Ammonium urate stones tend to form in urine that is too acidic.
It also tends to form in pets with liver disease due to improper metabolism of ammonia to urea. This causes excess uric levels in the bloodstream. The kidneys filter out this excess uric acid in the production of urine thereby increasing the level of uric acid in the bladder. The excess ammonia from the liver problem can also build up in the urine in the bladder. The ammonia and uric acid combine to form an ammonium urate bladder stone. Some pets who have ammonium urate bladder stones may also have dilute urine.
A food called Hills U/D should be used. It is low in purines(which a high meat diet has), and has restricted protein. There is also a medication called Allopurinol which helps to minimize the amount of uric acid in the urine.
Silicea 6X- 2-3 pellets dissolved under the tongue several times a day, as well as adding a couple of tablespoons of canned pumpkin(no spices)to some canned pet food will also help to remove uric acid from the blood and urine.
Adding 30-40 percent filtered water(check the ph level of your water supply, because this can alter the ph balance in the urine)to the diet(90 percent canned/10 percent dry) will help any further urate crystals to flush out of the bladder before they can form stones.
Care must be taken that your cat is able to urinate because these stones can block the urinary tract causing all urine flow to back up, eventually poisoning the cat with toxic buildup.Your cat should also be under no stress.
There is something called gravelroot tincture. It will cause stones to soften, thereby aiding in their transit from the bladder. It will also help to relax the ureter allowing the stone to pass more easily. Approx 7-10 drops or so, three times a day.
Also, there is a Bach Flower Essence(available at any health food store) called Crab apple. Non-toxic. 10 drops or so, four to five times a day or more will aid in expulsion of the stone and any urate crystals. No food or water for at least one hour after administering.
