6 months with reflux and night wakings
I have a 6 month old baby girl. She does not vomit or burp, but her pediatrician and a homeopath I visited recently tend to think she has reflux. She is a terrible eater. Since her second month she eats very little, never losing weight but dropping twice the weight percentile she was on. Around 2 months ago she started waking at least every hour during the night, and sometimes every 5 to 10 minutes. She has taken way too much medicines for my taste (Zantac, Plasil (don't know whether its the correct name in English), Milpax, a laxative, Zyrtec, and now 2 inhalers). She is now taking Lycopodium and Aethusa Nux Vomica, but I haven't seen any improvements. Any suggestions?patvelar on 2005-08-16
This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Please stop giving your 6 months old daughter the cocktail of drugs copied below that you state you are giving her as they can only do her serious harm.
(Zantac, Plasil (don't know whether its the correct name in English), Milpax, a laxative, Zyrtec, and now 2 inhalers)
I would suggest that you change her formula for a start as it seems to me to be obvious that she is allergic to milk. Soya milk may perhaps help her.
Can you also share with me the reason why you are giving her a laxative and 2 inhalers ? And all this at her tender age of 6 months ?
Have you sought a second opinion from another paeditrician for advice on her problem ?

I'm giving her the laxative because she suffers from severe constipation. Every time she poos she screams and shouts. She just had Laringeotraqueobronqueolitis (I believe that is croup with bronqueolitis), and that's why she was using 2 inhalers. I removed one of them, but the other one, even the homeopath I took her to said I should continue giving it for a while. I have heard several opions, the pediatrician, the neumologist, and finally the homeopath.
I did try like 3 months ago to change her to soy milk for a week but she was very irritable so I returned to her old milk (Similac Advance 1, which is the only one she doesn't seem to dislike as much- but she clearly doesn't love it either).
She is now eating soups with vegetables, meat or chicken, and rice or potatoes. She also eats homemade fruit compotes, and rice, corn and oat cereal.

I believe that Nat Phos 6x (Biochemic salt) can help her and that it should help her hyperacidity and reflux which is causing the problem in her digestion.
However I must caution you that I have not treated a baby and I do not know the pediatric dosage. The dosage for adults is 2 tablets taken after both lunch and dinner.
The advantage in using Nat Phos is that it accelerates the passage of food through the gut and thereby ensures that the stools are soft. This is the standard reaction that can be expected from adults and I presume even from a baby.
All I can state is that the use of Nat Phos 6x cannot harm her and it may be worth your while to get some tablets and see how she reacts to say 1 tablet after a feed.
I would suggest that you limit her food intake as I have

I would suggest that you limit her food intake as I get the impression that you may be overfeeding her in your anxiety to ensure that she increases in her weight. This too can cause distress.

Thanks for your help! I'll definitely try it and let you know.
With regards to your concern to my over feeding her, don't worry! For sure I'm not! We never force her or insist her to eat. For example, average babies her age drink about 8 onz. of milk per feeding. She will have no more than 3 onz. She just won't drink more.
Do you think this will also help with the night wakings? I should say Í'm about to go crazy. I haven't been able to sleep for the past 8 months...the last 1.5 months of my pregnancy I simply did not sleep more than 10 minutes per night. I get very severe rhinitis with pregnancy, and that some how gave me the sensation that I was choking when I went to sleep, so I woke up very anxious and could not sleep any more. I was finally able to fall asleep withuot feeling I was choking like 20 days after she was born with some homepathic drops someone recommended to my sister (her 18 month old baby died in the Tsunami and of course they were all very anxious and couldn't sleep well either). After that, since she wakes up at least every hour I can't sleep either.

Try Silica 6x two times a day for 10-14 days. Give her the medicine directly if she is not completely on breastfeed, else the mother needs to take it.
Report back after a week.

I would prefer that you do not use Silica 6x for a 6 month old baby.
I would advise you to use the Nat Phos 6x and if it does not help I shall indicate another remedy.

I am sorry but I cannot agree with your suggestion to use Silica 30c for a baby. As you perhaps are aware, Silicia is a deep acting remedy and cannot be abused even by adults and certainly not by babies.
Please do not confuse the mother who is desperate for a cure for her 6 month old infant who has already had sufficient drugs some of them dangerous for an infant for many months.

hi, i have a 8 months old boy. i have been having most of the problems you mentioned so I just wanted to share what I learnt over this time.
1- Reflux feels like burning sensation in baby's throat therefore baby drinks more often to soothe this at day or night.then more often they drink more reflux they get. its a vicious circle.
2- If baby can not drink cow's milk formula, soy milk should be tried. cows milk formula has so much iron so its hard on baby's tummy. thats why baby doesnt drink it much. soy milk formula is more gentle. soy formula makes baby constipated more than cows milk formula but no medication necessary. Natural food can help with constipation. I chop up one dry prune every morning and put it in rice cereal. after a few days, baby will never have constipation again.
only necessary medicine is zantac or losec for reflux. probably once a day before going to bed.
i hope this info helps but dont feel alone. we have not slept for the last 8 months either. i know how difficult it is. you should be proud of yourself for being such a dedicated mother who is trying to help her baby.

Hello patvelar,
Did you solve the problem with your child?
I am very sleep deprived, and mine is already 18 month.
THank you

Patvelar made a mistake of giving three remedies together nux vomica, aethusa and lycopodium.
It is better to give the remedy on indications like an irritable baby with ineffectual desire to pass stools will need Nux. Aethusa is restless, anxious and crying. Lycopodium is gassy, starts.
It is better to give Natrum Phos 6x than giving allopathic antacids.
