Over-Active Bladder and Short Menses Cycle?

Hello. I am a 44 year old female with an overactive bladder and a menses cycle that is getting shorter each month.

Re the overactive bladder: When I 'get the signal' that I need to urinate, I have about 30 seconds to get to the bathroom. I seem to have lost all muscle control over my bladder and urethra. When I cough or sneeze, I will leak.

Re the shorter menses cycle: In the past year, I have gone from a 25-28 day cycle, to a 21-23 day cycle. The first day of my period is fairly normal. The second and third days are very very heavy. Sometimes the blood is cherry red, and sometimes very dark and clotty. I have been experiencing more cramping, backache, belly ache and headaches with these changes.

Help? Please?

Thanks!

Wow - okay. Lots of questions . . . lots of answers.

1. Describe your main suffering? It's a lack of control, the sensation that I can't control my body's functions. I worry if I sneeze or cough that I will lose control of my bladder. I seem to always be suffering PMS or period symptoms. I feel exhausted all the time. My body feels alien to me.

2. What other physical sufferings do you have in your body? I'm currently experiencing constipation and severe allergies (however, I'm surrounded by fires in Southern California, so that is probably the cause). The constipation is very uncomfortable and adds to the 'alien' feeling. It feels like there is a lot of waste in my bowels that isn't moving. It also feels like I am not digesting food properly. I also have very itchy eyes - the inner corners, tear ducts, and lash line get itchy, usually in the evening.

3. What mental sufferings / feelings do you have associated with your physical sufferings? Exhaustion, sadness, alienation (from my body), irritation, crankiness.

4. What exactly do you feel when you are at your worst? Describe the sensation in your own words. For the bladder issue: I feel the worst when I feel like I'm about to, or have just, lost control of my bladder. Even if it's a driblet when I sneeze, it still feels humiliating. For the periods: I feel the worst during the 2nd and 3rd days, when the flow is the heaviest and it feels like someone is beating the heck out of me.

5. When did it all start? Can you connect it to any past event or disease? For the bladder: this has been getting progressively worse over the past 7 years. Quite honestly, although I'm a little embarrassed to say this, it started after I had a particularly strong g-spot orgasm. (blushing furiously). For the periods: in the past year, the time between periods has been getting shorter. I'm now at 21 days apart.

6. Which time of the day you are worst? Morning (4-7 a.m.) and evening (6-9 p.m.).

7. What are the things which aggravate your suffering and which are those which ameliorate the same? Example- time, temperature, pressure, rubbing, washing, eating, tight clothing etc. For the bladder: It seems to be no time between getting the signal that I need to urinate and the time I get to the bathroom. I have not noticed that there are any things that aggravate or alleviate that. For the period: I want warmth (heating pad or hot water bottle) on my belly and lower back, but fresh and cool air everywhere else. Eating is usually not good or welcome, as my belly will be very unhappy.

8. Do your think your sufferings have relation to any external stimuli (like, change of place) or any internal biological changes in the body, like, menses (in females)? I don't believe so.

9. When do you feel better, during hot weather or cold weather, humid or dry weather? I feel better in cooler weather. I feel uncomfortable in hot and/or dry weather. A light rainy day is a perfect example of when I feel better.

10. Describe your general mental set up? Are you Moody, Arrogant, Mild, Agreeable Changeable, Nervous, Suspicious, Easily offended, Quiet, Arguing, Irritating, Lazy etc. All of the above?!?! Primarily irritable, chattering mind, restless, exhausted, easily worried (particularly that someone is trying to break into my home), argumentative, testy.

- How do you feel before or during a thunderstorm? I love thunderstorms! I love the anticipation of their arrival. I love the smell, the sound, the feel of them. As long as they aren't destructive, thunderstorms are my favorite form of weather!

- Do you like being consoled during your tough times? I want to be consoled, but if someone tries, I resist. I get wiggly and uncomfortable after a few seconds of consoling.
- Are you sensitive to external stimuli like smell, noise, light etc? Yes, my sense of smell, sound and taste go into overdrive on many occasions.

- Do you have any typical habit or gesture like nail biting, causeless
Weeping, talking to one self etc? If nervous, I will pick at my cuticles. I talk to myself a lot (more than I would like to admit).

- How do you feel about your friends, family, your children and especially your husband / wife? I love my friends and family, yet do not want to spend a lot of time with them. I find that I like to spend small amounts of time with people and then retreat home to be by myself. I am not married and have no children.

11. What are your fears and do you dream of any situation repeatedly? I fear losing control, not being able to take care of myself, being trapped (in an elevator, a car, a house, a room), drowning, falling (from any height). I seem to have semi-frequent dreams about being invaded (someone breaking into my house).

12. What do you crave for in food items and what are your aversions? I crave fatty, sweet, starchy food, but they generally only taste good and feel terribly once in my belly. I do not have a taste for bitter or super astringent foods. My favorite 'comfort' food when I am ill is tomato soup and a grilled cheese sandwich.

13. How is your thirst: Less, Normal or Excessive? Normal to excessive. I like to have something to drink nearby. I don't always drink it, but I like to know it's there.

14. How is your hunger: Less, Normal or Excessive? Normal to low. I will sometimes eat even if I'm not hungry, but a certain amount of time has passed (4-5 hours) and I feel like I should eat.

15. Is there any kind of food which your body can’t stand? Nothing I reject totally, but foods I have no desire to try include organ meats (liver, kidneys, etc). I don't like food that is too slippery (puddings, Jello), unless it has some texture (like rice pudding).

16. Is your sweat normal or less or more? Where does it sweat more: Head, Trunk or Limbs? Above normal - trunk mostly. Sometimes my hands and feet are sweaty. If it is hot, my head will sweat.

17. How is your bowel movement and stool type? Right now, I am constipated. I feel like I am straining too much for little result. Stool is generally soft, but poorly formed. I feel like there is a lot of waste in my bowels.

18. How well do you sleep? Do you have a particular posture of sleeping? I sleep okay, but not great. I start out on my back, but end up on either side (no preference). I tend to wake up between 5 and 7 a.m., which is usually before I need to wake up.

19. Do you think you are able to satisfy your sexual desires in general? Generally, yes.

20. Do you have any strange, peculiar or unusual symptom or feelings? How are you different from others? I feel like I'm inhabiting a body that isn't mine. I feel less attached to the world and people than others seem to feel. I desparately want to be loved, yet have a very difficult time opening up to others.

21. What medications have been taken earlier by you to treat the diseases and do you have any particular symptom surfacing after the medication? I took Lexapro (anti-anxiety-anti-depressant) from January 2008 to June 2008. I thought I was having a heart attack in January -- turned out to be a massive anxiety attack. The Lexapro gave me a sense of euphoria, but further disconnected me from myself and others, so I weaned off of it. I also gained a lot of weight while on the drug (20 pounds in 2 weeks and 50 pounds total). Other than this, I have taken antibiotics several times in my life, and birth control for a stretch in my 20's and again in my 30's.

22. What major diseases are running in your family? Heart attacks, strokes, adult diabetes, high cholesterol, cancer.

23. Describe, how do you look like? Describe your overall appearance.
(For Females) I am tall, carrying my extra weight in my belly and hips. I have light brown hair, blue-green eyes, a fair complexion (my skin is one of the only things I truly am proud of). I'm pretty. I wear a lot of black.

24. If your menstrual cycles are not normal, please describe the irregularities, like pains, moods, flow type, clots etc. My PMS starts 5-7 days before my cycle, with extended headaches, grumpiness, and lower backaches. I can very very irritably as well. During my period, I feel beat up, exhausted, achy. The 2nd and 3rd days are the heaviest, with the more clots. Some cycles are lighter with cherry red blood and little clotting. Others are dark and heavy with a lot of clotting.

25. What major diseases have you had in your life and when. Please write them in a chronological manner.
Pneumonia at 6 months and 5 years (was in the hospital both times in oxygen tents). Tonsils removed at 5 years. Lots of bronchial infections. No other major diseases.

Thank you for your time and assistance!
