Tooth Pain After Filling HELP

I had a filling replaced in an upper molar a couple of weeks back and the dentist needed to drill down significantly and quite close to the nerve to remove the decay. Now I have shooting pain in that tooth especially when drinking anything cool or room temperature. He mentioned that if I was to develop pain that he would need to do a root canal. Is there anything I can take so I can avoid this procedure?
