Seasonal Affected Disorder

Hello there. I'm wondering if anyone suffers from SAD? If so what do you do to help yourself? I've got a light box but I don't think it's really helping.
I just want to sleep and eat during the winter. I lack motivation and just want to curl up somewhere warm and vegetate!

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
this is not a disorder if you are not suffering from any bodily pains or ailments.

its just your body type. you are an excessively cold person.

in winter you should go for such food which make your body warm.

May be a little red wine once in a while.

Alcohol definitely warms up, and makes you feel cheerful.

Rishimba: Seasonal Affected Disorder is the name given to this condition in Britain sometimes called Winter Blues and is to do with not having enough sunlight during the winter. Do you not consider excesive tiredness to be an ailment? It's not really about being cold it's more to do with being tired and lacking energy/motivation.

Gavinimurthy: The red wine tip is all very well for cosy evenings in front of the TV but I wanted something to help me get up in the morning, when it's dark outside!

Any other thoughts. I'm taking Sepia at the moment but it doesn't seem to be helping.

Hi Julia

Now you are opening up. good.

Who suggested sepia to you? Which potency? Since how long you are taking? What is the repetetion schedule?

Hi, I suggested it to me after reading literature off the internet. Been taking 30c for two days about 4 times a day. But am now wondering if a constitutional remedy would be better because although Sepia seems to fit the symptoms I think I'm more of a Phospherous type.

now tell us what murthy has asked... i fear you are proving sepia.

also, describe all your present physical and mental symptoms.

phosphorus and sepia, both get aggravated by cold but thats not a good reason to take any of it.

phosphorus has a cold body and hot head.

it is advisable to get confirmation from practising homoeopaths about your constitution before you take them.

Phew where do I start!
I lack energy and motivation, cant seem to get started on anything usefull; cleaning the house, getting ready for Christmas, doing the laundry etc! If I go in to my bedroom I seem to end up lying in it and sleeping for two hours!

Emotionally I'm looking forward to Christmas, and am generally quite happy with life, a bit lonely sometimes (single parent - no significant other) but eveything seems like so much trouble and I don't know where to start despite making lists! I'm a little resentfull toward my kids (12 & 14) for not helping very much (no lectures please!)

I'm 41, about 1 and a half stone overweight and work part-time.

Main/mental suffering: tiredness, lethargy, poor concentration, cant settle to do anything, genearlly fed up.

Physical suffering: ache in back first thing in the morning but goes after activity.

Worse during the day up to about 6pm particularly bad between 1 and 3 pm.

At my worst I just feel knackered amd want to sleep.

First became aware of it about 3/4 years ago. It starts towards then end of October. I begin to pick up again around March time

Dull weather aggravates and a hangover. Sunny/bright day makes me feel better.

Feel worse in the 7/10 day before menstruation and for about a week afterwards.

I'm generally a positive person, empathetic, sympathetic, considerate. A little cynical. A thinker. I hate snakes and don't like the dentist. I do talk to myself. I don't mind being consoled if it's genuine. I tend to keep my problems to myself unless I'm seeing a qualified counsellor (not presently.) I sometimes resent my kids and sometimes experience a fleeting feeling of envy towards reiends who are in relationships. I sometimes dream of being burgled (once/twice a year)

I crave foods rich in carbohydrate, stodgy sweet stuff. Savoury, fatty foods. Cant think of any aversions.

Thirst is normal. Hunger changeable (cant be bothered to cook, despite a keen interest in nutrition and skill in the kitchen)

I sweat in the morning after my shower under my arms, breats and crotch.

Bowel movements regular. Sometimes loose.

No major diseases.

I have brown eyes, fair hair, few freckles. 5ft 1', normal skin tone. Weigh 11 st 12lb's

take 2 doses of NUX VOM 200C at 15 minutes interval on any one night just before sleeing. take early dinner.

repeat this dose next night.

take this remedy only on two nights.

this would bring you good improvement and possibly another set of symptoms. please come back after 7 days
with the fresh picture.

also tell me,

- when did u separate from your husband.

- do you think the physical problems started soon after separation.

- were you quite active in your 'love life' and now you are missing out on the physical side as well.

I separated from my husband 7 years ago.

If by physical you mean the aching back then no, that started within the last two years I think.

I only made the link of feeling low during winter time about three years ago. I cant really remember how I was when I separated.

I realised that my marriage wasn't going anywhere in the month of August but didn't separate until the month of October so you may have hit upon something there, that connection had never occured to me before.

I miss being in a physical relationship now and again, probably around the time of ovulation.

It'll take me a few days to get hold of that strength of Nux Vom. I only have 6c at home and will have to get it through mail order which will get stuck in the Christmas post. Shall I use the 6c to get me started or will that be counter-productive?

There might be homeopathic remedies that would help with SAD, but many believe it is a Vitamin D deficiency and supplements improve the condition.

You can Google SAD and Vitamin D and find many sites which discuss this.
