Dosage of homeo medicines

I'm just a little confused with how homeo medicines should be administered. For instance, all my symptoms fit calcarea carb. I got it through the Remedy Finder. If I understand correctly, I should start with low doses in the beginning. Does that mean taking a wet dose of 30c or to take a few drops directly.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Potency is selected on an indvidual basis by a practitioner, depending on a variety of factors in a patient's case. Potency relates to intensity of the disease, depth of the problem, the levels of the person affected, and the degree of pathology present in the case (pathology is disease where the tissues of the body have physically changed).

Starting at the wrong potency can do a number of things - it might cause aggravation or side effects, it might have no effect (and therefore cause you to abandon the remedy unnecessarily), it might have only a partial effect.

Dosage also needs to be indiviualised. Dosage has two components - the size of the dose (how much you take each time) and the frequency. Both of these factors need to be fine tuned to get the best result, and mistakes here can cause even more problems than choosing the wrong potency.

Hahnemann warned against using the dry dose, the pillules, when taking multiple doses. Even on the first dose, the pillules are much more likely to aggravate than a liquid dose.

The pillules need to be dissolved into a mixture of water and alcohol, in a small bottle preferably with a dropper. This bottle must be hit firmly against the palm of the hand before each dose (succussion) - this is a vital step for repeating doses. The number of hits will determine the increase in strength of the remedy. Too few and the dose may not work, too many and the dose can be very aggravating.

A single drop is then placed into a new amount of water - the amount of water you use also determines the degree of aggravation from the dose. The water is stirred and a teaspoon taken into the mouth. This constitutes one dose.

Each step can be adjusted depending on the reaction of the patient - number of succussions, number of drops, amount of water, number of teaspoons.

Typically one test dose is given to a new patient to see how they react - they may be ultrasensitive, or they may have physical pathology - both of these situations can cause violent aggravations so they must be treated carefully. Since homoeopathic medicines can reveal the presence of pathology, the patient cannot always tell you themselves that this will happen (the pathology may be undiagnosed, but their reaction can reveal its presence).

Any time there is an aggravation no more doses are given until the aggravation dies down. This also is the case when there are side effects (which may also suggest the remedy is the wrong one). In such cases the size of the dose has to be altered.

If the symptoms change location, homoeopaths have a principle called Direction of Cure which helps us to decide what to do next. Symptoms moving in the wrong way will require a change of prescription, symptoms moving in the right way may require patience or a change of potency. Direction of Cure is actually not very easy to utilize and requires a lot of skill and careful attention.

As you can see dosage is a fairly complex affair, and practitioners must assess and reassess patients to make sure it is being done correctly for them.
