over body.

The skin of the face feels as if covered with dried white of egg, or as if a cobweb was on it.

Fissures. Alumina has some curious symptoms in the digestive sphere.

There is a craving for dry rice and dry food.

It has agg. from starch, especially the starch of potatoes. agg.

From salt, wine, vinegar, spirits.

Burning pains in the back are very characteristic, and especially a sensation as if a hot iron were forced through the lower vertebrae.

There are pulsations in various parts.

The pains go upward. Upper left; lower right affected (opposite of Lycopodium ^Lyc.).

The symptoms are agg. on alternate days; periodically.

Guernsey describes a characteristic periodicity thus "Patient gets along nicely for a time, then, from no apparent cause, gets worse for a time, then better, and soon a relapse may be worse than the original illness, another relapse not so bad, and so on with longer intervals between." In afternoons.

at new or full moon. agg. in the morning on waking. agg.

After coitus. agg. In cold air, out of doors; in dry weather.

They are amel. by cold washing; by moistening the part; by warm food or drink; by warmth generally.

Alumina is suited to persons of sedentary habits who suffer from chronic ailments; to constitutions with diminished animal heat.

Psoric persons. The action of Alumina is slow in developing, and the remedy must not be changed quickly.

(Oxide of aluminum.)

To secure quite pure clay, a matter of some difficulty, we may use the following process Pure muriate of lime which has been thoroughly dried by heating in a porcelain bowl is pulverized while still hot, and dissolved in as much alcohol as is required. Half an ounce of white Roman alum from Solfatara is dissolved in five parts of distilled water and to remove any adherent earth is filtered. The Sulphuricum Acidum ^{sulphuric acid} contained in its is precipitated in the form of gypsum, by dropping in the alcoholic solution of muriate of lime until the solution of alum is no longer rendered turbid thereby. The clear watery fluid on top then contains muriate of alumina, from which this earth is precipitated by means of alcoholic spirits of ammonia. It is then well washed and then thoroughly heated in order to completely remove the ammonia. The powder is then, while warm, preserved in a well-stoppered glass vial, and is pure alumina. One grain of this is then triturated in the well-known manner with thrice one hundred grains of sugar of milk. Through solution and further dilution with alcohol, it is then brought to the decillionth potency, in the manner directed at the conclusion of the first volume with respect to dry medicinal substances. Alumina has proved itself an important antipsoric. It proved itself excellent when it was otherwise homoeopathically suitable to the case, when one or several of the following states were present

I am sorry to say the significance of the use of medicines as given in the preface to most of the remedies, and which have often been unreliably reported, has been now and then misunderstood, having been regarded as determining the choice of remedies in the treatment of diseases (as ); this they cannot and should not be.

they are not names of diseases healed, but only of separate symptoms which, in treating a disease with the specified medicine, were either diminished or removed . To use them otherwise is a deceptive procedure which we leave now as before to our allopathic step-brothers. They are, on the contrary, only to serve to furnish occasionally a little confirmation of the correct choice of the homoeopathic remedy, already found out from their pure peculiar medicinal effects, as according to the similarity of the symptoms of disease of the special case under consideration.

paronychia. at night the legs go to sleep, are stiff and numb.

painful weariness of the articulations of the feet while sitting.

cold feet. burning sensation in the toes.

twitching and trembling in the limbs.

frequent stretching and extension of the limbs while sitting.

disagreeable lack of vital warmth.

ill effects of vexation.

falling asleep late. the sleep is too light.

dreamy sleep. stupor, unrefreshing sleep.

chilliness in the evening.

fever and ague, the chills appearing immediately after the warm soup at dinner-time. According to , Bryonia ^Bryonia is an antidote to the excessive fever-effects of alumina. Others mention Chamomilla ^Chamomilla and Ipecacuanha ^Ipecacuanha as antidotes.

But it is hardly to be excused that the Homoeopathic public should be expected to give absolute credit to an unknown person designated merely with the two letters N-g in this most important and serious work which requires circumspection, acuteness of the senses, subtle gift of observation and strict criticism of one's own sensations and perceptions, as well as a correct choice of expression, in prosecuting a work which is an indispensable foundation of our healing art.

The pathogenesis of Alumina resembles that of Agaricus Muscarius ^Agaricus, in appearing for the first time in the second edition, but being made up almost entirely of already published provings. Hahnemann's own symptoms may be included in this description.

for Hering writes ( sub voce) Hahnemann had proved the pure earth when Hartlaub and Trinks edited a collection of 975 symptoms, obtained from four provers," -the Hartlaub, Ng., SchréTerebinthina ^ter and Trinks of the above list- "in their in 1829. The year after, Hahnemann published his own observations in Stapf's Archiv.

viz. 215 symptoms obtained from a much better preparation. Hartlaub simply purified his preparation by washing it, which never can suffice but Hahnemann subjected his to a red heat." No information is given as to the subjects and doses of his provings (it provings they were).

but with Hartlaub and Trinks the 1st trituration and 9th dilution were employed. Of the source of Bute's symptoms we have no information.

Alumina note of Hahnemann had led to a good deal of mistrust of the symptoms of the anonymous observer in question, which has been increased by their excessive number. Dr. Roth having counted more than eleven thousand in the several contributions to our Materia Medica made by him between 1828 and 1836. The same critic also says, that he has fount great sameness in his pathogenetic lists. Dr. Hering, however (Allen's Encyclopaedia III, 640) had explained why "Ng." -the surgeon Cajatan Nenning- had to keep his name concealed.

and has shown that his symptoms were obtained by genuine provings on healthy subjects. Nenning himself has given in the for 1839 a similar account to explain the copiousness of his symptom lists. "A number of persons in part related to me and in part friendly (they were millinery pupils of his wife's) were gathered together by me, and in consideration of board and payment, made experiments. Along with them were also my two daughters.

and with complete reliance on the honesty of them all, I gave one medicine to one and another to another, writing down all that they reported. It was as matter of conscience on my part not to omit the smallest particular, and that thereby frequent repetitions have arisen, I grant readily, but I thought that just in that way the sphere of action of the medicine could be best recognized."

ALUMINA.

When he has lightly closed his eyes in bed, they often contract spasmodically and painfully with a jerk, and if he wishes to open his eyes at night, even in the dark, they ache violently, with pressive pains as if from a most bright sunlight suddenly admitted, and they contract again.

he can get but little sleep at night, and during the day there is frequent quivering in the right upper eyelid.;.

Gnawing pain in an anterior molar of the lower jaw with tearing behind the ear and a sensation as if it would tear it out.

worst at 9 P.M., then slowly decreasing, somewhat alleviated by sitting up in bed, and after midnight there is merely a gnawing pain in the tooth. The pain is unchanged under all circumstances, during the day it merely mutters.;.

Violent attacks of colic after dinner, during the afternoon, improved by a short nap, but soon returning, as it seemed, through motion with violent tenesmus and frequent passage of excrements until the evening, so that the anus pains with stitches as if sore, and he cannot sit down without pains.

on the following day involuntary discharge of fluid mucus from the anus (aft. 14 d.).;.

Acrid leucorrhoea with burning in the genital organs and still more in the rectum.

these parts were, inflamed and excoriated so that she found walking difficult, relieved by washing with cold water.

the leucorrhoea was frequent and almost flowed over her feet.

at the same time appeared blood like bloody water 3 days after the catamenia had ceased (22d d.).;.

Alumen ^Alumen and Alumina Alumina comes in very nicely after Alumen ^Alumen, which has much Alumina in its nature and depends largely upon Alumina, which is its base, for its way of working.

It occurs to me to throw out a little hint. When you have a good substantial proving of an oxide or a carbonate, and the mental symptoms are well brought out, you can use these, in a measure in a presumptive way, in prescribing another salt, with the same base, which has a few mental symptoms in its proving.

For instance, you have a group of symptoms decidedly relating to Alumen ^Alumen

The mental symptoms of Alumen ^Alumen, however, have not been brought out to any extent, but still you have the mental symptoms of the base of Alumen ^Alumen, which is the oxide, so that if the patient has the mental symptoms of Alumina and the physical symptoms of Alumen ^Alumen, you can rationally presume that Alumen ^Alumen will cure because of the Aluminum in each.

There is a state of weakness of the muscles supplied by these nerves.

weakness over the whole body. There is difficulty in swallowing, a paralytic condition of the oesophagus.

difficulty in raising or moving the arms.

paralysis of one side of the body, or paralysis of the muscles of the lower extremities, or of the bladder and rectum.

The paralytic state begins as a sort of a semi - paralysis, for a long time merely an inactivity, which grows at length into a complete paralytic condition. Everything is slowed down.

The conductivity of the nerves is impaired so that a prick of a pin upon the extremities is not felt until a second or so afterwards. All of his senses are impaired in this way until it really means a benumbing of the consciousness and appears to be a kind of stupefaction of his intellect, a mental sluggishness. Impressions reach his mind with a marked degree of slowness.

You will see that Alumina corresponds to a constitution that may be called psoric-old, broken-down, feeble constitutions, scrofulous constitutions, such as are inclined to tubercles and catarrhal affections.

The catarrhal tendency of Alumina is marked. Catarrhs are found wherever mucous membranes exist. Alumina affects the skin and mucous membrane extensively, i. e., the external and internal skin, the surfaces of the body.

Its greatest usefulness is as a remedy for taking cold.

In this respect it is like Silicea ^Sil., Graphites ^Graph. and Sulphur ^Sulfur It effects tissue changes, and it does this slowly, for it is a slow-acting medicine.

While the patient himself with these deep seated psoric affections feels better generally after the remedy, it will be months before his symptoms go away.

He may say "I feel better, but my symptoms all appear to be here. I can eat better and sleep better."

Then it would be unwise to change the remedy. You need not expect to get immediate relief of the catarrhs and pains in the back and other symptoms for which you gave Alumina.

You may be satisfied if you get the results after many weeks. You will find the same thing in the paralytic weakness produced by Plumbum Metallicum ^Plumbum.

Vomiting of food, mucus or bile. Nausea, vertigo, heartburn, much flatulence. Vomits mucus and water. Stomach is distended with gas. The liver is full. of suffering. Both hypochondria are full of misery, but especially the right.

The remedy, Alumina, has cured many of these old cases. Threatening chronic catarrh. The mucous membrane everywhere is in a congested state and is weak.

Inactivity of the rectum; even the soft stool requires great straining.

Anaemia in women, who are hungry for starch, chalk, rags, Carbo Veg ^charcoal, cloves and other ridiculous unnatural; things; potatoes disagree, profuse leucorrhoea.

Great heaviness in lower limbs, weak, has to sit down; numbness of heels; sense of hot iron thrust through back.

The chief characteristic leading to the use or Alumina is found in its peculiar constipation. "Inactivity of the rectum, even the soft stool requires great straining." Like Bryonia ^Bryonia, there is no desire for stool and the constipation seems to depend upon dryness of the mucous follicles. Again it is adapted to dry, spare subjects. There are other points of resemblance between these two remedies and they complement each other well. There are both excellent in infantile constipation, which is often a very obstinate affection to treat. Anacardium Occidentale ^Anacardium, Sepia ^Sepia, Silicea ^Silicea and Veratrum Album ^Veratrum album are nearest of kin in this lack of expulsive power in the rectum.

Alumina has also a sensation of constriction in the throat and oesophagus. It hurts to swallow. Alumina is recommended for the following symptoms, which often appear in locomotor ataxia "Great heaviness in the lower limbs.
