Recurring Cough Attacks

Once-twice a year, I get a cough that "attacks" about once every two hours, for up to three weeks. Starts with a tickle in the throat, which sometimes takes up to 30 min to "cough out." Usually starts after a cold, but this time possibly due to allergies. Very little clear nasal discharge, little mucus coughed up. Cold water relieves attacks a little. Worst laying down, after midnight and early am, but attacks come on suddenly during the day. Cannot sleep more than 2 hours at a time. Conventional meds (syrups, antihistamines) are useless. I'm German, fair, 5'4", athletic. Had this since I was a teenager.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
You have not discussed the time of year or if anything is different...some sort of possible aniversary?

Are you still in the same location and doing the same things? Is it spring? or fall? Were there remarks made as a young person of "oh, it is here again."

These type of reports are helpful.

I had an experience with something like this. I found that I kept repeating the negative statement of having something once or twice a year. "I do it every year." When I stopped "expecting" it to happen, it stopped.

The sub conscious will oblige you with every negative statement you utter. Your body is in this habit now, it may be fulfilling this statement you make when you feel fear of the reoccurance of this particular cough.

Think on this and compare with other influences and tell us what you think.

This is the first time I remember the cough ever happening in the spring. It's usually in the late fall/winter following a cold. A couple of times in the summer. Since my late teens (I'm 40), it has happened 15-20 times. I am afraid it will start as soon as I feel a cold coming on. I sometimes succeed at keeping the cold at bay with home remedies and vitamins, and the cough stays away. I should add that I rarely get sick aside from this.

I seem to suffer from allergies for the first time this year. The cough followed their onset 8 days ago. St. Louis, Missouri, USA is considered "bad," but I never had trouble since moving from Germany 17 years ago.

I've been in the same location, doing the same thing for 12 years. No changes I can think of. My daughter is 3 and very healthy. My husband is supected to have asthma. We are wondering about mold and allergens in our house (bought it and got a dog 7 years ago), but I have coughing fits anywhere.

No remarks as a young person.

Allergies are more of a problem this year after a very wet/snow winter.

We should treat the cold when it begins. Keep us up to date where you "are" in the condition right now.

Begin your report with the very first sign of cold and how it progresses. What about you as a personality. Likes and dislikes, Happy, angry, hidden wishes,

Any old angers from childhood. Hidden anger causes more colds than weather. Emotions cause more colds than weather.

What "kind" of cold, describe symptoms. Do you like your soft cuddly bed? Do you like to sleep through condition, or up and doing for others.

What is the weather like when you feel more prone to get a cold?

Current state after 9 days: cough is more productive, attacks less frequent. Thirst for lots of water. Still wake up every 2 hours after midnight, cough for 20 min. Hoarseness subsided, feel quite clear. In this case, it started with sitting in flying (mostly oak) pollen for 30 min., sneezing, coughing, eyes watering. Sinuses unaffected, but cough started next day. Generally don't feel different because of cold. Mentally unchanged. Sometimes get angry/weepy about coughing when bad at night. Don't feel "prone" to get a cold anytime in particular, but seems to happen when out getting chilled in wet weather, wet hair/cold head in wind/winter.

Colds usually start with sore throat in the evening, swallowing is slightly painful. Day 1: drainage in troat, sinus congestion by day 2. Day 3: green mucus, but no cough yet. Sometimes frequent doses of Vit. C and Echinacea keep cold at bay, it subsides by day 4. If not, cough may start and last 1-3 weeks.

Personality: Outgoing, happy, content, confident, very observent, well liked. Persuasive, good at "selling," usually get what I want. Things seem to "fall into my lap" and I go with them: move, job, opportunities. Not good at taking initiative when it comes to big decisions (see wishes below). Analytical, quick grasp of concepts, enjoy explaining things. Love for math, scientific discoveries. Imaginative and creative (job, life). Like recognition, praise. Good lier, storyteller. Can get nervous (loss of appetite) about important test, pending health diagnosis, events I plan/lead. May have herpes outbreak then, also before menstruating. Need to have things "just right" when my project, party, cooking. Opposite with other's-anything's fine (observe flaws, but they don't matter). Humor: dislike slapstick, like Monty Python, intelligent jokes. Love good food. Love cuddly clothes, nothing tight.

Oddities: Usually feel more chilly than others, in any season. Dislike heavy air conditioning, like to sit by heat source. Averse to air blowing from fans, vents. Constant mechanical noise annoying (buzz, beep, tick). Extremely keen sense of smell. Odors can bother. Very particular about lighting. Seek out sunlit rooms, sunny seat in airplanes, restaurants. Need daylight at work. Love candle light. Bad mood in long stretches of bad weather. Love to make something out of nothing (recycle junk, find things, save leftovers). Save money, buy used rather than new, like bargains, eBay, sometimes stingy.

Hidden wishes: new job or activity (sabbatical?) to fall into my lap after 12 years.

Childhood: No angers, all good memories until age 16: Discovered mother is bipolar, alcoholic. Ongoing (she's in Germany). More a concern, sometimes anger depending on her actions. Can feel superior, act as advisor. Mother-daugher relationship seems reversed for last 10-15 years.
