smelly nasal drainage post adenoid surgery

A friend of mine has a child with very smelly drainage from his nose. She describes the smell as rotten. The smell was there before surgery and is still there 2 months after surgery. The doctor wants to operate again. Is there something that this doc could be missing that would cause an overwhleming stinky smell like this. She said he also had a faint red tinge from one of the nostrils. Any advice?

I would never be able to answer all of that since this is not me, but my frined's child...and event then, he is adopted so I am not sure she would know past family info and the child is so young that some of the questions would be unaswerable. Either way...she took him to the ER out of curiosity and they found a surgicle sponge left behind and removed it so hopefully the smell will go away. Thank you for your time, but I think they resolved the issue.
