Constant congestion, enlarged adenoids

Hi. I am trying to find out if anyone can help me, PLEASE!! I have been trying to help my son now for 4 1/2 years. He is now 5 years old. I had the flu one week before he was born, was treated with antibiotics, morphine, and a sleeping pill. I also was on Zofran when I was pregnant every other day due to nausea and vomiting the entire pregnancy. I also woke up in a pool of blood when I was 16 weeks pregnant with him, but then nothing else. He was 9-13 when born, vaginally. I had was extremely anemic when he was born and almost received a transfusion. A few days after having him, I was diagnosed with sinusitis and a massive UTI after a 105.1 fever and was placed on antibiotics again. He was supplemented with formula while I was on antibiotics once we found out not supposed to nurse while taking. Not sure if any of the above relates to what is going on, but wanted to relay the whole story. I have taken and given him probiotics several times throughout the years. He started with congestion at 6 mos. old after vaccination and I had just started him on some solid foods. Since then, he has basically had a constant runny nose until about 4 1/2 years old when diagnosed with a major amount of allergies (milk, wheat, soy, peanuts, corn, eggs, garlic, mustard, chicken, turkey, cantaloupe, peas, oats, rye, etc. - yes, eating is exciting around here!) and we put him on a very strict diet. Nasal discharge rotated in color to every color imaginable. He was treated several times with antibiotics due to sinus and ear infection but not many times. He sleeps with his head tilted way back and on bad nights wants his head propped up. He has been diagnosed with central and obstuctive sleep apnea which, by personal observance and opinion, has improved when we follow the diet closely. The doctor said his adenoids did fill 85% of the area they sit in before the diet that was started in September (has not been reevaluated). He does try to sneak food he is not supposed to have. He still talks with nasal sound, although speech pathologist states no delay -just nasal sound that is hard to interpret. Audiologist states fluid behind ears. ENT wants to take out adenoids and shave tonsils. We want to avoid that if possible. I have done nasal rinses with him but still not able to get adenoids down. An MRI turned out to be normal, thank God. We had been seeing a chiropractic neurologist for a while with some improvement but still not completely better. He has drastic mood changes, especially on days after I could hear the sleep apnea at night. He is very intelligent (Gazelle test shows 5 1/2 to 6 year old level) and can focus to accomplish tasks. Loves puzzles, stories and running around. Very active unless something involves him mentally. Never has taken long naps. Always has wanted to be in bed at 7pm and up at 7am. Sweats easily with running around. I had a hair analysis done, and it showed an abnormally high aluminum count (I have switched to alum free baking powder and now monitor all ingredients) and low elecrolytes. I have gotten CRA (complex reflex analysis) done on him and they treated him for the low electrolytes and tried to pull out toxins. I will repeat the hair analysis shortly. I have tried Chamomile, Nux Vomica (for a while he would not eat dinner well, but does now), and Pulsatilla. I don't know what to try next. We really want to avoid surgery, if possible, and from what they have said, the main problem seems to be enlarged adenoids. If anyone can advise anything, it would be greatly appreciated. We live on the east coast of Florida and am not sure of a good homeopathic Dr., so if anyone knows of one, that would be greatly appreciated as well. Thank you in advance.

Hi. Thank you for such a quick response. Now- he has had some sleep apnea and has been sneaking food he is allergic to. Main complaint right now is congestion, nasal sound, sounds like adenoids still enlarged and behavior believed to be resulting from the lack of good sleep - also think he is not growing as well as should be height wise - physical not until May, but has steadily dropped % wise on growth chart through the years. Wanting to elevate head to sleep. Stools have been, I believe, normal. He is an on the go eater. Wants to pick at things, never has been one to just sit down well for a meal. Could not smell anything until we started strict diet. Does not drink well. Always wants juice, not water. Try to encourage the water, but know he needs fluids. Grinds teeth (but that does run in the family). Top teeth are ground down. Strict diet makes sleep apnea much less, but still have nasal talk. Does not seem to have problem running around and breathing. Oh, he does get a small little rash under the right side of his mouth at times - seems to be after eating certain things but I haven't figured out what yet. Also have noticed small raised bumps on chest and back - can't see, just feel- pin head size or smaller. Also, skin just above nail bed on fingers always almost like hangnail type skin and red. Does not complain about this. Thank you.

I am not sure when he grinds his teeth. He mouth breathes at night so I don't think it is then. Maybe during day? I has seen him grind just a few times during the day. I was thinking too, he does not want to be covered at night, very rarely does he want covers on. He seems to always be congested but less when strict on diet. The nose runs mostly when strays from diet. Only runs during the day time, otherwise just can hear the congestion at night. Usually starts when exposed to something and is clear runny then seems to change into yellow, green, etc. in days to follow. The other day snot seemed to be frothy white but then went away the next day. The rash under his mouth is about half way between his mouth and chin and is a couple of red bumps on the right side. Thank you so much for responding again.

Just thought about something else. The snot usually does not iritate the skin under his nose. Also, he is blonde headed, fair skin, and blue eyes. Thank you.

He also has a ear wax build up that we have to flush out about every 3 weeks.

He very rarely wants covers. He wears PJs and we do live in Florida, but usually does not want covers, especially in the middle of the night even if it is chilly in the house. I can sometimes put them on to tuck him in but they are off shortly after. As far as congestion - he always speaks with a strong nasal sound. People have a hard time understanding him due to nasal sounds - so maybe not congestion, maybe just adenoids enlarged, but if exposed to allergy food his nose starts to run, also if he starts crying. As far as complaints, he really doesn't complain he just goes and gets a tissue (or more likely, wipes his nose on his shirt). He does have a very short temper and gets upset sometimes when people can't understand him and when he can't eat something.

He usually sleeps with head tilted as far back as humanly possible if lying on side. I have started propping him on two pillows and he does not have to push his head all the way back. He does not snore. Just sounds like Darth Vader and has the intermittent sleep apnea. He currently goes to bed in his bed at about 7pm (mattress and pillow covered with dust mite covers) with two pillows to raise his head. One I put a little lower than his head to raise the shoulders. Many nights I use Vicks vapor rub and it does help significantly to make his apnea less. He usally makes it in his bed until about midnight and then moves into ours (if he doesn't move before I go to bed, I will usually move him so I can hear him throughout the night). He then sleeps with his head completely tilted back or tries to prop his back and head up on my back. He breathes better this way. He will usually sleep until 6:30 to 7:30. He typically wakes up happy and ready to move. If he has had a really bad night with the apnea he is really moody and we can predict a really bad day temper wise. As far as supplements, I have had a very difficult time finding a multi vitamin without any of the allergens in it. Luckily, he swallows pills like a champ. I am giving him off and on Nature's Plus - Source of Life - Multi-Vitamin and mineral supplement with whole food concentrates. This is an adult product and the serving size is supposed to be 6 tablets - I give him 2. He also gets Biotics Research Corp. brand supplements based on the CRA exam -Basic Nine - his hair analysis did show significant lack of many of these trace minerals -(Selenium, Chromium, Molybdenum, Lithium, Rubidium, Silicon, Vanadium, Superoxide dismutase, Catalase), L-glutamine, thyrostim, and molybdenum. I have given him powder acidophilus in the past but am currently giving him keifer (the powder kind you make, but I mix it with 100%juice because he is allergic to milk). I haven't noticed much. Have tried chinese herbs in the past for sinus infections, and general infections but did not help.
One note, he was wetting the bed after starting the basic nine and molybdenum so the Chiro. did the CRA again and found he needed the thyrostim and since that he has not really wet the bed.
Thank you. Hope this helps clarify.

u mention '..really has not wet the bed...'---this meaning is not clear--never wets bed at al past month ?hoiw uch wet the bed past month?(if can remeber) what dates?times?..etccircumstances-it is good not e to keep diary of what u obseve from this point--list all u notice--uncomon things --little things (seeingly) unrelated..etc---that way ties and dates will be fresh at hand as facts not maybes stored in memory some where..

OK. Will try to keep diary. This is exhausting! I think he wet the bed once since started on the thyrostim. It was early morning, about 5:30 or 6am. Think he may have had a lot to drink the day before.

Someone please HELP!! Seeing as I have been dealing with this for years and now am trying to keep a 5 year old on a very restricted diet, yes my patience is getting very low. I am trying to get some answers but feel like everywhere I go I get the runaround. I am looking for serious answers and need to implement them not just waste my time. I have a family to raise and other stressors on top of that. If you can seriously help I will answer questions. Can you try to ask whatever you need though so it doesn't become more drawn out. Thank you.

Hi - I know from the date it's been a while so I'm not sure if you are still checking this forum... but I'm hoping so! My son is now 15 months and the issues I'm having with him are extremely similar to your son's. I'm wondering if you ever got any answers or help?? How is he doing now?
