BoooBooo : Osteoporosis And Women
Osteoporosis refers to a disease, wherein the bones become fragile and more likely to break. If not prevented or if left untreated, osteoporosis can progress painlessly until a bone breaks. These broken bones, also known as fractures, occur typically in the hip, spine, and wrist. In a condition like this, any bone can be affected, but bones that are of special concern are fractures of the hip and spine. A hip fracture almost always requires hospitalization and major surgery. It can impair a person's ability to walk unassisted and may cause prolonged or permanent disability or even death. Spinal or vertebral fractures also have serious consequences, including loss of height, severe back pain, and deformity.
Understanding the causes and preventive measures
Osteoporosis is typically a bone disease wherein the amount or density of the bone gets decreased and the structural integrity of trabecular bone is impaired. Cortical bone becomes more porous and thinner with time. This makes the bone weaker and more likely to fracture. The extent of Osteoporosis can measured on the basis of bone density. Using standardized bone density measurements of the total hip, the 'normal' bone is greater than 833 mg/cm2.
Osteoporosis is more common today than it should be. Although we don't know how to completely stop the bone loss, we can take steps to prevent many of the fractures. The prevention starts in childhood, with good nutrition and exercise. Adequate quantities of Calcuim and Vitamin A,C,D and E are equally important. Fall prevention is especially important in the elderly. There are many medical papers that focus on medications to be administered for reducing the rate of bone loss. Most articles lay emphasis on, stress and life-style issues such as diet and exercise. However, what's most important to note that a combination of diet and exercise is what forms the prevention of fractures even more stable.
Sometimes doctors and their patients just want to take a medication for osteoporosis, without paying attention to these basic building blocks. The medications will not be as effective if there is inadequate calcium, exercise, or nutrition. Calcium carbonate in these cases is the most efficient source of calcium and also the least expensive.
If a supplement is prescribed, then it should be one with good dissolution. Chewable tablets are a safe bet. TUMS (or generic chewable calcium carbonate) would also be another important recommendation as it also is the most because economical form of calcium carbonate. Because calcium is absorbed better with food, it should be given with meals. Also, calcium carbonate is an antacid, and it causes a rebound gastric acidity when given on an empty stomach. The best bet for you would be to have it in a combination with vitamin E after dinner at night, as it induces good sleep as well.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
As you may know, Osteoporosis is a disease that makes bones become brittle and more porous. One in four Canadian women over 50 have osteoporosis.
I'm here on behalf of Novartis for their new Osteoporosis Awareness campaign, On the Go Women, which aims to educate women on the disease and stresses the importance of managing the condition with treatment and a healthy lifestyle.
There are many factors that determine whether a woman is at risk of Osteoporosis. Weve developed an Osteoporosis risk assessment tool for you to use and share. At this link youll also find a Personalized Conversation Starter to use when discussing Osteoporosis with your doctor.
These tools are invaluable health resources for any women even if they arent at a high risk for Osteoporosis themselves, they can be shared with mothers, sisters and friends who are.
Weve also collected some recipes for Osteoporosis-fighting foods that might be of interest as well!

Dear BoooBooo,
It is great of you to have started this topic.
I have special interest in this coz my mother is a patient of Osteoporosis.
I have recommended Symphytum to many many patients who have had fractures with remarkable bone joining at a rapid pace. It has surprised many surgeons who did the plastering of the limb for those patients.
Do you think ...we can ...recommend Symphytum to Osteoporosis patients.
Kindly share more of your valuable thoughts on this subject.
Best regards,
Punkaj Varma

NEW DELHI: The Times Foundation and Indraprastha Apollo Hospital organized a Wellness workshop on Thursday to observe the World Osteoporosis Day. Hundreds of people participated in the workshop aimed at spreading awareness about the importance of healthy bones. Around 250 people got themselves scanned for bone-related deficiencies and sought expert advice.
Senior doctors of Apollo hospital including Dr C M Batra, senior consultant, endocrinology, Dr Shakti Bhan Khanna, senior consultant gynaecology and Dr Harsh Bhargava, senior consultant orthopaedics were present for consultation and public discussion. They spoke on various aspects to osteoporosis, treatment and diagnosis and effect of osteoporosis on post-menopausal women.
Dr Bhargava said that due to change in lifestyle, lack of exposure to sunlight and certain vitamins and minerals, more and more people are suffering from weakness in bones. 'The cases of osteoporosis a skeletal disorder of low bone density has increased significantly. This is due to lack of Vitamin D and calcium-rich diets. Smoking, excessive drinking and intake of steroids adds to the problem,'' said Dr Bhargava.
Endocrinologist Dr Batra said people at risk for bone-related diseases should take calcium rich diet including milk, cheese, citrus fruits, eggs and fish. They should also expose themselves to sunlight.
According to Dr Khanna, women are more prone to osteoporosis. 'The risk factors in women include being post-menopausal, being thin or having a small body frame, smoking and an inactive lifestyle. The onset of special bone loss begins in the 20s but it is small till menopause. After menopause, it gets accelerated,'' said Khanna.
Osteoporosis is a major cause of fragility fractures and those at risk are advised to prevent falling by lighting up their houses properly, having grab bars in bathrooms and stairs etc. The treatment of osteoporosis focuses on slowing down and stopping the mineral loss, increasing bone density, preventing fractures and controlling the pain associated with the disease.
'I came here so that my wife can undergo checks for any possible bone strength defect. She always complained of back-ache. I got the tests done on myself and found that even I have mild osteoponia. Now I will be careful and take more calcium rich diet,'' said Alok Nath, a resident of Sarita Vihar, who participated in the workshop.
