my brother's food poisoning

hi everyone - i have a huge favor to ask, my brother has had digestive symptoms that could possibly be from bad chinese food the night before last. about 2 hours after eating, he had severe stomach pains and started vomiting for about an hour. the vomiting stopped, but the stomach pain/soreness has continued for the last day and more, and he is having trouble sleeping because of the pain. it hurts him to even move, he is liking to stay perfectly still so he doesn't aggravate his stomach. he also has had pretty frequent diarrhea after the chinese.

i think constitutionally he may be arsenic (severe fear of vomiting from a child, OCD, panic attacks, health anxiety) but he also has taken very poor care of himself lately, eats lots of fatty/junk foods and drinks lots of liquor. he has been on anti-depressants for years due to his OCD/depression.

i gave him aresnic 6c once after he first got sick. the next day i gave him nux vomica 30c once in the afternoon, and got him to take it again just now (it's 4am). he doesn't like taking the remedies because they take a while to dissolve in his mouth and i don't think he believes they help.

can you offer me any advice?

thanks so much,
dan

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Nux is the right remedy. Ars was also a good selection. You may ask him to continue with Nux until he recovers.

Needing to stay perfectly still to avoid pain is a very typical Bryonia symptom. As an acute you might consider that remedy as well.

The specific symptoms are always the highest priority in choosing a remedy.

thanks so much to both of you! i gave him bryonia and will continue with the nux as well.

Don't give 2 remedies at once! The interactions between them are unpredictable. Just choose one remedy and persist with that while there is improvement, changing to a new remedy if there are no results or if the symptoms markedly change.

i haven't been giving them at the same time - spaced out a few hours in between, is that ok? he says they aren't helping him though - he still has the stomach pain and diarrhea and a little fever.

That is still giving them together. One remedy at at time, if it is right it will take care of all his problems. Giving a second remedy so quickly with either neutralize the first one, or add symptoms.

There are not really enough symptoms to make a proper choice. Prescribing on a single keynote or the etiology (cause) is prone to failure.

Do you know how to take a homoeopathic case for an acute?

i'm afraid not, i read quite a bit about remedies for food poisoning and narrowed it down based on his specific symptoms. i have a book on case taking, but i haven't really had a chance yet to read it. sorry! i was just in a jam because my brother is feeling pretty awful.

Ok it is not too hard.

Go through each symptom, one at a time. Get the following information:

What does the symptoms feel like (pain/sensation) - exact feeling not vague, try to imagine the pain yourself from his description.

What makes the symptom worse? (position, environmental factors, food, drink, anything at all, be exact)

What makes the symptom better?

What time of the day does it happen?

What symptoms tend to occur together?

What symptoms occur one after the other?

What is the general state of the patient (energy, sleep, mood etc) - be descriptive here.

What is he asking for to make himself generally feel better?

What is he avoiding or rejecting as it appears to make him generally worse?

Also you need to note things like:

Colour (skin, discharges)
Odour (body, discharges)
Taste (discharges, in mouth, of food)
Bowel habits
Urinary frequency
Appetite generally

OK, I'll do my best here:

What does the symptoms feel like (pain/sensation) - exact feeling not vague, try to imagine the pain yourself from his description.

He's described his stomach pain as 'sore' or 'cramping' and says when he touches it it feels 'bloated'. His pain led to vomiting his food back up the first night. Watery diarrhea. Feels a little feverish or 'hot', mostly in his head. Says he's 'not hungry'.

What makes the symptom worse? (position, environmental factors, food, drink, anything at all, be exact)

Movement aggravates his stomach a lot, causes stomach pain. Lying on side makes it worse, lifting his legs makes it worse.

What makes the symptom better?

Sitting still, drinking little bits of water or 7up. Crackers.

What time of the day does it happen?

Constant throughout the day.

What symptoms tend to occur together?

Cramps are constant, diarrhea comes and goes.

What symptoms occur one after the other?

The feverish feeling came the first night after getting sick, and also a couple days later it's back again.

What is the general state of the patient (energy, sleep, mood etc) - be descriptive here.

He's very low on energy, hasn't slept much, seems like a sloth kind of. Asked him about his mood, and he said 'Pain'. He also worries a lot about his health, he researched on the Internet all the things he's not supposed to eat, and has a very long standing fear of vomiting.

What is he asking for to make himself generally feel better?

He asks for 7-up with ice every once in a while.

What is he avoiding or rejecting as it appears to make him generally worse?

Eating, he only eats a few bites at a time because he's 'not hungry'. Movement makes his stomach pain worse so he stays still.

No tastes or odors, bowel habits are the frequent diarrhea. Only urinating when he has the diarrhea. No appetite. Diarrhea he says is wet and colored 'black' or 'dark brown'.

I gave him byronia 30c twice this morning and later this afternoon a 30c does of arsenic album.

He is really frustrated and even a little angry about the constant pain. He doesn't feel like the remedies help and wants to see a 'real doctor'.

Distended painful abdomen
Watery diarrhea
Motion of affected part aggravates
Lying on side aggravates
Lifting legs aggravates
Desire ice drinks

This still adds up to Bryonia. What potency are you giving him and how many doses, and also how are you giving him the dose?

What other remedies do you have available to try?

Ok firstly, if he wants to go to a doctor that is his choice. Don't create a situation where he is resenting homoeopathy for not letting him get to a 'real' doctor. That will just makes things harder in the future if you want him to accept it.

Secondly, stop mixing the medicines. You are just creating further problems. Stick to one medicine. Use them often enough to get some effects out of them

Repeat the Bryonia (if he is willing to take it), make sure it is in liquid form so you can succuss the bottle. Every dose must be succussed (hit firmly against the palm of the hand) to make it effective. Place a single drop on the tongue. Do this every 10 minutes until 4 doses have been taken.

Of the other remedies that come up, I might look at Phosphorous or Chamomilla.

The other issue might be potency - 200c is what I will typically use for acutes, although I would expect to see something out of 30c if it is repeated enough.

thanks so much! i definitely want him to see a doctor too, we just may not be able to for a day or two.

i don't know how to do liquid forms...i have byronia pellets, can i administer those? how would i do that?

ddollar last decade
Do you have a small bottle with a lid? Smallest bottle you can find. Make sure it is clean (no chemicals in it). Fill it with water, dissolve 2 pillules in it, then hit it against the palm of the hand or a book, twice only, before giving a tiny amount to him (closest you can manage to a drop - perhaps 1/4 teaspoon). Hit it each time you give a dose.

will do! i'll report back later, but i think he's agreed to do it. thanks again -

i forgot to succuss the 2nd and 3rd doses! is this OK? should i give him two more to make up for it?

ddollar last decade
Without succussion the dose is not altered enough to be effective. Continue every 15 mins until you have given 4 doses that have been succussed.

just an update - i finally decided to take my brother to the E.R. after nothing seemed to be helping his stomach pain and vomiting. turns out he had a ruptured appendix and has for at least a couple weeks. he just got out of surgery and will be in the hospital for several days while they try to stave off infection in his abdominal cavity.

thanks for all your help again, hopefully this won't deter my brother from trying homeopathy in the future, but i think he understands the difference in what each type of medicine can treat.

This is where homoeopathy is limited and orthodox medicine has it uses. It pays to get medical opinions in those situations.
