Questions re: homeopathy in general

I am trying to learn as much as possible about homeopathy

I have a few questions which I hope learned friends here can answer.

1. When do you know to 'build up' the potency of a remedy? When do you know to start at 30c or 6c and how do you know what the next potency should be?

2. Why do some homeopaths prescribe taking the same dose twice? If i took 30c, one day, would i take 30c in a week from now? and why? This does not make sense to me to take the same dose in succession.

3. Are water doses better? why did Hahnemann talk about water doses before he died, but lots of homeopaths dont use water doses?

4. How important is it to be a homeopathic classical 'purist', is there room for interpretation in homeopathy?

5. Is it possible to damage someone forever with the wrong, or too strong remedy? I presume there is, because if homeopathy can cure, it should also be able to kill?

I have lots more questions, but will save till later.

thank you

1. When do you know to 'build up' the potency of a remedy? When do you know to start at 30c or 6c and how do you know what the next potency should be?

[SV]: Okay. so picking potency is the stuff of folklore in homeopathy. Lot of people have different opinions on this. First of all, very rarely (except in acute cases with severely worsening symptoms), do we need to start above a 30c in potency. The more pathology (tissue change on physical levels) there is , the lower the potency needs to be to avoid aggravations.

You also have to see how much vitality there is in the patient, as higher the vitality, higher the potency that can be given without aggravations.

Also, if you see deep mental indications of a remedy, there is enough vitality in the patient and you are very confident about the choice of similmum , the potency can be on the higher side (still not above 200c to start with).

2. Why do some homeopaths prescribe taking the same dose twice? If i took 30c, one day, would i take 30c in a week from now? and why? This does not make sense to me to take the same dose in succession.

[SV]: They are not homeopaths in the strict sense as if they were, they would know that the vital force does not receive the same unmodified dynamization of a remedy again once it has responded to it without delaying cure or causing accessory symptoms to develop.

3. Are water doses better? why did Hahnemann talk about water doses before he died, but lots of homeopaths dont use water doses?

[SV]: The water based method( in particular the LMs) is the apex of homeopathic theory and yields cures which are fast without causing undue aggravations that are often evident by high potency dry doses of the centesimal potency. The water based method is much more difficult to master as it is an art to tailor the dose, dilution and sucussions to the sensitivity of every patient differently.

4. How important is it to be a homeopathic classical 'purist', is there room for interpretation in homeopathy?

[SV]: There is only one way in which homeopathy can be used to cure in a rapid, permanent, gentle way,and that is basing it on 3 tenets of :

-Single medicine
-Similar medicine
-Minimum dose

5. Is it possible to damage someone forever with the wrong, or too strong remedy? I presume there is, because if homeopathy can cure, it should also be able to kill?

[SV] If the same potency of deep acting medicines (particularly higher than 200c) is repeated many times, permanent damage can happen. Greater the power to cure, the greater the ability to cause harm as well.

Rebecca, thank you for posting. I was going to do the same thing. My questions are :
1. How do you space out the single remedy on a single day? Sometimes I see it to be repeated every hour, sometimes its to be given once, etc... How is it decided?
2. Is it possible to 'overdose'? What would you do in case too much was taken at once, say a child getting into a medicine chest and eating a bottle of a remedy?
Thank you

Natasha, yes, i wonder about that too, if you are taking a water dose remedy, do you only take it once? and if so, how do you get the full impact of it, if half of the dose is left in the bottle?

[SV]: For potencies 30c and below, usually in very young children I start with a single dose (to be extra careful), otherwise I give 3 quick doses equally spaced where each dose if from a remedy bottle where 1 pellet has been dissolved. Since the repetition is done within the primary action of the remedy, repeating the same potency is OK. I almost always use only the single dose approach (but given in water) for potencies above 200c.

It is the dilution ratio which matters more, than the amount of remedy. So, the number of pellets used to make the solution will matter the most if the dosing is directly from remedy bottle. If the dosage is using a dilution glass (which is needed in hyper-sensitive patients in centesimals and is always needed with LM potencies), then the amount of water in the dilution glass and the amount taken out from the remedy bottle to be mixed in dilution glass, both will matter. To answer your question, if the child eats a dry dose bottle (pellets), it doesnt matter if he eats 10 pellets or 100, it will be 1 dose. BUT, I will be very careful in storing LM potencies as they are not meant to be eaten. They are exclusively design to be given in water, with a dilution glass, and with sucussions between successive doses.
