all day long they are covered with soda suspended in the atmosphere in the form of a fine powder.

it is chiefly among them that keratitis with ulceration occurs.

the ulcerative keratitis is always large and deep, and as often precedes as follows the other symptoms,.

A violent boring-burrowing toothache in a hollow tooth woke him at 4 A.M., aggravated by touch of the tongue, ceasing after half an hour, when he fell asleep.

it returned after breakfast, when he ate honey, also after eating sweets at dinner, and lasting very violent till 4 P.M., and then less till 7 P.M.

during this time he was in the open air, in cold, rainy weather.

the pain ceased during supper.

mesmerizing and smoking tobacco afforded no relief (twenty-sixth day),.

for five days (after eleven days),.

Rawness in the chest all day, worse in the evening, together with pressure beneath the sternum and oppression, and at times palpitation.

while eating the rawness disappeared, but soon returned, and at last a dry cough appeared, that gradually aggravated the scraping and sensation of rawness.

but after some mucus was loosened, the chest was relieved for a short time.

this was associated with thirst, some chilliness, fluent coryza, and a frequent, tense, hard pulse (twenty-first day),.

Violent raw sensation in the chest, after dinner, will ill-humor, and pressure in the pit of the stomach.

after the midday nap he felt better, and so long as he was lying down the scraping in the throat was very much relieved.

after rising it returned, and he was obliged with great exertion to hawk up some pieces of green tenacious mucus (twenty-second day),.

At first, suffocative dyspnoea, with a hoarse deep sound to the voice, and scraping in the pharynx and trachea, followed by cough, short during the day, fatiguing at night, rough and hollow, with sore pain at first in the chest and trachea, and a throbbing rush of blood to the vertex, with a whizzing and rattling on breathing.

relieved by sitting upright, afterwards with purulent bloody expectoration,.

Painful contraction about the stomach in the evening, extending afterwards also to both hypochondria, so that she was obliged to bend up.

relieved by stretching up and by walking, aggravated by stooping and sitting.

in the evening lasting in bed till the next morning, though less severe, together with a jerking in the right side, below the stomach, as if a worm were turning about (tenth day),.

The morning stool was harder than usual, especially very hard at first, so that he was obliged to make a great effort.

after dinner he was again obliged to go to stool, but the evacuation was insignificant, and soon followed by tenesmus in the rectum, that lasted some time (third day).

violent pressure and urging to stool.

but only a little discharge resulted, with a feeling as if much remained.

the burning about he eyes returned, with heat of the head and perspiration on the forehead, during the approach of a storm (tenth day),.

Hard stool, with burning in the anus (eleventh day).

very hard crumbly stool with pressure, preceded by movements and griping in the abdomen (first three days).

urgent desire for stool, that was soft and of the usual amount, followed by rumbling in the abdomen, cutting below the navel, and constant urging, only once, however, resulting in a slight evacuation (second day).

after an interval of half an hour, during which the straining never entirely ceased, excessive urging, and a thin yellow stool with burning and tenesmus in the anus, also with pain about the navel (second day).

The predominant mental condition of Natrum Carbonicum Nat. c. is one of profound sadness, depression, and melancholy; constantly occupied with sad thoughts; though there is also the opposite, great gaiety and talkativeness.

The hypochondriacal mood is often an accompaniment of the condition of the digestive mucous membrane.

The depression and irritability is agg. after a meal, the aggravation diminishing as digestion advances, "as the food passes through the duodenum." Such patients, says Farrington, are decidedly averse to society, even that of their own family.

The indigestion is agg. from vegetables and starchy foods. agg.

From milk. The tongue has some characteristic symptoms, notably affection of the under surface and fraenum, and it is so heavy and unwieldy that the patient has difficulty in speaking.

The common practice of taking Bicarbonate of Soda for indigestion and heartburn is founded on a true relationship (though Natrum Carbonicum Nat. c. is the Carbonate and not the Bi-carbonate), but the indiscriminate and excessive use of it only intensifies the trouble.

The nearest analogue of Natrum Carbonicum Nat. c. in this and in the female sexual sphere is Sepia Sepia.

The nervous system is strongly affected, and symptoms of hysteria appear.

A leading note is agg. from exertion, mental or bodily.

Great debility from any exertion; unsteady walk, any little obstruction on pavement = falling; or he falls without any apparent cause.

There are contractions of muscles and tendons, and also relaxation of tissues.

Ankle-joints are weak and burn.

Twitching in muscles and limbs.

I have cured with Natrum Carbonicum Nat. c. "jerking of hands on going to sleep." Among the Peculiar Sensations are As if head too large.

As if forehead would burst.

As if head would be drawn back.

As if ears were closed up.

As of a bubble bursting in ear.

As if tip of tongue were cracked.

Dryness of mouth as if caused by heat of breath.

As if veins of right leg were bruised.

Motion as from a foetus in uterus.

Blisters on points of toes as if scalded.

Emaciation, anaemia, bloating are prominent effects of Natrum Carbonicum Nat. c.; as also is swelling and induration of glands. Natrum Carbonicum Nat. c. is suited to Light-haired people; persons of leuco-phlegmatic constitution with aversion to open air, and to exercise, mental or physical.

Stitches go from within out.

Right upper and left lower are particularly affected.

A peculiar symptom of Natrum Carbonicum Nat. c. is "discharge of mucus after an embrace" in the woman; and sterility as a result.

In Med. Adv., xviii. 248 and 370, are two cases in point, one cured by J. C. Guernsey and the other by W. Jefferson Guernsey.

In both cases the woman complained that she "could not retain the semen" after the embrace.

Some of the grand keynotes of the remedy are to be found in its modalities.

Prominent among these are agg. from sun; heat; gaslight. agg.

From mental exertion; from physical exertion or strain; from least effort. agg.

From music. Natrum Carbonicum Nat. c. has great debility from heat of summer; from chronic effects of sunstroke, every spell of warm weather = headache.

Headache from sun or working under gaslight.

At the same time there is great aversion to cold air, agg. from draught of air, change of clothing, getting wet, drinking cold water, agg. damp weather, change of weather. agg.

From storms. Natrum Carbonicum Nat. c. has extreme sensitiveness to electric changes.

There is great thirst for cold water, but agg. on drinking it (stitches in spleen). agg.

By rest; agg. lying on left side (palpitation; stitch in back to anus); agg. sitting.

Moving amel. Moving head = cracking in cervical vertebrae.

Moving = profuse sweat.

Most symptoms come on or are agg. in morning. "Sinking" 10 to 11 a.m. agg.

On alternate days. agg.

During full moon. Eating amel. sinking, agg. dyspepsia and hypochondriasis. agg.

From milk; from vegetable diet; from cold drink when over-heated. amel.

By pressure, rubbing, scratching, wiping with hand. amel.

Boring into ears and nose with fingers.

CARBONATE OF SODA. WASHING SODA.

In the first edition Hahnemann published a pathogenesis of Natrum carbonicum, containing 308 symptoms. The salt was then proved by Nenning and SchréTerebinthina ter, and their results -making 625 symptoms in all-appeared in the third volume of the of Hartlaub and Trinks. These two symptom lists, with (presumably) provings of the 30th by Langhammer, Hering and Gross, and some fresh observations on patients by Hahnemann himself, form the present pathogenesis.

Dissolve the natrum of the shops (the basic part of common salt or of Natrum Sulphuricum Glauber's salt) in two parts of its own weight of distilled water, boiling-hot, filter the solution through blotting-paper, and cause it to crystallize in a cellar. These crystals consist of rhombic-octaedra and rhomboidal prisms. One grain of these crystals, dried on blotting-paper (before they fall into powder), is taken for the preparation of the various homoeopathic potencies, being treated in the manner of the other dry medicinal substances.

Sodium carbonate. Hahnemann. Na2 CO3 10H2 O.

* *

Proved by Hahnemann, Hering and others.

Persons who are in the habit of taking carbonate of soda for sour stomach get a proving of Natrum Carbonicum. I have met some of these people and been able to confirm many Natrum symptoms.

Old dyspeptics who are always belching and have sour stomach and rheumatism.

after twenty years they are stoop-shouldered, pale, sensitive to cold, chilly, aggravated by the least draft.

require much clothing.

unable to resist the cold or the heat.

require a medium climate.

are worse from the changes of the weather.

their digestive, rheumatic, and gouty troubles are all worse from the weather changes.

The rattling of paper causes palpitation, irritability and melancholy. Estrangement from family and friends. Aversion to mankind and to society; to relatives, to strangers; feels a great division between himself and them; sensitive to, certain persons.

Music causes a tendency to suicide, melancholy, weeping and trepidation; playing the piano is so exhausting that she must lie down; music causes great sadness which increases to religious insanity.

Natrum Carbonicum is true of all the Sodiums, but especially so of Natrum carb.; aggravation from the slam of a door, a pistol shot, which causes headache and complaints in general, aggravated from music.

Digestion The more soda these patients take, the more flatulent do they become.

they are stoop-shouldered.

digestion is difficult, and finally milk will not digest at all, bringing on a diarrhoea with undigested, lienteric stools.

also, starch causes flatulence and looseness of the bowels, Many symptoms from drinking cold water when overheated.

Borax Borax, Sepia Sepia, Arsenicum Album Ars., and Natrum carb are the remedies most inclined to produce ulceration of the tips and knuckles of the fingers, and also the toes.

Vesicular eruptions on the body in patches and circles.

the herpes family is especially, related to Natr. carb.

zona, herpes labialis, herpes preputialis.

patches as large as a dollar on the hips, thighs and back. Smaller patches show vesicles containing a white serum, burning, smarting and itching, better from scratching.

The eruption passes away with a crust, but will often ulcerate, it does not heal and an ulcer forms. Circulation feeble.

wounds suppurate. Feet and skin burn. Crusty eruptions on the skin that have not been vesicular.

but most Natr. carb. and Nat Mur Natr. mur eruptions are of the vesicular form. Tingling, biting, itching, changing place, now here and now there.

cold skin. sweaty body.

Book-keepers lose the ability to add up figures. In reading a page, the one previous to, it soon goes out of the mind. The memory will not hold out from the beginning to the end of a sentence. Forgets what he reads.

Confusion of mind follows and then he is unable, to perform any mental labor. Men become so fatigued from the details of business that a confusion of the mind comes over them, they get brain fag.

Oversensitive to heat, especially after sunstroke, even some years after.

has to be well shaded when walking in the sun, must seek a cool or dark place the patient has not had the proper acute remedy during the attack the remedy is aggravated by both cold and heat, but this is a special aggravation from the heat of the sun.

head troubles are not worse from cold in Natr. carb.

Old cases of brain fag with weakness and trepidation. The body troubles are aggravated from cold and in the winter; as cold as if he had no blood in the body, extremities cold, and he cannot get them warm; cold as ice to, the knees and elbows.

The body and extremities are worse in winter, the head in summer.

Anxious trembling and sweating during pains.

The senses are all disturbed; oversensitive to light pain in the eyes from a bright light.

Oversensitive hearing; little noises seem enormous, like thunder; the crumpling of paper seems like the crashing of a waterfall.

Taste perverted, too sensitive, so that the tasting of things ordinarily grateful becomes painful; sometimes loss of taste.

Loss of smell. Hay fever, catarrhal fever; where catarrhal conditions are present there is copious, thick, yellow, purulent discharge from the eyes, nose, vagina.

Otalgia, with sharp, darting, piercing pains when the mental state, the chilliness and other generals are present. The discharges are commonly offensive.

Coryzas trouble much; always has a cold in the head the watery discharge is of short duration and is soon followed by a thick copious flow of yellow mucus.

Natr. carb. is ameliorated by eating.

when chilly, he eats and is able to keep warm.

the pains are ameliorated after eating.

he has an all gone feeling and pain in the stomach which drives him to eat.

he gets hungry at 5 A.M. and 11 P.M. 5 A.M. is the favorite time for the Natr. carb aggravation.

he becomes so hungry at this time that he is forced out of bed to eat something, which also ameliorates the pain.

Nervous hunger in pregnant women, who cannot sleep unless they get up at night and eat crackers, calls for Psorinum Psorinum

One of the most frequently corroborated symptoms of Natrum Carbonicum is the modality -aggravated by mental exertion. The patient is unable to think or perform any mental labor without headache (Argentum Nitricum Argentum, nit., Sabadilla Sabadilla) vertigo or a sense of stupefaction. This symptom alone makes it an invaluable remedy, as we often come across that kind of patient. At least I have, and have frequently gained great credit by relieving them. I generally use the 30th potency here. Again this kind of headache is apt to be worse on exposure to the sun's rays or under gaslight. Persons suffering from over-heating from the sun may find relief from Natrum carb., Glonoin Glonoine, Lachesis Lachesis or Lyssin (Hydrophobinum) Lyssin. Like the other Natrums, the carbonate is greatly depressed in spirits, wholly occupied with sad thoughts. It is one of our best remedies for chronic catarrh of the nose, which extends to the posterior nares and throat. There is violent hawking and splitting of thick mucus that constantly collects again, (Corallium). Although never produced in the proving, clinical use has proved it a great remedy for "bearing down" pains. Here the concomitant symptoms of mind, sadness, over-sensitiveness to noise, especially music, etc., will confirm its choice. Weakness of the ankles from childhood finds a good remedy in Natrum carb. I cured a very bad case in a young man who was very fleshy and walked on the inside of his ankles, feet bending outward, from such weakness, his ankles refusing to support him, especially when a little over-fatigued. Those are the only uses of Natrum Carb. that I know from personal experience or observation.

Characteristics

Natrum Carbonicum Nat. carb. is the typical salt of the Natrum group. It was proved by Hahnemann, and is one of the antipsoric remedies of the Chronic Diseases. In old-school practice its chief uses are as an external application in solution to burns and eczema, as a douche in nasal or vaginal catarrh. Natrum Carbonicum Nat. c. forms the alkaline basis in most soaps, and most persons know by experience the effect of using soap with an excess of alkali. It almost burns off the superficial layers of the epidermis, and leaves the skin dry and cracked. The provings, whilst developing in Natrum Carbonicum Nat. c. a remedy of polychrest importance, confirms its irritating action, and show Natrum Carbonicum Nat. c. to be a true remedy for chapped hands and faces, rough, dry skins, eczema, herpes, warts and scrofulous conditions of skin. On the mucous membranes the effects are no less irritating. The whole alimentary tract from mouth to anus is irritated
