This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
For those who want to know more about RP >>>

What are Retinal Degenerative Diseases?

Retinal degenerative diseases are a family of disorders that cause degeneration of the retina.

What is Retinitis Pigmentosa?

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is the name given to a group of inherited eye diseases that affect the retina. Retinitis pigmentosa causes the degeneration of photoreceptor cells in the retina. Photoreceptor cells capture and process light helping us to see. As these cells degenerate and die, patients experience progressive vision loss.

There are types of photoreceptor cells: rod cells and cone cells. Rod cells are concentrated along the outer perimeter of the retina. Rod cells help us to see images that come into our peripheral or side vision. They also help us to see in dark and dimly lit environments. Cone cells are concentrated in the macula, the center of the retina, and allow us to see fine visual detail in the center of our vision. Cone cells also allow us to perceive color. Together, rods and cones are the cells responsible for converting light into electrical impulses that are transmitted to the brain where “seeing” actually occurs.

What causes Retinitis Pigmentosa?

Retinitis Pigmentosa is a genetic disorder. It is programmed into your cells, not caused by injury, infection or any other external agent. Genetic defects (mutations) send faulty messages to the retinal cells which leads to their progressive degeneration, which in turn, leads to vision loss.

Hello everyone,

My name is Nayla i am 21 years old, I am from Bahrain.

I have been diagnosed with RP around 10 years ago. Currently I am in my senior year in college and as part of my graduation project, I am creating an awareness campaign to let people know about the disease and what we, patients, struggle and go through on a daily basis.

I want to ask you, if you may, to video tape yourself and tell me about how it is like to live with RP. The video tape will only be used for viewing and it will not be copied or distribted.

In the video, I would like you to state when you were diagnosed, how did you first notice or people around you noticed you had RP, how are you coping with it, how do you explain to people about and let them know what kind of assitance you need. Talk about things like that.

You could email me if you have further questions or queries. Please help me spread the awareness. I would be gratefull.

Pass this along to anyone you believe would be interested in helping me with the campaign, people like you.

1.side vision is poorest
2.alertness is reduced to a great extent
3.am unable to see in dim lighted areas even During day
4.The situation is worst during late evenings and nights..i can hardly see any thing unless there is any bright light.
I drive a two wheeler during day time..but then i think i need to stop even that after few days...extreme strain on eyes..irritation...
my all cousins face the same problem..

I was a very optimistic person, very open...after having RP my behaviour is changed greatly..i get irritated very early...lack patience

I meditate,do yoga very consistently which keeps me calm,is also a stress reliever

I have taken Glow eye tablets for 3 months and found slight improvement..

Any treatment/surgery(homeopathic medicines) that could help protect my vision..please share it with me
I'll be very grateful
