Very painful cough for over a week

Hi, My husband got sick over a week ago with the flu. He got well except for the cough, which has lingered for over a week and doesn't seem to be getting better.

It occurs all day long but he is able to sleep at night. It is painful, non-productive, rattles in the chest and is triggered in the throat like a bubbling sensation.

Any help would be appreciated.
