i removed alot of my scars caused by microdermabration by sanding down my skin with a nail board. i used to sand my skin around the indented areas till my skin couldnt handle the pain anymore, my skin would scab over and peel off after 8 days or so and each time i did it, i had more and more improvement. those scars are gone now

Davestar, please stop being so rude! It is completely unnecessary.
I agree with the others, you probably are damaging your skin. I used silica and it was amazing, i got quite spotty for a couple of days but then they went and the scars faded.
So please show some respect to the very intelligent people on this site who share their wisdom and help people out of the kindness of their hearts!

i really thanks davestar for giving such briliant idea =D
yes it does really works!
ok just to give ideas to others and precautions before doing this (self microdermabrassion home remedy)
i only recommend this for people who have only mild acne problems! and oily type skin! and white skin complexion (thats the type of my skin) im a chinese.
procedure. you need a scrapper, a nail board will be fine. you only need to scrub it to the scar area. (dont do over scrub) just mild,, just mild ( i dont know how to explain mild scrubbing just dont do over scrub were you will see blood, just mild were you only see are reddish skin, few skin that has been remove) if you see blood STOP IT dont worry the blood is just a warn that it is nearly reaching the inner flesh)it really hurts but i got high pain threshold.
(THE PAIN WILL ONLY TAKE 3 DAYS) then after that you will see brownish skin, then after 5 days you will notice the brownish skin is peeling and voila the new skin is there, smooth and clean. I dont kny why but i didnt get any pimple or acne on my wounds on my face maybe because of the medicine that i putted on my skin.
precaution.
1.make sure you have anti bacterial protection for wound healing (any good quality medicine will do fine) mine is anti bacterial for wound with iodine that makes healnig fast because of the iodine
2.if you are in tropical country like china, where the weather is sometimes very hot and really irritating make sure you always stay in cool place, or infront of your fan/aircon. Take a bath at least 2x day, use lotion [hypo alergenic only] on your face if your skin gets dry because of your frequent bathing and also the skin on your body. Dryness of the skin makes your skin irritated -> base on my experience. Always put the medication every time you finish cleaning your face. to avoid getting infected.
3. of course, you need to do this on your vacation week, were you have no busines to do because your face is like a monster hehe just kiddin, just stay in your house to avoid getting skin infections.
well im really glad my scars were gone now in just 1 month, i got plenty of scars thats why it reach almost 1 month (on cheeks, forehead and nose) all are gone now.
just do it surface by surface, dont OVER SCRUB like what i said! just DO IT SURFACE bY SURFACE! until the scars FADES =)
sorry for my english, i exert effort just to share this self microdermabrassion for the people who cant afford scars removal operation.(like me),
just Do the Proper Medication.

IT WORKS!
i just tried it !!!
hey, im just a teenager from australia and im at home because i woke up and threw a hissy fit because i had a ugly brown scar on the middle of my nose ! erghh..depressing.
sulked for like 10 min, i know im a sook but then i decied to get rid of it myself no matter what it took... and so i found this.
i was worried about getting a bigger scar or bleeding or getting infected but i was desperate to get rid of that ugly scar so yeah... i tried...just 5 min ago. i took my very thin metal nail file, rinsed it in antispetic liquid (detol) and scrubbed (my mom was screaming at me in the backgound). i rubbed for a minute and checked and ITS GONE! its only a bit sore now.. and red. i rubbed detol on it again.
hopefully its not ust an illusion because its all reddy but i seriouslly think it works! took me under 5 min to get this result.
i hope it doesnt come back...
THANKS DAVE! (and sonel)

Lilhopeful-
Is it necessary to rinse the file in antiseptic and can you use a cardboard nail file or must if be metal? Because the metal nail file seems too abbrasive. I have both though.
What sort of scars did you have? Must the scars be raised (rolling etc) for this method to work?
Thank you

hey corgie
i used a metal one and it got pretty stingy but it didnt take long to get rid of the scar though. I really wanted to use a wooden filer, but i couldnt fnd one, i reckon it would work better though, maybe you can try both lightly and see what works best.
The next day i went out in the sun and the spot came back so ... avoid sunlight for a while. The spot just faded eventually.
hope i can be of help

So... I tried a few weeks ago and for the first two times, the scar just came back. (Since it's a deep rolling scar, it's raised)
After a couple more times, the bump went away but that area of skin went a browny color...
I've become extremely depressed about it. And I think it's driven me to some kind of obsessive behavior concerning the scarring which I'm somewhat worried about.
However, this will be the last time I try this treatment and then hopefully the brown skin will just fade.
I can only hope that when I grow older, I'll get rich enough to try something more effective like laser peels or something along those lines!
Thank you for your help nonetheless and wish me luck!

Hey Davestar, wondered how your nose scar is getting on please? I'm very curious because I've got exactly the same problem (indented scar on my nose tip) and I really need to do something about it and I'm seriously considering some dermabrasion; maybe dermatologist or plastic surgeon, maybe DIY.
If anyone else has tried this I'd like to hear from you about your experiences, good or bad, and how it's shaped up a year or 2 down the track.
Cheers

**To Corgie**- I've heard Mederma works wonders for raised scars, but not so much for indented scars, which this scar removal method Davestar suggests is aimed for.
As for indented scars, never do TCA cross of the nose from what others say, as there is a good chance of making the scars a lot worse. TCA cross only works on indented scars everywhere but the nose. This is because the collagen production of the nose is much less than that of other facial areas.
Dermabrasion is probably the best method for removing indented scars on the nose, as it levels out the skin around the scars and probably forces the scars to stretch out a bit giving them a less noticeable appearance.
Just my two cents. I am applying to dental school this year, so I'm not completely ignorant... lol.

Hi Fernanda
The best you can do is relax, and let it heal and fade. I've done the sandpaper thing a couple of times since I posted earlier in the year and while it hasn't helped my scar much, the redness did disappear after a few weeks.
Maybe, just maybe, the scar's a little better but I'm not sure. It's certainly no worse than anything my derm has done to my scars!

Its been 2 years since I read this. This works, I tried it twice the first time failed. And the skin near it bled, left me with a line scar barely noticeable.
The first time I did it too harshly and was trying to get rid of it all at once. This is a follow up process that has to be done in several sessions.
You have to sand it down very gently with the file (I use metal file). Then use aloe vera or vitamin E, I use vitamin E.
You should see a difference after the 3rd, 4th time and almost completely gone on the 7th depending how deep the scar is.
Always moisturize never use any drying medication on it.

So I've had pretty bad acne scars for the past 3 years since I had gotten off accutane. Not having acne was great, but the scars were KILLING my self-confidence.
Well, I researched a lot about dermabrasion and how it works as well as how scars tissue forms. Before anyone tries this procedure, I recommend doing a lot of research too.
I am not a doctor yet (in school for it :]) so I cannot recommend anything, but I will let you all know what happened.
I figured the differences between doing the dermabrasion with a doctor and by myself are the expensive cost, the guarantee that it would benefit me, and the fact that the doctor had been trained specially to do it.
Now, I'm not an unintelligent person. I consider myself pretty clever (then again I had to with my scars... I had to find SOME good quality in myself) albeit what some would call insane... I figured that even if I messed up, I could always just end up paying the stupid cost for real dermabrasion.
Right before I started this self-procedure I decided to google 'nail file scars' and came here. Davestar and Sonel's words of wisdom on this subject put the last nail in the coffin and I took an emery board to my face.
I sanded the right side of my face down, half of my right cheek, very lightly to the point where it was raw and a few spots of blood were where the scars used to be.
That was VERY GENTLE. 3:00AM day one.
The healing process began like this. The next day (3:00 PM of the same, first day), where the scars were, my face had brown and red spots. It looked a lot like sunburn. I applied moisturizer and aloe lotion constantly to keep it hydrated and cleaned it well with things that would prevent infection.
3:00 AM of the second day, the spots had begun peeling off and revealing pink, smooth, skin. Now, all the scars were not gone... i'd say roughly around 50-75% better. I can look at myself in the mirror from one side without wanting to vomit due to what I see in the mirror.
3:00PM of the second day, my skin on my face looks healthy and young. The pigmentation slowly turned back into my normal skin color throughout the day.
It was very similar to the healing from a sunburn with the constant peeling.
Now, I credit this all to the fact that I sanded down very gently.
Now for the details of the left side of my face.
I had a lot of deeper scars on the left side of my face so I decided to sand deeper. I used microdermabrasion lotion and then got to work.
My face had not started bleeding, but again there were the pinpricks of blood surfacing where the scars had been.
12 hours later, I continued moisturizing and using aloe vera. The entire side of my face was really red, just as red as I would expect from having a real dermabrasion.
36 hours later, the skin around my deeper scars are flat but very red. I assume the red will disappear just like the other side and leave the smooth, pinkish skin that will slowly return to normal pigmentation. I will keep you all updated.
I feel that I may have went too far and instead of helping my scars more by going farther, I may have just delayed the healing process.
I believe that the best way to do this is the middle ground between dermabrasion you would get at a doctor's office and microdermabrasion. Don't go too deep otherwise the healing process will take longer and your results may not be as good as mine. Just do it gently and over the course of a few months... depending on the severity of your scars.
Remember, this is in place of thousands of dollars worth of procedures from a dermatologist. Don't be too harsh on your skin unless you're crazy like me (and even then you shouldn't).
(Finally, as an addendum, please keep in mind that I am bipolar and that this was at the peak of a manic phase. Any sane person would not try this. People may think you're crazy if you tell them that you took an emery board or a nail file to the face.)
(and as a second addendum, I wrote all of this at one time while skipping around, so if I missed anything, feel free to ask any questions. I will probably be posting with updates.)

It's been over three weeks now, and I have to say that the end result is between 40-50% better than what it was initially.
As others have said before, it may take multiple treatments for a real good and definitive improvement.
Take precautions while doing this. I don't recommend it. I am not a doctor. This is just an explanation of what I did and the results.
I am confident in myself now and don't feel like I need to cover my face with my hair anymore.

Look up Dermarolling and Dermastamping. They're forms of needling.
It breaks up scar tissue easier than this method.
There's lots of information on certain Acne org message boards.

I'm going to start this procedure over again because of the 2 new scars I got from exfoliation (guys dont NOT exfoliate with granulated products)only with liquid types. I will keep you posted on my new procedure.

Theres an improvement on my scar it seems to have gotten smaller and close up quite a bit, but not completely gone yet, I've been sanding it down and using polysporin, honey and ice for 3 days now. I think by next week there will be more improvement.
