Toddler ear infection

My daughter is 2 years + 2 mnths old. she had a chest infection three weeks ago, 3 days after she had finished antibiotics for this and was feeling better, she began to develop a fever , around 102f and was off her food. She had a fever for 3/4 days with no other obvious symptoms, except one bout of mild diarhoea. Yesterday ( a week after the fever) she complained of pain in her ear at bed time and would not go to sleep, i gave her some paracetamol. I took her to the doctor this morning to check for an ear infection, the doctor looked in her ear and said she couldn't really see much because of wax in the way. When i got home i saw in her bed some yellowish marks on the bedsheets at the head end, and a dark orange, hard crusty piece of something. it makes me think more that she has an ear infection. the doctor just told me to give her paracetamol for the pain. is there anything i can do? how long do these things take to heal? and has the doctors advice been right?
