The ABC Homeopathy Forum

Need help for my 2 yr old w/ recurrent UTIs, 3 antibiotics in one month!

I need help regarding my 2-and-a-half years old daughter, and so far I wasn’t able to locate a homeopath with experience with small children.

A bit more than a month ago, my daughter started to complain about itching in her bottom; I thought it could be pinworms, and gave her a dose of an over-the-counter medicine. But in two days or so, she developed a fever and urinary complaints (enuresis and pain when trying to pee). I took her to a hospital, and the analysis proved that she had an UTI. Doctors immediately prescribed her a large-spectrum antibiotic, which she took for 8 days, but two days after that she was sick again; no fever, but pain and enuresis, and also a very bad-looking vaginal (?) discharge. We went to the hospital again, where they already had a detailed result of her first analysis, indicating that she was infected with Proteus M.. She was then given another antibiotic, and took it for 10 days. At that point, her bottom itching returned, and I gave her a second dose of the pinworm medicine, after checking with her paediatrician. Anyway, and to our despair, soon as the second antibiotic was over, her urinary complaints (and the UTI) returned! And she is now taking a third course of antibiotics, in only a month’s time! I don’t have the result of the urine test yet, so I don’t know if it is the same organism, and thus no-one can say if she is having successive UTI’s or a very hard to cure one. Well, doctors say this is a very dangerous situation in her age, and want me to treat her with a prophylactic antibiotic for at least a few months! Plus, they say she has to undergo some traumatizing exams to sort out the possibility of a morphological urinary defect. She had an ecography when we first went to the hospital, and another one yesterday, and her kidneys had no sign of damage.

I must say I dread antibiotics, and this whole situation is very stressful to us. Then, I begun to think that maybe homeopathy could help us - and also that a homeopath could see her health as a whole. Searching for remedies, I found Tuberculinum. Maybe it wouldn’t be a first choice, but I remembered all other ailments my daughter has since birth, and also the fact that I myself had some childhood diseases that could point to Tuberculinum. She was born with jaundice; had eczema (dry, no itchy, but very bad looking) at 5 months old, and only this year it started to disappear (was better every year); catches colds easily with cold, and with humidity (both this and the eczema get worse with humidity, and just being in a damp room can make her develop cough and a fever). She sometimes develops a persistent conjunctivitis. Sometimes (not often) complains about vertigo (mostly when lying down), and last night woke up due to a “loud noise” nobody else heard; even after waking up, she still jumped with fear once, saying that “the noise was there again” (it wasn’t). She is now a bit pale. Needs to sleep very well, but her nightly sleep is restless, and she wakes almost every night after 3 or 4 a.m. Besides that, she is lively, happy, a very sweet and very intelligent child, loves people, loves talking, is very affectionate and sometimes almost exaggeratingly compassionate. Ah, yes: we recently found that she has a “trigger finger”, and I also wonder if this kind of thing could be related to Tuberculinum (in a trigger finger, the flexor of the thumb gets inflamed and develops a nodule, and the thumb gets stuck in that "trigger" position".

I also read that Tuberculinum was related to chronic cystitis, and to intestinal parasites.

I thought her immunitary system could be a bit down, so I’m giving her probiotics, vitamin C, and will start to give Echinacea too. The say Proteus only develops when the natural defenses are down.

Please, forgive me for any errors or imprecision, but I am Portuguese, not an English speaker. Thank you for your time.

I'm bumping this up. Your English is excellent! I hope someone can help you.

I don’t want to be pushy, but still have hope that someone will answer me… and Bodhitshe, thank you for bumping the thread.

I remembered to say that my daughter (Mariana) has a noticeable amount of hair down her spine, neck and forearms; gets very sad (cries and seems really offended) when reprimanded; loves French fries; has an incredible imagination, and is able to pretend she (and whoever is with her) is someone else during a whole day, correcting us when we make mistakes about our imaginary name and details; fears dogs but, even fearing them, never wants them to be chastised, and keeps saying “poor little dog, don’t put him away”; does the same even with bugs, or fairytale monsters (for instance, fears “the big bad wolf”, but keeps saying, “poor little wolf, he needs company, he could live in our house so he won’t be alone”). She keeps saying she loves her family (me, her father, her granny), and does it every time she sees we are upset, even if not with her. And apologizes a lot; if she screams very laud, soon afterwards she will say, “please excuse me for shutting”. This makes me a bit uncomfortable, because I think such a young child should not apologize that much! She is also very good with drawings, but not with colour; her drawings are very detailed for her age, but also very graphical, she almost never uses colour in large surfaces. And she talks wonderfully, like a 4 yr old child, with a very, very extensive vocabulary. She is always asking for the meaning of new words, and is very curious in general (even wants to know the bones in her body, believe it or not). She is stubborn (for better and for worst) and focused, but gets very upset when incapable of achieving something, like completing a puzzle or tying a knot: her energy seems to lower immediately, she becomes tearful, wants to be held, and looks for a place to lie down with her favourite toy.

Also, she usually reacts psychologically to antibiotics, changing her moods and becoming more impatient, hard to please, and weepy.

Thank you again for your attention…

Dear Silvia,

Reason for few responses is because your daughter's case seems to be a very rare one.But from your second post it appears to me that the remedy Mephitis may suit her.It is a very little known remedy but a very important one.The Mephitis children are unusually bright and extremely imaginative. They like to read comic strip books and stories and are themselves great storytellers. A three year old behaving like as your daughter is doing is very unusual and Mephitis children are the same. You can read up on a very detailed Mephitis case by Mangialavori, one of the foremost contemporary homeopaths. You just search for Mangialavori and Mephitis on google and you will get the case. In case you think that the kid treated by Mephitis is similar to your child, come back again to this forum.

I hope it helps.

Rajivprasad,

Thank you so much for your attempt to help us. I’ve read the Mephitis case, but very few of that child’s characteristics apply to my daughter. It’s true that she learns new things very quickly, and is also a bit bossy with other children, generally children that are older than her; but, apart from a bad odour in the mouth when waking up, and only then, there is no other foul smelling. She never had an ear infection, either, and is not “a turmoil”, even if she can get a bit impatient in certain occasions – as every child, I suppose. She doesn’t usually hit other children. In fact, she has no behavioural issues, at least till this day! All her tantrums and moments of stubbornness and irritability are of short duration, and seldom get to that point in which any mother would lose her temper. Due to all this, I had thought about Phosphorus as her constitutional remedy, but only based on some on-line readings.

I do understand why is that my posts are not answered, and want to thank you again for your effort. We are trying to get an appointment with a good child’s homeopath, but it will take time. The best one we heard of has her agenda full for months ahead.

One thing that points to Tuberculinum is the fear of dogs, also the active imagination is a pointer.
Does she have a heart shaped face , fine hair and long eyelashes/ If so its a racing certainty.

walkin last decade
Walkin, thank you for your reply.

I don’t think that my daughter’s face is heart shaped. And, as far as I am concerned, all pretty little girls have long eyelashes… hehe. Now, seriously, her hair is indeed thin, brown and with a red tinge.

Can any one tell me if giving her Tuberculinum, even now knowing for sure if it is the right remedy, is in any way contraindicated? And, if it is not, then should I start with 30 cc, or use a lower potency?

Thank you once more…

Silvia

Tuberculinum can be started off with higher potency say 200c. I would suggest that she be given NuX Vom 30 c(Nux Vom is very safe & effective for children) 3 doses first to counter the ill effects of antibiotics which might clear most of her symptoms & along with it give Nat Sulph 6x 2pills*3 times.(As dampness seems to aggravate her condition)

Willway... I am going to give her the Nux Vomica, starting today. However, I am not sure of what you mean with giving her a medicine three times. During three days, in the mornings or afternoons? Or in one day, with a certain interval?

Sorry for insisting, but I really don’t know.

Thanks.

NuX Vom works best at night. by 3 doses, I mean 3 pills of 30 c potency to be given for 3 consequtive nights. Nat Sul can be given simultaneously as it is a bio tissue salt.

Willway, I probably shouldn’t have done what I did... I wasn’t able to find the 30 c potency of Nux in the pharmacy, so I bought what they had – a 5 c bottle. They are sold in small doses, very inexpensive, that is why I decided to buy it (they will already have the 30 c today). And I gave my daughter 3 pills last night. But, earlier in the afternoon, when she came home from a day at the beach, and while I was giving her a bath, I noticed her skin was full of red spots, very small and clustered. I imagined it could be a reaction to the sun, precipitated by the bath. Then, this morning, she was covered with very small pimples (not sure if this is the right word), and I phoned her paediatrician. She said it could be an allergic reaction to the antibiotic, and not so likely to the sun; as I said before, my daughter is on antibiotics, and had to start a new one (a prophylactic formula) on Monday. The doctor said I should halt the new antibiotic for two days, and also told me to give her an anti-allergic. As to this latter, I don’t want to give it, because I was told that when skin eruptions are suppressed, respiratory symptoms could follow. Mariana does not seem disturbed by the eruption, by the way. Well, I gave her the Nux remedy, in 5c potency, again this morning, because I imagined it could help de-intoxicating her body. But I am not sure if it was a mistake to use the 5c bottle, or to give it again in the morning (hadn’t read your post yet), or if what is happening is precisely a reaction to the Nux (a cleaning reaction?), or what to do next...

Please, could you give me a hint on this?

Periopatient, thank you for your suggestion. I might do it.

Hi Silvia
You have written that your daughter spent the day at the beach. Did she swim/ get wet.The long day playing at the beach could have triggered the eruptions.
I still say give Nux Vom 30c for 3 CONSEQUETIVE nights. Never mind that you have given her Nux 5c. Also try to get Nat Sulph 6x.
Keep me posted.

willway last decade
Willway, it’s so nice of you to reply this promptly. She did get wet, all over her body. And I know people who had a reaction to the sun after having antibiotics, too. I will be checking on her condition attentively. You know, when her doctor said to suspend the antibiotic, I was relieved, but must admit that now – on better thinking – I am a bit scared. I don’t know the consequences of taking an antibiotic for 2 days and then stopping it. Well, it is a prophylactic medicine (trimetoprin), doctors told me it is not as strong and active as a regular antibiotic, so maybe it is not so bad.

I am going to buy Nux 30c and Nat Sulph 6c right now. Thanks once more.

Silvia

Silvia it is Nat Sulph 6x not 6c.

Ooops! Thanks for the correction.

In case someone is interested, here are the last developments in my child’s case:

Her skin eruption cleared out completely, in three or four days. We took her to a specialist in paediatric urology, and she said that it was not very likely that this last drug had caused the eruption; she thinks that the three former antibiotics she took, that were much stronger, were probably the guilty ones. In fact, her eruption had begun two days after the last bottle of Ceftin (called Zoref in Portugal, where we live). Therefore, I think the Nux remedy probably helped her getting rid from any toxic vestiges of antibiotic. Other from that, I noticed that she now shows no more signs of photophobia when waking up – I forgot to say this before, but my daughter could not stand to see light for quite a while, in the morning.

As to her recurrent infections, news is also very good. She was finally declared free from any sign of infection, that is, her urine test came out perfectly clean. But, almost better than that, this specialist was great! She said we could put aside all invasive and uncomfortable tests for the moment, and that my daughter should be simply taken care of with common sense! She prescribed a high dosage of vitamin C, to acidify her urine (till now, her urine’s ph was too alkaline (7,5 – 8), and said it should be enough! As soon as ph gets to (around) 6, she believes there will be no more urinary complaints. What a difference from all other doctors we have seen, all paediatricians, but none of them urologists, who kept saying that she her kidneys could be at high risk, that urinary infections at her age are really abnormal and demand strong medical intervention, and that she cold not pass without months (or years) of prophylactic antibiotics.

I am now very relieved, and wanted to thank you all. Willway, thank you very much for the Nux and Nat Sulph indications. Do you think she should go for another remedy (maybe a supposedly “constitutional” one, or the formerly mentioned Tuberculinum), or not?

Well, in fact there is one more thing… is this “alkalinity/acidity” question relevant in homeopathy? Because I am now very interested in understanding why is that Mariana has such alkaline urine, since I’ve read that the average person has a ph of 6.4. What seems to be my daughter’s natural tendency for alkalinity is, after all, putting her in danger for similar infections.

Thank you again!!

And I now have another doubt. Maybe I should open a thread for this question, but for now on I will ask it here. A little girl in my daughter’s kindergarten (same class) caught chickenpox, and her symptoms begun about a week ago. Since my daughter was sick (with the above mentioned urinary infections) for more then a month, and is finally free, I would hate her to get sick again so soon! Plus, she is going to the beach everyday (in the school’s summer program) and loving it, and will be travelling to the country with her grandparents as soon as her holiday break begins, and is so thrilled and pleased with all these activities. So, I was thinking about prevention… and read that Rhus toxicodendron could help preventing the chickenpox infection in people that were exposed to the disease. She is not vaccinated against it, although here, in Portugal, the government has already announced that chickenpox immunization will be mandatory (I don’t intend to do it to her, anyway).

Does anyone have an idea bout this subject in general, and about Rux t. as a preventive remedy, including the adequate dosage and potency? I would very much appreciate…

Thank you

Hi Silvia, I replied to you earlier but somehow the post did not get thru, some error in my computer???
glad that your daughter is now much better. I suggest that you wait for some more time before thinking of Constitutional remedy for her. As for Alkaline in her urine, suggest lot of citrus fruits & vegetables to take care of the problem. Did her tests reveal any renal stones, this can also cause recurrent UTI.Also you mentioned that she had jaundice before, so continue with Nat Sulph , it is a good liver salt. as for chickenpox prophylaxis, 3 remedies are usually recommended by Homeopaths: Pulsatilla, Ant tart, Variolinum. For your daughter I would say go for Puls, as it will take care of the digestion, liver .

willway last decade
Willway! Thank you again for… well… being always there!

Her tests didn’t reveal renal stones. I will continue with Nat Sulph., maybe you could, when possible, tell me for how long should I give it?

I have Pulsatilla in my house, so could start giving it tonight, but I’ve also been reading stuff about chickenpox and children… and found out that some homeopaths believe that this particular infection is very important in children’s development, helping the immune system to mature, and causing a general mental, emotional and physical boost in the affected child. I read testimonies of parents saying that, after healing from the disease, their children had a growth outburst in all fields… So, I am almost willing to forget about prevention. I will probably wait, and then ask for your help if actual treatment is needed!

Thank you, you are very kind.

Hi Silvia Nat sulph 6x is a biochemic tissue salt which can be given as a maintenance dose for long time. But personally I wd suggest that you give it for a month, give a break for 2 weeks , see how she is progressing & maybe start again but reducing the dosage. This way the immune system also gets stronger. re Prophylaxis for chicken pox, it is good that you have decided against it, but these remedies can be thought of in case of infection as they will help the patient to fight the disease in a better way(physically, & emotionally) with no adverse side effects.
take care

Please help,

I am a 28 year married female.4 years ago (after marriage) I got the first UTI, cured by antibiotics. Then the UTI came back every 6 months and then every month. Last time it came back immediately after I complete the antibiotic medicine. Now I have UTI for more then a month, but this time I decided to cure it by homeopathic medicine.

Symptoms: cloudy or milky color of urine and fuel odor that is worse in morning after waking up. Feeling discomfort in bladder but no burning or urge to urine. Started after intercourse. Urine test is showing E.Coli.

My homeopath asked me to take 4 times a day sepia 30 c (one tablet each time) and Cantharis 30 c (two pellets each time). After 2 weeks there is a little improvement in odor during the day and I feel more comfort in bladder, however the milky color and fuel adore is still there after waking up in mornings. Now she told me to replace Cantharis 30c by 200c and to take the same number of pellets per day. Moreover, she told me I can start Medorrhinum (one dose per week).
