18 month old boy with green goopy eyes and fever

My 18 month old son has had an intermittant fever and cold for the past 8 days. The fever appeared to be getting better except that every morning, and after naps he would wake up with his eyes glued shut with greeny yellow crusty mucus. I have been washing his eyes with warm water and soothing him with baths. I tried to give him pulsatilla 30x because of the green mucus (he also had thick green snotty mucus, intermittantly clear and watery, from his nose). Throughout the day there is a constant watery with thick green or yellow globs coming out of his eyes as well. I did not notice a significant improvement with pulsatilla.

In the past 24 hours, the fever has gotten worse and he has become lethargic. He wants to be continually held, and is irritable. His tongue, which was and usually is clear has become a whitish color with dark spots. His head is very hot, but his hands and feet are cool to touch. We went to the hospital and they prescribed Tylenol (which perks him up quite well for 4 hours) and an antibiotic ointment for his eyes. However, this does nothing for his lethargy - this normally very active, highly engaging young boy is now lying down, not moving, sleeping on and off and sucking his thumb continually. He also seems to be 'jumping' a lot in his sleep - like a falling dream and then going right back to sleep.

He does have some appetite and will eat and drink at mealtimes - though not as much as usual. Generally, he has a very big appetite, but a slender figure. Right now he seems to prefer warm and/or sweet drinks as opposed to water.

He was tested for a Urinary Tract Infection which came back negative - but has had one in the past (at 2 months old) and ended up in the hospital for one week with antibiotic injections (broke my heart - I did not want to give my infant son antibiotics!)

I am wondering if you have any suggestions. I have a kit of homeopathic remedies and live in a remote area, so if you suggest an 'unusual' remedy I will have to special order it from somewhere else and have it shipped.

Thank you.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Still waiting for reply - looks like things are busy on this site.

Update: My son has been up roughly every 2 hours (currently 3:30 a.m. here) with an involuntary choking cough - can't seem to expectorate mucous - should I give him Ant Tart? or Ipecec? I end up walking around pounding his little back until he can catch his breath again. Also - his breathing is quite rapid - not his normal deep sleeping breathing. I have not given him any Tylenol as the fever is pretty low and I tend to believe that it is there for a reason for fevers. While he is sleeping there is a crackling noise in his head - it sounds like he is clicking his teeth, but he is not moving his jaw.

Thank you - I would like to hear what you recommend.

I am busy at present so cannot review your full summary, but i think should continue with Ipecac.

If been regular in responding, I would like to care your baby very much.

Thank you for your reply - I have not yet given him anything as he is currently sleeping. I will wait until he wakes up. Should I wait and see if he still has trouble expectorating (not sure if that's a word :-) before I give him ipecec? or just give it anyways. I was in a panic when I last wrote as I had just gotten him back down to sleep after a particularily scary episode of 'choking' on mucus.
I am currently going to try and get some more sleep as well. (4 am. now) I will check this forum again in a couple of hours before I give him any remedies.
Thank you.

For acute condition, i am used to know these things must.

The patient is sleepy or not sleepy( one can see usually)
dull or restless (one can see)
thirsty or thirstless (one can offer water and see the response and tell this)
Hot or chilly (putt covering and see this).

ANTIM TART gave best result when smaller air cells are affected while Ipecac when the larger one.

I am used to try first Ipecac as entry should be open for smaller one.

Thank you again -

I gave him Ipepac upon waking this morning and he was active and fever gone afterwards. That was about an hour and a bit ago. Since then he has eaten (albeit mostly chocolate which his sisters gave him - it is Easter morning) and a real egg. He has had some herbal tea and a little goat milk which he asked for. He is active and alert and I am unconcerned now, except that he has a forced cough where he vomited up alot of phlemgm (not the chocolate) this was about 15 minutes ago - it is now 9:30 am.

How often should I give him ipecac?

Yesterday, his fever was gone in the morning and returned with a vengence around 10:30am when he became sleepy, dull, would drink if offered, and would not refuse covering - he was completely indifferent. If this happens again, what do you suggest?

Also - this morning his eyes are far less goopy, we have applied the hospital-prescribed ointment once yesterday and are planning to again today.

I really appreciate your opinion. Thank you.

Once antibiotics are started and there is definite infection then one should have to complete the full course of antibiotics to avoid developing resistance by the bacteria.

Regarding Ipecac you should gave him three times a day if there is phlegm in this chest.

It looses the phlegm and helps its expulsion.

You should also gave him some warm water to drink.

Try to give him light food unless he is completely okay.

Dr. Rakesh Km Lko last decade
My son is not getting better. He does not seem to have any phlegm in his chest, but will cough so hard that he vomits. The cough is not a deep throated cough - but more of a gagging/choking cough. I suspect the mucous is more in his head and sinuses. His appetite is getting less, he has refused to eat or drink very much all day Monday. He is losing weight and very lethargic and weak. He smiles very little now. The green 'goop' in his eyes is no longer as bad, although still minimally present - we have been applying the antibiotic ointment prescribed at the hospital on Saturday.

When he awakes in the morning his fever is gone and he has a little energy until around 10:30 am when the fever and lethargy return and he wants to be held by mom or dad, wrapped in a blanket for the rest of the day. He sleeps intermittantly all day. (This has been his pattern for the past 4 days). While he is sleeping, his breathing is shallow and I suspect he may have a sore throat. His glands feel like they may be swollen (it's hard to tell on such a little guy). He likes to be covered, his head is hot but the rest of his body is cool and he gets chilled (goosebumps) when uncovered.

I appreciate your time in giving this advice. I also would welcome other Dr's opinions and confirmation as to which remedies I could give my young son. I understand has been busy over this holiday/long weekend. Thank you.

Also - if you have any suggestions for his Mom who is losing sleep and anxious over all this? I'm 26 weeks pregnant and finding myself awake each night quite wound up over all this.

Thanks.

jessboy last decade
You should gave him ANTIM TART 30c 2-3 granules in pure one glass of water and gave one teaspoon from it one hourly and also gave him Ferrum Phos 6x 3-4 tablets in lukewarm water three times a day. Post reply every 6 hours or morning, afternoon and late night

Dr. Rakesh Km Lko last decade
Thank you - I will try.

jessboy last decade
I have no Ferrum Phos. Is there another similar remedy? I live in a remote area where it would take a number of days to have shipped out to me. I have the 'Helios Homeopathy 36 Remedies' kit less Aconite and Apis (they are all used up). they are all 30c I have Belladonna and Gelsemium.

jessboy last decade
I've given him the ANTIM TART only as I'm not sure which other remedy to try (see last post). He no longer trusts me with spoons of anything and fights me - which is a good sign he is starting to feel better! He is now smiling again, a little more active, and 'himself' although he is weak and can't do activities yet that have been normal - like climb up onto a chair. His appetite is still very low but he is eating a little. Yesterday he didn't want to eat or drink very much.

His nose is still running a lot. It is mostly clear, but still some thick yellow/green mixed in. His nose is starting to get red and raw where it is always running. He is still quite fussy.

What do you advise now? I am continuing with the Antim Tart.

I am back on forum after 12 hours so i am unable to know when do you actually post your last reply and what is your son present condition.

Please mention your city and then local time whenever you post.

Ferrum Phos 6x, 12x, or 30c should have in the kit.

Do you have Bromium in your kit?

We live in a small village on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. The nearest city is a 2 hour drive from here. Our local pharmacy carries Arnica only and a few Hylands mix brands of homeopathic remedies (ie: sleep problems, car sickness, etc) so remedies are difficult to obtain without special mail order.

My son's energy levels are much better and the fever seemed to be down last night. It is hard to tell right now, because mornings seem to be the time when the fever goes down and then it returns around 10:30 am. His coughing seems to be worse - deeper in his chest and he has a hard time catching his breath between coughing - even turns a little blue in the lips but not croupy. I noticed last night that he is coughing up some blood!? So, on one hand has been doing better - smiling, walking around, ripping books off of the shelves - and on the other he is up a lot in the night coughing so hard he can't catch his breath - seems worse lying down than upright. He also has diarrhea He is thirst-less. Would hardly drink anything all day yesterday. Preferred warm herbal tea - did not want water. He has had diarrhea since yesterday.

Here is the list of remedies I have in my personal kit. All 30c.

Aconite (empty)
Ant Tart
Apis (empty)
arg nit
Arnica
Arsenicum
Belladonna
Bryonia
Calendula
Calc Carb
Cantharis
Carbo Veg
Chamomilla
China
Drosera
Gelsemium
Hepar Sulp
Hypericum
Ignatia
Ipecacuanha
Kali Bich
Lachesis
Ledum
Lycopodium
Mag Phos
Merc Viv
Natrum Mur
Nux Vomica
Pulsatilla
Phosphorus
Rhus Tox
Ruta
Sepia
Silica
Staphisagria
Sulphur

Honesty, at this stage, due to the inconsistency in response, I am so tempted to take him to the local doctor and get him on antibiotics or some other allopathic medicine - however, I have seen homeopathic medicine work at it's best and I have such faith in it.

Eagerly waiting your reply.

It is difficult for you as he is doing better on one side and not on other side as well as to me to advise you. I am reviewing your son case from starting as he certainly needs a constitutinal medicine so visit this form after about 1 hour

I visited this forum at least 12 time from my last visit and my last visit was about 30 minutes and i could not found your response there.

Dr. Rakesh Km Lko last decade
Thank you! I will check back often.

jessboy last decade
If he is chilly i.e. offer him covering and if it is okay for him then give him Ipecac 30c 2-3 granules at 10 minute interval three times.

If he is hot (desire cold) then Gave him Puls 30C as above.

What is temperature and whethre there?.

As it is now about 8 days with fever you should get a checkup of him.

I do not have idea about local epidemics so there may be an parasite induced fever like illness.

So get a check-up to make sure nothing serious is there and continue homoeopathic as well.

Describe her all symptoms while posting i.e.
runny ++
lethargy +
cough++
fever ++
difficult breathing+
stool X2
dull+
thirstless+
since last visit.

Dr. Rakesh Km Lko last decade
Thanks again - I will get him checked out. That's probably the best thing - I wish you could see him personally.

10:30 am
His fever is gone now. We have a cool temperate climate - 12C right now and that's average temp for now. We live in a rainforest so it is very damp and rainy most of the time although it's been sunny the last few days, cloudy today.
He's not hot - energy and curiosity levels are back up. He's got a bad cough that produced blood last night. I can't tell if he is still coughing up blood because most of the time he swallows it. It's difficult to get an 18 month old to understand and listen to 'spit it out'.

Other symptoms:
runny nose +++
lethargy +
cough ++
fever nil
difficult breathing while coughing - can't catch breath (at night so far)
stool x2 very loose today
dull +
thirstless ++
clingy (wants to be held) +

I think that's it for now. Pulsatilla and Ipecac did not seem to make significant difference last week. Ant Tart seemed to be more effective.

Will post again in afternoon - and see what doctor advises.

Thank you.

IC,

I am from India so i could not see your son, but i definately would like to guide you for your son health.

So it is time to have fever him if he has no fever then it good.

Ipecac is indicated, give it before night it would certainly help.

What about his eye symptoms?

It is 11:45 pm here so there is 12 hour time difference, which can cause delayed response.

I would catch your post after 8 hours,which will be there 7 pm.

Wishing good health for your son.

5:50pm PST

My son is doing much better today - there has been no fever and he is back to making our house a mess :-) ...which means he is feeling better. We have seen the doctor and the doctor suspects the blood was from inflamation and irritation from a viral infection in his throat. He simply sent us home with instructions to give Ibuprofin (brand: Motrin) to relieve inflammation and offer pain relief.

My son is still coughing a terrible cough, but the fever is gone today and his eyes have cleared up with the antibiotic ointment which was prescribed last weekend.

Other symptoms:
runny nose ++
lethargy +
cough ++
fever nil
difficult breathing (will see how it is tonight)
stool (no more since a.m.)
dull +
thirstless ++
clingy (wants to be held) +

I will give him Ipecac before bed tonight as you suggested. Shall I give hime 2-3 granules at 10 minute intervals as you suggested above?

I will check the forum tonight before we go to bed. Thank you for taking the time to help us. Now that I know my son is alright - I will have to ask you for remedies for me to recover... haha.

Update: My son still has diarrhea --- if that makes any difference.

Also - above it looks like I wrote -12C for our temperature, but it is actually +12C.

No any medication right now.

Let us see fever which has tended to come in the forenoon.

Describe his runny nose?
which time it is worse?
What causes worsening of this?
which time is better.
What causes this better.
Discharge
watery, think, think, yellow, etc.,.

Here is 10:30 pm so i would be able to answer after 9 hours.

He should do well, but you should avoid him from exposure to cold winds.
