preventing scar tissue in eye

Please help me help a friend who has just had retinal detatchment surgery. The retina had been detached many years and was not discovered until a cataract was removed. There is probably old scarring and he must prevent new scarring to get as much vision as possible. He is:

kind natured
compassionate
positive thinking
very enthusiastic
very skinny/wirey but strong
very energetic and active
sometimes meek
often doesn't consider his own well-being
likes to please others
