Reactive Airway Disease

My 12 year old son is diagnosed with reactive airway disease. He has had this since birth. As he gets older he gets attacks less and less. He was never diagnosed with 'asthma' because the specialists say he is not chronic enough. The last time I took him to see a doctor the doctor fussed at me and said if I do not keep him constantly on preventative meds I will cause damage to his lungs. Well, I do not keep him on meds. Here are his symptoms when he has an attack: it always starts with a constant cough, congested nose or runny nose, sometimes a headache, labored breathing, very low energy level and sometimes a sore throat. An albuterol inhaler (which he keeps in his backpack & only uses when necessary)wil not help this situation. I always get out the breathing machine and give him albuterol treatment about every 3 hours. Within about 24-48 hours it is over. The runny nose may persist a while longer but the cough and labored respiration is over. I know albuterol is hard for his heart and the allergy medication he is supposed to take everyday of his life is probably not better plus it is over $100.00 per month. I can not justify this when he may have a problem 4 times a year or less. He seems to have an attack religouly every fall. He was allergy tested as a younger child and not much showed up. We have dogs, cats, dust bunnies and a gerbil. None of these things bother him. But he will get odd rashes: He had scarlet fever without the fever several years ago, he is allergic to sterling silver necklaces, allergic to the metal on his glasses, has had minor odd rashes on his abdomen, back of his arms. I give him multiple vitamins on a daily basis and he also gets vitamin C daily. He is about 20 pounds overweight and is so smart he has had poems published, math wizard, photographic memory and is in the gifted class at school, but he can not describe to me how he feels when he is not feeling well. One time last year we were in a restaurant and he said Mom my stomach is hurting. I asked him where he could not tell me. I told him to go to the car and would follow. He stood up his eyes rolled back in his head and he fainted or passed out! By the time the ambulance came he was awake and he would not go. I had his doctor run tests and they did, bloodwork a brain & stomach X-ray, the works...they found nothing. Oh, he is also flat footed, craves sugar constantly and wears glasses for far sightedness and one of his eyes is worse than the other. He is my question...what can I give him daily to heal and make his lungs stronger, help prevent RAD attacks and deal with these rashes?
