newborn digestive disorder, bad flatulence. please help

I have a 2.5 week newborn who developed a horrible digestive disorder (aka colic) in his second week. Based on my research and quite a bit of experience treating myself with homeopathy, I tried treating him with Lycopodium 6x dissolved in water, stirred for 15 seconds. The first dose helped a lot with the acute condition at the time: he had been so uncomfortable with gas and straining to poop, which used to coincide with his feeding. He had been twisting like a banana, afraid to eat my breast milk. But, the initial dose of Lycopodium helped.

Then he continued to have some gas, straining a lot when passing gas and pooping. I tried Carbo vegetabilis 6c dilluted in water then stirred vigorously, then the same from the 12th glass, but I saw only minor and very temporary improvement.

Now, for the last 2 or 3 nights, we have the same pattern: about 10-11 pm, he eats. Then he cannot stand being put down to lie on his back. He seems uncomfortable and restless. The flatulence becomes horrible and lasts all night. The only way he becomes comforted is when I hold him, preferably at the breast, or when he east (although sometimes he is clearly hungry because he can't concentrate on eating due to the flatulence).

Last two nights, I gave him Lycopodium 6x, dilluted in water, stirred, and from the 12, and then from the 24th glass. I gave him new doses at night as the previous one seemed to wear off. By the morning last night, the remedy was no longer doing anything.

During the day, he is not suffering, but he is clearly not well rested from the night. He is fussy, wants to be carried and comforted all the time, does not smile--even though he was a smiley, happy baby with more and more waking time before he got the colic!

He is also now very sensitive, easily detaches from the nipple, and then gets frustrated. Cries very easily.

I have been thinking that perhaps he needs a much higher dose of the Lycopodium, infrequent dosage? Or something else?

A side problem has been that somehow I started producing much less milk in the last few days, so he is hungry and not getting full from my breasts. I am trying to remedy this by eating more and the right foods for increased milk supply.

I will greatly appreciate advice. I am in no position right now to go to a homeopath, besides we don't have one in my town...

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
I have prescribed Nat Phos 6x dose 2 tablets after each of 3 meals daily to be taken by mothers who were faced with the problem you have with your baby. The effect of the Nat Phos carries over in the breast milk to the baby and the results should be noticed within a few hours when the baby seems more comfortable.

Nat Phos 6x is absolutely safe to be used in this manner and I would appreciate if you will record the response it has on your baby in 3 days after you start this therapy.

The bonus is that the mother will shed any weight left over from her pregnancy at the rate of 1kg per week.

Thank you for the suggestion. I will let you know how it goes once I buy the remedy. Best wishes.

One note: for now, fingers crossed, a Chinese pediatric formula Grow and Thrive seems to be working. I will keep your suggestion on file in case we need to resort to a new medication. Thank you again for the generous and prompt advice.

Well, the problem continues... My poor baby cannot stand lying down--we have to carry him all the time! This makes for very stressful nights. I have ordered the Nat Phos and will report again as soon as we start using it.

Dear Joe,
sorry to trouble you again. Additional questions: I see on your web site that you also recommend Arnica 30c in addition to Nat Phos 6x in some cases. Should I also use the Arnica for good measure, or start with just the Nat Phos? Also, when do I stop taking the remedy, after the condition is completely cleared? Thank you again.

I have prescribed Nat Phos 6x and Arnica 30c to patients who presented Gastric problems or GERD for many years. The Nat Phos helps to accelerate the passage of food down the gut and thereby prevents the build up of gastric juice with the HCl to reflux up the Esophagus which then causes great discomfort.

In the case of your baby however, I prescribed the Nat Phos 6x to you so that its effects will pass over to your baby who is just 3 weeks old and seems to be having some problem in digesting your breast milk. I have used NP in other cases instead of giving it to the baby as it has always worked to relieve the distress.

In your baby's case I do not think that Arnica would be of use but if you wish to take it yourself on the assumption that it will help your baby, there is nothing to prevent you from doing so. In any case it will not harm your baby.

Dear Joe, to give you an update: the mail order of the remedy was very slow to come (in fact, it still has not arrived), but in the meantime the condition pretty much cleared after I have been on a dairy-free diet for several days. I am also not eating cabbage family vegetables, processed foods, beans, cocoa, chocolate, or citrus fruits. I only have one small coffee a day and close to no sugar. I am quite certain it was the cow diary that was causing the problem. Thank you.

Thank you for your observation on how changing your diet helped baby.

I have never thought of this matter and shall remember it for future patients.

The Nat Phos I prescribed for you has helped many desperate cases and as a last resort I have even prescribed it to be given in very small doses to baby. I have however only given NP for older babies and to the mother for infants of your baby's age.

My best wishes for you and baby.
