Awful taste in mouth. Page 2 of 6
This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
I have had these same symptoms and first thought it was GERD. I also had a strange almost buzzing in my ears. I realized that at night I was clenching my teeth (not grinding). The dentist made up an NT device. Take a look at nti-tss dot com slash migraineprevention dot html Worth every penny. Also, a sip and swish of water with a bit of salt throughout the day (and if you wake up at night) helps a tad. 1/8 tsp. salt to 8oz water.

I was listening to a radio program and the host said that antibiotics destroy your digestive system. I went to a health food store and told them that I had a very bad taste in my mouth that continued long after I stopped taking it. It was amoxicillin. It was prescribed for a sinus infection. I have read that a bad taste in the mouth (while taking it) can be one of the side effects. However, months have passed and I have still had the very unpleasant taste in my mouth. The health food store recommended yogurt or a supplement that has the same benefits in a capsule form. She said that I need to re-build intestinal flora. I was a little skeptical but I bought a bottle of the capsules as I wasn't going home right away and the yogurt needs to be refrigerated. I've been taking it a few days and I already notice an improvement. I don't have the bottle with me but it has three letters in the name.

It looks to be a case of lever disfunction.
Kindly have a 'LFT' (Lever Function Test done and then report.

I don't know if this is encouraging, but I was on antibiotics for a sinus infection and the taste went away for a day or too this summer. Nevertheless, it came back during the latter half of my 7-day course and has been as bitter and strong as ever the past two months. I noticed that the symptoms worsen when I'm stressed (as my IBS worsens simultaneously). This taste lasts all day and only goes away briefly when I'm eating. Blood work is normal.
Does anyone know of something that works? I'm about to start trying apple cider vinegar for chronic sinus symptoms

Antibioics have side effects.
You have not been able to identify what type of taste it is except that it is funny.
Is it bad taste like soap, Taste as of putrid flesh with inclination to vomit of any of the one mentioned in the earlier mail?
Unless there is any indication of the type of tste, it is difficult to assess.
How is your appetite?
How is your requirement of water?

Rajendra,
The chronic taste is similar to chlorine (or the way i would imagine it would taste given its horrific smell) and it does make me feel nauseous when it is strongest (which is usually at night). My colonoscopy showed very minor GERD. I have had sinus surgery a year ago but still continue to get postnasal drip. The last issue is that I am always bloated and have IBS symptoms that flare up a few days each week (the taste is more pronounced when the IBS is worse).
I drink 8 glasses of water a day (water tastes bad), and my appetite is never really present but I eat a 3-4 moderately proportioned meals a day.
I'm 21 yrs old
Thanks!

thanks rajendra. i haven't tried China yet. I'm taking a prescription called lamictal for anxiety so i'm not sure if the mix would be good. I'm more concerned about this bitter taste than my anxiety. It gets worse about 30 mins after eating usually but its always present. i'm so frustrated with it.

TO tiyay: Please read! I have had so many sinus surgeries and problems and have this very same problem. I currently have the same symptom you do and it is normally around allergy seasons when I have a major attack. I am going Tuesday to see my ENT because I am having the disgusting (will make you throw up - worse at night when laying down or head tilted) drainage that I can only explain as the taste of pus or infection. It's not normal by any respect. Generally, by the time I have that drainage with yellow/green discharge from blowing my nose, it is already a chronic infection and it takes at least 21 days of a good antibiotic (cipro, biaxin, etc) to completely clear it. One week will will only make symptoms appear to subside, but they come right back. Twenty one days in a row of a good antibiotic will normally do it. I have had some blood when I blow my nose, but the fact that I sneeze up to 16-18 times as day has something to do with that, I am sure. Please get to a doctor that will treat you for a longer period of time. If your stools are not tarry (black) and you are not experiencing lightheadedness, dizziness, numbing of limbs, GERD, than it's probably not acid reflux. Altough, you can absolutely have GERD and not even know it. Please email me if you need any information, I have been going through this for 15 yrs+ and had all the allergy shots for 5 yrs and at least 5-6 sinus surgeries and later had a few because I had MRSA and aspergillus (fungus) in my maxillary sinus. Was on home health care (IV'S) for 16 months total and if I don't know what sinus hell is, than no one does. Also, you must be very careful when mixing homeopathic meds (not FDA regulated) with prescription meds and be sure to notify your pharmacist if any non prescription meds you are taking, even if you do not think it will matter. It does matter. Take care, and feel better. I am in the same boat.

To Sinushell,
Could you please let me know what test was done to determine that you had aspergillus in your sinus cavities. I have had a terrible taste in my mouth for 4 years. Have been to the top diagnostic clinics in the USA, including Mayo clinic and have been unable to get a diagnosis. I think I picked up a fungus while working on a ranch in Arizona but all of the docotrs I have seen disagree with me. I have been to 4 ENT doctors, I have had sinus scans, MRI's, blood work, urine analisys and every test known to mankind! I have even been to a fungus specialist at Mayo Clinic and the only test she did was a tongue scraping. The taste is worse after I eat certain foods. Food still tastes good to me but after I finish eating, the horrible bitter taste comes back. I have even seen gastro doctors and have been told it is not my stomach. I am at a loss and having a very difficult time enduring this horrible taste. I would greatly appreciate any info that you can give me. Thank you so much!!!!!!! PS I have had no problems with my sinuses except for a week just before the bad taste appeared 4 yeears ago.

Tiyah: Hello. The tests were initially done in my ENT office, an outpaitent procedure of sorts. It is what he calls Sinus Lavosh. What it is, in order to get an exact testing to send to labs, he extracts within the sinus itself. It is not pretty, the taste will make you throw up, and it is a little painful the next day with some swelling and bruising. Having said that, it is a great relief that far out weighs any pain. If you are up for it, most of his patients, he says want mild anesthsia, but I only wanted relief. Here is how it's done. With a spinal tap kit, they enter the maxillary sinus (cheek) just about your canine tooth. Then, there is some kind of breaking through the mandibular bone there and the needle continues on to puncture the sinus and when fluid of any kind is present, it is then withdrawn via the spinal tap needle (just as they do with an actual spinal tip. It is sent to lab for testing. Then, he used anywhere from 40-60cc (or ml) of saline to then flush out that cavity, very slowly initially, as the ENT is first uncertain that your sinus (door), as he calls it, is open. The flap that is on either side of the ethmoid sinus, between the eyes. If is is blocked or the saline is not able to then flow from the nasal passage (and some goes down your throat) for the flushing process, it will cause harm. So, he begins very slowly and continues until however much saline is necessary for the fluid to run almost white, or at least yellow. I have had this done several times, twice with the MRSA staph and twice in the opposite maxillary with the fungus. This is very important to note. My doctor was also correct in saying that normally a fungal sinus infection also includes blowing some type of very small particles (or pieces) out when blowing the nose. It was a dark green at first, then it was brown, both times I had one. It is very very sticky in nature and the consistency makes it hard to even blow your nose, so I did not even know it was there, as it was not moving or draining, just spreading. The sinus lavosh is the most exact test directly into the vial and sealed and again. it's not the best thing to ever have done as the spinal tap needles are rather long and the next day, white lines will appear on your cheek where the needle was under the skin there. Just very minor side effect. I can only say that is it far better than the surgery that is done to remove the fungus, once they identify it!! OMG. It is called Caldwell-Luc procedure and they do it through the cheek of your mouth and enter the same way, just big hole and manually scrap the fungus out, as laser does not kill fungus. I think that the first Caldwell-Luc surgery I had, oh boy, I had about 25+ stitches, they cut just to below the nose. Then, the second one I had, both sides done at once and had at least 60 stitches, but many of the stitches were to seal the big opening about the canine tooth on either side. Then, the also stich gum line all the way across the incision, the the stitch the cheek down to the gum line and it will come out by error pretty quickly, but it at least stayed in a couple days. The rest of the stitches are the dissolving kind. It is painful surgery and I still feel scars in my cheeks. It heals amazingly fast. Alot of nerves are also damaged during the incisions along the gum line and the feeling doesn't return for months and months. Hope this helps. Sinuses have also affected my teeth. I had no idea!!

TIYAY: OMG. I also had so much extensive periodontal work done, having almost lost the 3 molars in my upper right quadrant. All 3 teeth were root canaled, the apicoectomy was done, then they still were hurting me all the time. After 2 dentists and an endodontist, I was sent to a Periodontist as all 3 teeth were loose. Even though they were crowned, they were loose. So it was the periodontist that *discovered* a hole in my sinus cavity, as I was having coral reef bone implanys to save my teeth. At the time I was only 33 and did not want to lose my teeth at all! Turned out that the sinus infection that I did not know I had (pre ENT days), had literally eaten a hole in my cavity and the mandibular bone was actually calcified and necrotic and that is what was causing all of those 3 teeth to hurt alot, and not one dentist caught it on panagraphic and all the xrays they took!! Although I will also add that the periodontist surgeon did not know that was the underlying cause either, until just after the bone implant surgery began. He removes many layers of gum tissue, so much so that the tops of the crowns was showing afterward, but that tissue was all infected, so he had to. Then, he discovered the hole. Well, my husband agrred to the additional bone implant to cover that hole or the procedure would not have been successful. Three weeks after the resorbable (?) coral implants, I was sent straight to the ENT to fix the sinus part. I had my first sinus surgery about 8 days later, still had tons of stitches from the implants, but wow, what a relief. I could smell again. No more bad taste. Nothing. i could taste all my food. I had no idea that I could not taste it that well, until I was repaired. Ten grand worth of bone implants, did save the 3 teeth, however 1 still needs to be re-crowned because I am afraid to top part of crown that is exposed, will decay. I also used a rinse called Peridex that helped tons. Rinse every night before bed, nothing to drink. That takes a week or two to start working, but it did the trick. I have used Peridex on 3 occassions and it is by prescription only, but it's worth a shot. Hey, I had 2 different dentists, an endodontist and a periodontist and none of them were able to detect a sinus problem in conjunction with the teeth and the taste in my mouth, being my sinus. Turns out, it was infection that slowly seeps out around the tooth or teeth and it tastes awful. The worst when eating, chewing food or gum, etc. Hope you will find relief soon. I went to Vanderbilt and had 2 other opinions, as per the ins. request, but my ENT was straight on and he was correct all along. I currently am on Levaquin 750 for 3 weeks as I have a sinus infection and although no scans or MRi have been done, I surely hpe I do not ever get another sinus fungus. Different types of infections can mimmick so many problems and/or disease that it is quite hard to discover sinus problem and or fungal sinus as being the culprit. For me, it was just in time to save my damn teeth.

Hi, it's twalls here. I'm new to your site, but have had the same bitter taste in my mouth since June 07. It seemed to start right at hayfever symptoms. My sinuses started drainning and by ragweed season I had a terrible yellow and green issue drainning as well. At first the bitter taste in my mouth was off and on, now its on for the past four months every day. It is so annoying. I have had blood work and cat scans tool. While I do have a deveated septum, I'm nearly 49 and it never gave me any trouble till now. I also show very irritated, dry tissue. I was on Allegra for a couple months. I have switched to Singular, trying to get off of the Advair Inhaler for my asthma. Up until June, I hadn't used an inhaler for three years. I do have Fibromyalgia. I try to eat right, exercise, and most importantly sleep, even if it mean sleep aids because without sleep everything is so much worse. I'm not a cry baby, I try to get up and get on with it, if you know what I mean. The less you do the more you hurt, so I don't let the hurt get me there too often. However, I dare say, this bitter taste in my mouth and the new pain in my dry sinuses is quite challenging. I would welcome anyone who has had success winning this bitter deal and advising the rest of us...PLEASE!
