The ABC Homeopathy Forum

mastitis at three weeks post partum

I am just starting to explore and learn about homeopathy and find it a bit overwhelming, hoping someone here can help.

I woke up yesterday with excruitating pain in my left breast, and was unable to nurse. I developed chills and overall body aches shortly afterwards. My breast is hard across the top, and always feels full - even after a feeding. I've been doing heat (dry and moist), showers, baths, etc - and feeding her mostly on the affected side (still very painful on initial latch, but managable afterwards). I'm taking vit c and garlic as well as echinacia tincture in hot tea. Wondering if there are any homeopathics that might be useful, I'm really hoping to avoid antibiotics.

Also - my baby has a horrid cold right now, and her nasal conjestion is making it hard for her to breastfeed - any suggestions here are welcome as well.

Hi,
I am a mother who just made it through a horrible bout of mastitis without antibiotics! I used the book "The Complete Guide to Homeopathy" by Dr. Christopher Hammond. In the back of the book there are charts for choosing the remedy that fits your situation. I will try to give you some of the info. in the "breatfeeding chart" so that you might choose the best remedy for yourself.

Belladona: breasts bright red and hot; red streaks; very tender; pains throbbing; worse for jar; worse for least touch.

Bryonia: inflamed (consolidated milk); breast or breasts must be supported; onset rapid; pains burning; pains stitching, tearing; worse for movement.

Mercurias vivas: worse for heat, cold, everything.

Phytolacca decandra: abcess forming; breasts hard and heavy; lumps hard; pains intense; pains radiating.

I had my husband go out and buy phytolacca decandra, and even though it was a great match, it didn't really help. Later he went to the "fever chart" (I just typed in most of the "breastfeeding chart") and he selected belladonna--although it wasn't a perfect match by any means--and the belladona worked immediately. My chills were gone within a minute and I fell asleep within a few more minutes. Each time I awoke and felt the chills returning, I took another and they went away immediately. I was also throwing up before the belladona and after I started the belladona each time I felt I was about to throw up, I took one, and the sensation immediately disappeared. I managed to sleep most of the day, except for feeds of course. The next day, my fever was completely gone. I also had a nipple that was cracked so I used hypericum cream on it. After the fever was gone I still had clogged ducts that were painful and were not going away with the homeopathy, so I started taking lecithin capsules (1200mg three times a day--an online LLL recommendation) and by the end of the next day, all of the knots were out of my breast. Homeopathy definitely took care of the infection and fever though.

Good luck! It can be done! Feel free to e-mail me if you want any more info.

The Bryonia worked great on me, it was sudden, swollen, very tender, bluish, aversion to touching them with anything.

Silica and Bryonia turn up! Bryonia looks more favourable as there are chills and body ache associated. It is also more suited than Silica because your child has Cold which if you take, should also help the child in cold and congestion. I suggest Bryonia 6x potency 3-4 times a day for 1 week. Should start getting better from 2-3rd day. If after 1 week, much better, then need to go to higher potency for the next three days which I shall let you know after you post back the results in a week's time.

No garlic and coffee when you take homeopathic remedies. Occasional normal black hot tea is fine.
