Low level of iron and hair loss! please help!

i have been facing severe hair loss problem since 3 months ago. i have seen a doctor and taken a blood test which revealed that my level of iron is very low.the doctor suspects this is the cause of my hair loss and thus subscribe me with iron supplement. (Ratiopharm) i have been taking this supplement for 3 weeks now but my hair loss is still as severe as ever!

1.this made me doubt if my hair loss is REALLY due to iron deficiency?
2.how long does it take to see the result on my hair after taking iron supplement?
3.i am a non-smoker and i am not facing any stress problem. i eat healthily and do sports. WHY am i losing hair then?
4. if it is not due to iron deficiency, HOW can i know the REAL cause of my hair loss?

please help me, anyone.i do not want to wait until i have loss all my hair only i realised the real cause behind it.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Did you try to check your thyroid? One of the symptoms of hypothyroidism is hair loss. I would advice you to check your levels of hormones THS, T3 and T4, and see if this is the problem. If you take oral contraceptives or anticoagulant drugs, hair loss can be for that reason too.

There are a lot of homeopathic remedies for the hair loss and you can try one of this depends on your simptoms:

Specific remedies to be taken every 12 hours for up 1 month:

- Hair loss after childbirth, or premature baldness and greying -Lycopodium 6c

- Hair loss associated with boils on scalp and headaches which become more insistent at night, person very depressed- Aurum metallicum 6c

- Hair is brittle and falls out in little tufts Fluoric acid 6c

- Scalp feels painful when touched, loss of body hair as well- Selenium 6c

- Hair loss related to hormone changes after childbirth or at menopause, indifference towards loved ones- Sepia 6c

- Hair loss after grief or extreme emotion, predominant feelings are indifference and exhaustion Phosphoric ac. 6c

- Hair loss follows severe injury -Arnica 6c

- Hair loss associated with dryness of hair and scalp- Kali carb. 6c

- Hair loss in an elderly person who has poor circulation and is mentally slow -Baryta carb. 6c

- Hair loss associated with dandruff and white crusts on scalp, especially around hairline -Natrum mur. 6c

- Hair falls out in handfuls- Phosphorus 6c

You can try to take some B complex vitamins, vitamin C and zinc and eat more proteins.

I hope it will help! good luck!

Hair breaking off is indicative of Thyroid.

Gabituca has very good things to say.

I will only add, that the allopathic iron supplement is very bad for the body.

Go to the health store and get iron made from only vegies. This way one can raise iron without damage.

Blessings, Sabra

Hi Gabutica

What's the homeopathic treatment for hair loss due to hypothyroidism, also does it make a difference if the sex is different

Also I want to add another observation, eating fish on a daily basis, improved the texture of my hair, and stalled the hair fall to quiet an extent.

I am a male

its ok my iron was very low and my hair was always goin down the drain falling out all over the place. i hated to comb it or even touch it. And yes it did get very thin. But now i have alot of new growth alot of i call stubbys comeing in and this didnt all happen untill all my iron levels became normal again my tibc hct ferritin hgb and it took me all of 7 months to do this with over the counter iron pills and takein them 3xs a day. There is hope you just got to be a little patient. Worryin will only make it fall out more. Just baby it for now and cut it shorter no syling or pulling it back tight and it will come back

This reply is specially for Annie Kashif. You might have found the solution already by now. But anyway.
Hi Annie,
You were taking iron levels but your body might not be absorbing it. Iron absorbs better with vitamin c together. So, with iron tabs or foods, lots of lots of vitamin c in tabs or food form is good way to absorb it.

Let me put in different words:

Hair fall in women due to iron deficiency means 'due to iron store deficiency called Ferritin'.

Ferritin is protein holding iron, from which hemoglobin is made. When there is hemoglobin deficiency, it is actual anemia. But in several cases where it is not anemia just low Ferritin. Low ferritin alone can cause havoc in body.

Low Ferritin =>
~ Female Hair loss
~ Body pains
~ Possibility of Hypothyroid
~ ADHD
~ Restless leg

A healthy Ferritin range is perhaps 50 - 250. My wife is very low 12 (almost constant), even after all sorts of allopathic and homeopathic care.

However, normally it is expected that daily supplement for six months of 60-100 mg of elemental iron with co-factors B12, folic acid, C, etc. should be able to raise to normal level.

I have tried homeopathy, bio salts and combinations like R31 for my wife. They did not help.

I'll be glad to see any good recommendation in this thread.

A very good natural rememdy is Black Strap Molasses. This is the material which has been stripped off the sugar to the most extent. It is syrupy thick. Two tablespoons a day would make a dramatic difference without side effects.

The cause of thinning hair actually depends on individual, as they say. Some are low on zinc, some on folic acid, some on inisitol, some on biotin, some on silica.
It all depends.
And if person have thing called Tinea capitis or fungal infection on hair, nothing works. Nothing, NADA. Do not waste your time trying vitamins and using hair growing oil. JUST USE YELLOW SELSUN or any shampoo that has SELENIUM SULFIDE.
Follow instruction properly.
And your itchiness, falling hair all stops with the regular use.
Another option is to massage oregano oil mixed with coconut oil. Make is strong as possible. It's not gonna hurt. But the wild Mediterranean oregano oil must have 80% of carvacol in it to be effective. It is very good anti fungal.
One of the best is this Super strength oregano oil from
healthy-health website.
Good luck.

I'm sorry, I mean to say inositol.
And one more info: vitamin A & zinc is important for hair loss remedy but too much of vitamin A & zinc can eventually lead to hair loss.
Zinc hinders the absorption of iron if taken together.
Bhringraj Extract/oil and Saw Palmetto extract/oil is also famous for growing hair back.
And iron absorbs better with vitamin C & B complex specially B6.

To continue on what I said before:
Rosemary oil is known to stimulate hair growth and so does lavender oil.
Fab Iron tabs has all B complex, biotin & some vitamin c.
Swisse's Hair Nail Skin and Blackmores Hair Nail Skin is also good. One has zinc, the other has folic acid.
Just go to google and search for ingredients for these to ensure which one's suitable for you. It has silica, inositol, biotin, B complex etc. etc. all the things hair need but in a low dose. Hairtopia is popular but not available in Australia.
Vitamin C from food is not enough so get concentrated form. Too much vitamin c goes down the waste, no side effects.
Never take iron with zinc. zinc hinders the absorption of iron.
Horsetail is very, very rich in silica, important for hair.
Nettle helps absorb iron better.

Oh by the way,
The tannins in tea and coffee hamper iron absorption, so avoid these when trying to increase iron levels.

There is a shampoo from Avalon Organics with Saw Palmetto & biotin for thickening hair.
AFTER SHAMPOOING HAIR, RINSE HAIR WITH ROSEMARY, NETTLE, SAGE & HORSETAIL POTION.
You have to boil them with water for 10 minutes, low boil and cool to lukewarm and rinse hair and do not wash again. Keep like this.
These herbs are known to grow & make hair thicker. The stronger the potion, the better.

However, thyroid problem can also cause hair loss.Lack of iodine can cause thyroid problem. Iodised salt may help the problem. But you need to see doctor to ensure if you do have thyroid problem.
Good luck

It isn't the most common form of hair loss, but yes low iron levels can cause anemia.
When you are anemic red blood cell formation is reduced, and so your skin and hair get less oxygen.
The best advice I can give you is the Matthew Gardson's method.
You can also increase your uptake of red meat and spinach- and avoid drinking black or green tea with meals as this blocks iron uptake.
